Lady Gaga

"Can't read my, can't read my, no he can't read my, poker face, she's got to love nobody". Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta better known by her stage name Lady Gaga was born on March 28, 1986 in Yonkers, New York to Italian American parents. Her father, Joseph Germanotta, is an internet entrepreneur, and her mother, Cynthia, works as a telecommunications assistant. She is their eldest child. By the time she was eleven, Gaga was set to join Juilliard School in Manhattan, but instead attended the private Catholic school Convent of the Sacred Heart. Having learned piano by ear at the age of four, Gaga went on to write her first piano ballad at 13 and began performing at open mic nights by the age of 14. At the age of seventeen she gained early admission to the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied music. She honed her writing skills by composing essays and analytical papers focusing on topics such as art, religion and socio-political order. However, she withdrew from New York University. Gaga was originally signed to Def Jam when she was 19 years old; it happened after the record executive L. A. Reid heard her singing down the hallway from his office. However, Gaga states Reid never met with her. "I used to wait outside his office for hours, hoping he'd take meetings with me about my songs, but it never happened." After three months, Reid dropped Gaga from the label. She was spotted a couple of years later by the music executive Vincent Herbert and signed to Interscope in January 2008. Impressed by her ear for melody and knack for spotting a great hook, various acts have hired her as a songwriter, including Akon's Konvict label, as well as Fergie, Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears and New Kids on the Block. Gaga got her stage name when the music producer Rob Fusari compared her vocal style to that of Freddie Mercury, and took the name Gaga from the 1984 Queen single "Radio Ga Ga." It was Fusari who helped her to write some of her early hits, including "Disco Heaven," "Dirty Ice Cream," and "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich. By 2008, Gaga had relocated to Los Angeles, working closely with her record label to finalize her debut album The Fame. "The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous," she explains. "Pop culture is art. It doesn't make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it's a sharable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle. |
Jordin Sparks

"Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air, can't live, can't breathe with no air, that's how I feel when I know you're not there, there's no air, no air". Jordin Brianna Sparks was born in Phoenix, Arizona on December 22, 1989 to Jodi Weidmann-Sparks and former NFL defensive back Phillippi Sparks. After living in New Jersey, Sparks attended Northwest Community Christian School in Phoenix, Arizona through the eighth grade. Sparks attended Sandra Day O'Connor High School until 2006, and then she was homeschooled to better concentrate on her singing. Sparks is an evangelical Christian and attends Calvary Community Church in Phoenix, Arizona. On her "American Idol" biography, she thanks her parents and God for her win. She wears a purity ring that symbolizes her desire to remain a virgin until marriage. She also appeared on the cover of World, an Evangelical Christian news magazine. She won an award for best young artist of the year in Arizona for three years. Before appearing on American Idol, Sparks participated in and won such talent competitions as Sprite Rising Star, Gospel Music Association GMA Academy, and The Proof Is in the Pudding Contest, NBC/PAX America's Most Talented Kids, Colgate Country Showdown and the 2007 Drug Free AZ Superstar Search. In 2006, Sparks was one of six winners who won the Phoenix Torrid search for the "Next Plus Size Model." She was flown to California, where she was used in a number of Torrid ads and promotional pieces. A full-page ad for Torrid featuring Sparks ran in the December 2006 issue of Seventeen magazine. In the summer of 2006, Sparks auditioned twice for American Idol once in Los Angeles, CA (only auditioned for producers) and again in Seattle, WA after winning KSAZ Fox 10's "Arizona Idol." The Seattle audition is the one seen in the January 27, 2007 broadcast of American Idol where she earned a "gold ticket" and the right to appear in the Hollywood Round. American Idol judge Randy Jackson made the offhand prediction that, "Curly hair will win this year. While on the show, Sparks gained a loyal fan base known as "Sparkplugs" (even having their own official fan site). On May 23, 2007, Sparks was crowned the winner of the sixth season of American Idol having never been in the bottom three. She remains the youngest winner in American Idol history. Sparks twice performed on seventh season, once on the Idol Gives Back results show singing her duet with Chris Brown, "No Air" and again with "One Step at a Time" on May 21, 2008, for the finale of American Idol. She also performed on the May 13, 2009 episode of Season 8 of American Idol. |

Mavado

“I’m so special; I’m so special, so special, so special”. David Constantine Brooks, better known as Mavado aka Gully God, was born on November 30, 1981. He was raised in an area known as "Cuba", a micro ghetto within the heart of Kingston, Jamaica's Cassava Piece community. The community was considered dangerous and Mavado was exposed to many different things in his youth. Mavado had two major influences in his life that made him want to pursue a career in music. His grandmother who raised him, brought him to church with her each Sunday, and this helped to ignite his love for music. What kept the flame burning was his second influence in his music; his idol, and current label mate Bounty Killer. Bounty Killer and legendary dancehall manager Griffith began to take Gully God under their wing and showed him the ropes of the music business. Gully God & Matthew Samuels (Assistant Manager) met the Daseca Production Crew in 2004, and recorded his debut single "Real McKoy" over the Anger Management Riddim, which in turn made him a sensation in Jamaican dancehall music. His next single brought him more mainstream success, and outside of Jamaica people began to notice him. In 2006, the single "Weh dem a Do" got major airplay worldwide on radio stations such as New York's WQHT (Hot 97). Gully God continued to pursue his musical interest despite turbulence in his personal life including the murder of his father and numerous run-ins with the authorities. In addition to high demand for shows in USA, Mavado has made appearances on high profile events such as BET's Rip The Runway in February 2009. Jamal "Gravy" Woolard, star of Notorious movie, flew back with Mavado to Jamaica in February 2009 to record some tracks after meeting him in New York after confessing that he was a big fan of Mavado and was impressed with his music. “I’m so special” Mavado’s current single that burst onto the sounds waves in 2008/9 and continues to be a hit. |
Maino

“You see me, Hi Hater”. Jermaine Coleman also known as Maino is the fast rise to fame rapper that brought us the song we love to use to address all of our haters. Maino is originally from Brooklyn, New York. Upon his release from prison in 2003, Maino immediately founded Hustle Hard Entertainment. Later that year, he had a chance meeting with DJ Kay Slay and was able to secure his first radio appearance. After several mixtape releases and key guest features, he was awarded a recording contract by Universal Records. Maino split with the label in 2007, feeling that they weren't promoting him enough. He later signed with himself and his Hustle Hard imprint to Atlantic Records. His first single from his debut album is "Hi Hater". Maino released the official remix to the song, featuring T.I., Swizz Beatz, Plies, Jadakiss, and Fabolous. The next single was "All the Above", featuring T-Pain. It debuted and peaked at #39 on the Billboard 100, marking this the first single to chart at that chart. The single has been certified gold by the RIAA for digital sales in excess of 500 000. Maino continually encourages us through his music by either encouraging us to embrace and acknowledge the fact that we have haters, or whether it be encouraging us to take the chance and overcome all the above. Whatever it may be Maino is the type of artist that uses his past to speak to his audience and encourage them to seek an even greater future. |
David Cook

David Roland Cook was born on December 20, 1982 in Houston, Texas, raised in Blue Springs, Missouri, and currently lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Cook's interest in music began at a young age. He began singing in second grade, when his elementary school music teacher gave him a part in a school Christmas performance. He proceeded to perform in virtually every Christmas and PTA program. He received his first guitar, a Fender Stratocaster, at the age of 13. He also participated in choir and drama programs in middle school and high school. At Blue Springs South High School, he performed in musicals, including The Music Man, West Side Story, and Singin' in the Rain. In addition to this, he was an active member in the Blue Springs South High School National Forensics League (or NFL), where he qualified for the national tournament twice for duo interpretation, an event that relies on performance and interpretation of a literary work. Cook won the seventh season of American Idol on May 21, 2008, receiving 56 percent of the votes, with 12 million votes over David Archuleta, the runner-up. Cook then sang "The Time of My Life", the winning song of the 2008 American Idol Songwriter's Competition. In the final tally, Archuleta received 44 percent of the votes. For the Billboard chart week ending May 25, 2008, a week following Cook's American Idol victory, Cook broke several Billboard chart records. Most notable was his record shattering feat of having eleven songs debut on the Hot 100 that week, beating the previous record set by Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) in 2006 when she had six songs debut on the chart. Cook's first single, "The Time of My Life" led the pack, debuting at #3 on the Hot 100. |
