I happened upon this article and I thought what great tips for the fashion-challenged man who has to appear in public for a speaking engagement or appear a television news segment.
... Remember, we only get one chance to make a good first impression
Men's Fashion - 6 Important Men's Fashion Rules to Live By From Daniel Billett, Your Guide to Men's Fashion / Grooming.
Every man has asked themselves about matching their socks with their trousers and other assorted questions at some point in their lives. Here I have listed six important men's fashion rules to live by which should at least clear up some confusion about a few things. - Always match your belt with your shoes. This is a good rule to follow and it keeps things simple. It's best to stay with traditional colors such a black, dark brown or a rich tan. Other colors will be difficult to match, and generally speaking, should be avoided. If you wear sneakers every day that probably means you are wearing jeans in which case I suggest trying a belt made of fabric or something equally as casual, but please avoid dress belts with jeans and sneakers. If you wear suspenders, I am compelled to ask you why, but I digress. Just don't wear a belt and suspenders together, it's one or the other.
- Matching Ties and Shirts. For while the solid-colored shirt with a tie of the same (or slightly-off) color was seen everywhere. This is now a somewhat dated look. Try mixing things up a little and experiment with colors. Ties are great way to express yourself, but keeping it tasteful is your best bet. You can't go wrong with diagonal stripes, modern polka-dots, plaids and subtle patterns. Just make sure your tie compliments your shirt, suit, sweater or what ever you will be wearing it with. Novelty ties are best avoided since the novelty is short lived.
Note: Ties should be tied in whatever style most strikes your fancy. You should know that there are many different ways to knot your tie, and different knots say different things. I prefer the Windsor or the four-in-hand, but I do suggest that you explore a little just for kicks. As for clip on ties--just say no. - Pleats vs. Flat-Front. Why so many men have avoided flat-front trousers has always been a mystery to me. Flat-front trousers look better than pleated pants most of the time. Pleats make you look less slim. I have heard guys wear pleats because it's more comfortable or because flat-fronts are more for athletic bodies. Truth is most men can wear a flat-front trouser. If you want more room then buy them a little big and have them brought in at the waist. This can be done at the store where you buy your clothes or by an independent tailor. And lastly, flat-font trousers are much more fashionable.
- Socks. The more official rule on socks is that they should match the color of your pants, though preferably not the exact same shade unless, of course, you are wearing black in which case it's okay. However, I personally like to wear socks with patterns, such as stripes in various colors. But I do try to match my socks with my pants and shoes. To quote Glenn O'Brien from GQ magazine, ". . .you will ultimately realize that beyond the valley of rules rises the mountain of aesthetics, the peak of which (if there is one) is always shrouded in beautiful clouds of various hues, many of them resembling certain of my more unusually hued socks."
Note: Although it should be obvious, white socks should be reserved for the gym. - Watches are the single most important accessory a man can own. I really suggest investing in one good watch that suits your lifestyle and taste. However, if you are someone who likes to own more than one watch, wear the appropriate timepiece for your outfit: black band with black shoes and belt; brown band with brown shoes and belt; and silver band for either. See my Men's Watch Guide for more in depth advice.
- Eyeglasses are one of the few ways you can really express yourself. I have worn glasses for many years and I love having a few pair in different styles. They don't have to just serve a function, but can enhance your overall look. Do your best to find a pair of glasses that not only compliments the shape of your face, but also expresses your personality. Ask people who wear glasses for a place where you can get good advice about what shape and style looks best for your face shape and features.

That's right booksellers we are entering into the holiday season -
I'm sure you've already seen the store displays set up for Halloween. Next it will be Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, Boxing Day and New Year's Day!
You can take advantage of the holiday excitement and do a little promotion for yourself too!
Start by sending out mailers to remind your customers that books make great Christmas Stocking Stuffers!
HALLOWEEN- Along with candy treats include promotional bookmarks, post cards, stickers in every Halloween "trick or treat" bag too! Dress your children up as characters from your book - or even better help out a parent who may not be able to afford a halloween costume and dress their children up as YOUR book for Halloween! You can even be a good neighbor and chaperone the kiddies for the evening.
THANKSGIVING/BLACK FRIDAY - Remember when shoppers lined up really early outside Toys R US, Best Buy and other retailers to buy must-have Christmas gifts like such as Tickle Me Elmo X? As a bookseller you should be out there too but instead, sel your publications to the captive audience..Be creative - stage an inpromptu book reading, book signing or offer specially priced books already gift wrapped...If you want to get really creative ask about 30 folks to pose for a picture holding your book and use as a promotional tool.
CHRISTMAS EVE - Individually gift wrap your book - go to the mall, outlets and strip malls and sell to those last minute gift shoppers. Set up a hot chocolate kiosk and sell good will, cheer and books.
Finally, check with your local strip mall leasing agent to find out if you can lease empty store space for two months. It's a win-win, the strip mall will appear as if there's full occupancy and you will be in a high traffic area.
To defray the cost of the sublet partner up with other booksellers in your area. Set up a like flea market during the holiday shopping months...
If you are really ambitious hire a photographer and a Santa claus - You will drive traffic to the spot and offer an alternative to the long Santa Claus line at the mall.
HAPPY BOOKSELLING!!! ~Mel Hopkins, The LeadStory

How to write a tip sheet By Sandra Beckwith A tip sheet is a news release that offers advice or tips in a bulleted or numbered format. It's one of the hardest working and most useful tactics available for generating publicity. Use a tip sheet to generate short column notes in a newspaper or magazine or to interest a reporter, editor or producer in a feature article or talk show interview on the tip sheet topic. Here's how to create an effective tip sheet: - Use a press release format. The biggest difference between a tip sheet and a traditional press release is that the body of the tip sheet will include your tips or advice in a numbered or bulleted format.
- Start with a headline that mimics those on magazine covers – "5 ways to lose weight before June" or "Top 7 mistakes shoppers make." Here's an example from a tip sheet promoting a women's health and nutrition book to newspaper living sections:
Expert offers 10 nutrition tips for New Year's resolutions - Write your first paragraph so it explains why the tips are necessary. The first paragraph and introductory text for the nutrition tip sheet was:
As any health club owner knows, "taking better care of myself" tops New Year's resolution lists each year. Yet, many people – particularly women – don't know exactly what it means to take better care of themselves. - Present a quotation in the second paragraph. This should provide more detail about why the tip sheet is necessary and establish the subject's credentials. Here's the second paragraph in the New Year's resolution tip sheet:
"Traditionally, women have been caretakers of others in their lives – friends, family, neighbors, coworkers," explains Susan Calvert Finn, PhD, RD, FADA, the architect of the American Dietetic Association's Nutrition & Healthy Campaign for Women. "More and more busy women are realizing, however, that before they can adequately care for others, they must first care for themselves. It is clear that they must take charge of their own health. Nobody is going to do it for them." - Set up your tips with a sentence – "Here are Smith's tips for saving money at the supermarket" – or a short paragraph, as we have here:
Dr. Finn's new book, The American Dietetic Association Guide to Women's Nutrition for Healthy Living, provides women of all ages with nutrition information they can use immediately to eat right, maintain their health and prevent disease. Here are her top 10 suggestions from the book for women who need a healthier lifestyle this year: - Then list your tips with bullets or numbers. When tips are listed this way, rather than in traditional paragraphs, editors can quickly scan them to see if they would be useful to readers – or not. Make sure you write your tips in an active voice with strong verbs. And make sure they provide advice, not reasons to do something or product features. Here are a few of the tips in Finn's release so you can get a sense of how this works:
• Make an appointment with a registered dietitian (RD) for a nutritional checkup. Call the American Dietetic Association at 800-366-1655 to locate an RD near you. • Switch your thinking from "ideal" weight to "healthy" weight. Remember, you are unique. Your healthy weight may differ from your neighbor's – even if she is your height and age – because of other variables such as genetics, fitness level and overall health. • Look for "aerobic opportunities" every day. Park farther out in the lot at the mall. Take a brief walk at lunch or dinner. Think of the stairs as your friend. - Finally, add the concluding boilerplate paragraph that you put on most press releases. Here's the paragraph for the nutrition book:
The American Dietetic Association Guide to Women's Nutrition for Healthy Living, published by Perigee Books, is available in bookstores nationwide for $14. Book proceeds benefit nutrition research by the ADA, a national organization of 70,000 nutrition professionals, 98 percent of whom are women. Look for ways to include tip sheets in your publicity plan; you'll soon see how easily they generate results. An innovative promotional tool for selling especially for inspirational and educational books such as "Gumbo for the Soul Anthology" would be a
Library/ Non Profit Organization Drop Ship Program.
A book lover, corporate sponsor and/or philanthropist can order your book(s) and donate it to a public library (especially a public library with limited funds), a neighborhood youth center or even your church library ...

Whenever anyone asks me what I do, the first thing I have to determine is what does this person want from me? Of course, before I let anyone ask me that question, I find out as much as I can about them...I focus on other people. As a salesperson, you learn its NOT about you and what you have for sale... A saleperson knows that he or she is business to make a client's/customer's life Easier Enjoyable, Affordable, Fill in the blank
You are selling emotional benefits...your product or service will make your client/customer smarter, popular, appealing, safer and the best one richer...So with that in mind, let's treat this blog as a cyber networking social - I picked you all to network with because I already know you are THE LITERATI!!! You either/or/and: Sell books, Review books , Promote books, Write books, Love books Could write a book, Are writing a book maybe you even Collect books but there is one thing, other people don't know you here and we should all know each other.. So instead of promoting your book, PLEASE DON'T PROMOTE YOUR BOOK, Tell us WHAT you do, HOW what you do will BENEFIT me and my myspace friends - SELL THE SIZZLE... If you are a published author tell me how I will benefit from reading your book.. Ex: When you read Sleeping With a D-Man you will be transported to a time much like the 21st century - EXCEPT you will see and experience all the magic that is hidden in plain sight.
If you are a literary consulting business or service; if you are a publisher, share with us the benefit of doing business with you... I'll go first. Hi, My name is Mel Hopkins.
I help writers, authors and publishers get national, regional and local exposure while building a buzz about their publications using every media outlet available. YOUR TURN...
