this is year two of the fabulously unofficial kentucky hill music festival. last year's fest (then called "the concert for rosie") was an enormous success and featured the debut of the priddle concern and a blistering closing set by the legendary don vail (yes i play in don vail, so i can say whatever i want about them). this year's version features numerous acts, mostly from dunnville and hamilton, with the priddle concern and don vail again topping the bill. i'm happy to say efforts to make this year's KHMF an official, above-board event have failed, and it remains a "party" with bands and no admission--just a "donation" of ten dollars. food and drinks will be for sale.

this is an awesome chance to go to a small scale and extremely non-corporate outdoor festival in a beautiful setting. camping is encouraged. swimming is nearby. this remains the gig i look forward too all year, and is worth the "donation" if only for the ridiculously eclectic set of underrehearsed covers that will be don vail's encore. you know when people sarcastically ask for skynrd? well... enough said.

i'll be around there all day, please say hi

i have been done in by semantics and the power of suggestion. have you ever had an incorrect notion enter your head and then been surprised by how stubbornly it tried to hold on in the face of the contradictory truth?

phil klygo sent me a note on my facebook wall last saturday. asking me to play on his weewerk show, july 26th. before mentioning the date he asked if i " might be avail/interested in capping this sat. nite." he then could have said capping this "bill" , or capping this "show", but he said THIS SAT. NITE.

reading this, i thought to myself, he's talking about "this saturday night". let's see, i have a don vail show this thursday the 26, so this saturday night must be the 28th. he's had a cancellation and needs a band short notice.

the very next line of the email said "SAT july 26th = (weewerk) presents @ the silver dollar"

here's where the cruel hand of semantics enters the scene. when i read THIS SAT. NITE i decided then and there that the show was sat. june 28th. so when i saw the next line, it wasn't too hard to see june instead of july (first two letters are the same) and 28 instead of 26 (bottom of 6 and 8 identical on my facefook font). remember, i wasn't reading to find out the date of the show (i had already falsely worked out the date when i read "THIS SAT. NITE") iwas reading this line to CONFIRM that the show was june 28.

it is interesting to note (interesting to me, the idiot who posted an incorrect date on his myspace page) that june and july are the two months closest to each other in spelling. that is to say, if this had happened a month later, it's doubtful that after assuming the date was in july i would not have noticed that it said august. similarly, if the correct date was, say the 19th, i probably wouldn't have looked at that number and thought, yes, that is the number 28.

i certainly can't blame phil for this. he never intended to be misleading, and ACTUALLY HAD THE CORRECT DATE ON THE EMAIL, which i conveniently misread.

all this being a long-winded apology for anyone inconvenienced by my unforgivable posting of an incorrect show date. the priddle concern will close the show, SAT. JULY 26th.
if you're there and you came tonight, come talk to me and i'll try and make it up to you.

once more to recap:

I AM AN IDIOT

THERE IS NO PRIDDLE CONCERN SHOW SAT. JUNE 28

THERE IS A PRIDDLE CONCERN SHOW SAT. JULY 26

it's at the silver dollar, it's a (weewerk) presents show, also featuring charlotte cornfield, h-burns and krista hartman.

i would love to see you there.

so today is the release of my record. it's been a long time coming. some of the songs were written as early as 1996, but most of them in 2003 or 2004. recording them was done by early 2006. i suppose in a lot of ways this is the record i've been wanting to make my whole life. i guess that's putting a lot of pressure on these poor songs, but i think they just may be up to the task.

tonight i'll play most of them at the Horseshoe Tavern on 368 Queen St. W with mitch, scott and dave. we hit the stage at 10pm, it's a free show.

on friday i'll play a couple of songs on The Edge live from Sound Academy, sometime around seven.

on saturday i'll play a handful of songs at Soundscapes, located at 572 College St. in Toronto, probably my favourite record store in Toronto. that starts at five.

in the meantime, if inclined you can buy my latest album from any of these fine online establishments:

our "Official" store iTunes MapleMusic Zunior GalleryAC

while you're at it, might as well check out our shiny new website - www.thepriddleconcern.com

the priddle concern will play elvis monday april 21 underground at the drake hotel. also on the bill the always amazing don vail (full disclosure, i play in don vail, 75% of don vail play in my band).

i’ve known william new since he was doing elvis mondays at the 1150 club which was, as it turns out, is the very same venue (underground at the drake hotel). this was the early 90’s and my old band was trying to get an elvis monday gig, so we were checking it out. i was very intimidated. it was before dave bookman and brendan canning from hhead started championing our band. i couldn’t have felt less cool. there was a skinny baby-face kid tending bar. he looked more scared than me, tentative and awkward and avoiding eye contact. i liked him immediately. after twenty minutes or so he walked on the stage and started singing in a huge nick cave meets jim morrison voice. we left that night with a vague promise from derek from grasshopper to "hook us up" with a gig (never happened--everyone wanted a gig with grasshopper back then).

we later played an elvis monday at the el mocambo. we covered "albuquerque" by neil young and after the show william told me we butchered it. some weeks later he apologized to me for the remark, but i told him it didn’t bother me. it’s true, sometimes being in a band--and this was especially true for us then in our somewhat critics darling phase--all you get is people telling you how great you sound. you know they’re not always telling the truth so you appreciate it when someone speaks their mind.

so come check it out april 21. and please stay for the always spellbinding don vail.
