Pastor Phil Dooley, who recently moved to South Africa with his family to plant Hillsong Cape Town, has written to us about his experiences during the recent riots that left 10,000 people displaced in Cape Town alone. i
"Last night, May 24, a few of us went down to Ocean View Police Station to see how we could assist with the refugee situation brought on by the xenophobic attacks in townships.
We were confronted with some pretty serious needs that a small group of willing volunteers from the local community were attempting to deal with. Refugees were being transported on the back of trucks with only the clothes on their back and a few personal belongings.
The most urgent need was for blankets...they needed at least 200. It was 9.30pm and no one had any suggestions on how to get these...I went through my phone address book, which isn't too long as I haven't been here more than 6 weeks and called those I thought might be able to help. Ron Martin from Joyce Meyer Ministries is the man! He had 150 blankets and much non-perishable food at their offices, so we headed down there and loaded up our car. Blair and Mike joined us with bottles of water, warm clothes and other necessary supplies...
We headed back to Ocean View police station sorted out our documents so we could head into the camp. Discussed what was going on with volunteer leaders, like Rev. John Thomas from Fish Hoek Baptist Church (this guy was in the thick of the action!).
We jumped in the cars and headed out to "Soetwater" where their refugee camp is. We drove through the dark and until we reached the entrance...2 big gates, 3 metres high, plus barricades and lots of police officers with guns greeted us without smiles...Brad who had made us aware of the situation got out and explained to them what we were doing and showed our stamped papers. The gates swung open and we drove in.
It was now after 11pm...it took a few minutes to get to the camp, and when we got there the first thing I had to do was slow down to avoid running over people huddled together sleeping on the side of the road under blankets...there were tents set up and they were packed full of refugees all trying to get some sleep. Others were outside with blank expressions on their faces, working out what to do next with life.
We unloaded the blankets, clothes, food, and hygiene supplies. The beautiful volunteers mainly women were overjoyed with what we provided, even though it didn't seen like much considering the need...we stayed for a while chatted to some of the guys, found out what was needed urgently and then left to get some sleep...and spread the word that more help is needed!
Today, Sunday May 25, another 400 (at least) refugees are said to be arriving. Needs are: blankets, baby bottles, sterilising equipment, food, clothes, toilet paper, tarps to cover the ground for sleeping, plus volunteers to help with distributing supplies and providing food. I know a number of people have been stirring into action, let's keep doing what we can to help make a difference in this situation."

QUICK FACTS:
Attacks began on May 11, in Alexandra, north of Johannesburgii with the murder of two immigrants.iii Now, as gangs have been beating, raping, killing and burning foreign nationalsiv more than 50 people have diedv and 35,000 have fledvi to refugee centers across South Africa.vii
These 35,000 - like most displaced people - are in desperate need of food, shelter and sanitary facilities.viii Sadly, large percentages of those displaced are Zimbabweans who initially moved to SA to escape persecution.ix
There also are concerns for the ongoing safety of victims as many are undocumented foreign nationals fearing risk of deportation if they participate in the justice process.x
