I just got my 4-track back from the repair shop. What's this mean for Ham Steak? What does it mean for George Hakkila? Most importantly, what does it mean for you? The answer to all three is, "Probably not much." However, I have a lot of lost ground to cover.
For the first time ever I'm sitting on songs that I've only played live. Also, my George Hakkila page now has more views than this one. I'm in competition with myself. It's like the old Pearl Drops commercial with all that innuendo when the model exclaims, "It's a great feeling!" Yeah, get ready to have your teeth cleaned.
I'm also ready to start playing out again. Not sure anybody wants me to, but that never stopped me before. The Fender Twin is almost back together after a lengthy illness and an operation by Dave. The MXR II and Morley Wah are at the ready. Meanwhile I'm plugged into a battery powered Epiphone practice amp with a 4" speaker so I can play along with the latest Silver Jews. Not the rhythm, mind you, just noodling solos that give me all kinds of Glen Campbell bravado.
As always, feel free to drop by for a beer and a cigar out on the porch.

Ola, senors and senoritas! Happy Nueve de Mayo! I never knew the Spanish had such an affinity for mayonnaise. The Belgians, sure. But the Spanish? I'm celebrating by roasting some mayonnaise encrusted duck with a pine needle confit. Don't be fooled. It's a thin crust of mayo, just enough to seal in all the fatty duck goodness. I also fold in some dry mustard and white pepper. The pine needles come right off the neighbor's tree. White pine. You don't want the red pine or (gag) the scrub pine. They have a propensity to give off too much "ooze" (Although either one is marvelous as an aromatic when roasting bluefish.).
In other news: The George Hakkila page is loaded with a bunch of photos with more coming soon. You can easily click over there since I happen to have George Hakkila in my "Top Friends". I'm also trying to get some new songs on there now that the album is completed. I write about it here because there still seems to be some confusion about Ham Steak being George Hakkila. Perhaps there always will be. Whut-evah! Tell it to the Ham 'cause the George ain't listenin'.
Friday Night Smackdown at my place, with or without you. Bring pizza or Chinese or beer. I'll be the guy watching wrestling on his porch.

Yes, tonight I played my last gig billed as Ham Steak. I was paid with Anchor Steam Beer. The event was the Ceramics BFA show opening at the Hartford Art School. That's the degree conferred on me two years ago. The kids who showed tonight were the last of the ceramics majors that I attended classes with. They're a great bunch of people. And, I must say, the work they showed was really quite good. From sculptural to functional they represented a wide variety of well thought out and well executed pieces.
I've been away from the program now for almost a year. Funny, it feels like a million years. But not tonight. They swiped a stage from the figure drawing studios and set up tinsel, a fog machine, sparkley backdrops, musical appliques, blue holiday lights, and a furry red overhead light for me. It was so sweet.
I had a blast playing for everybody. It's always cool to have a crowd that whistles and sings along. I couldn't imagine a better way to end the Ham Steak era than what happened tonight. Thanks to all of you who came out and special thanks and hugs to the class of '07, "Reclaim to Fame". I'm proud to have been a part of your opening.

I was just checking my plays over on my profile and right this very fucking second "Jesus Loves Cheeses" has been played 666 times. And here it is, the day before Passover and exactly a week before Easter. Devilled egg, anybody?

The rumors are true. There is now a George Hakkila MySpace page. It's been way past due. This thingy will stay here for a while. I don't know what direction Ham Steak will take. The transmission indicator says, "Park" but my foglights still work.
All live shows after next week will be as George Hakkila. Flyers can refer to me as "formerly Ham Steak" or "formerly of Stringbean" or "formerly of King Crimson" or "formerly of Steely Ham". I don't really care what you call me as long as you call me.
Much love, pizza, and beer, Mr. Steak

To welcome the new season and rehash one of my pagan favorites I've loaded my North American hit, Ode to the Vernal Equinox onto my music profile page. You can even download it! Yes, the lo-lo-fi blue-bluegrass chimey ditty that's been covered by Leon Redbone, Leon Spinx, Leon Huff, and Leanne Rimes is available again in its original mix! It is best enjoyed slightly chilled and decanted in a manner that promotes a frothy head. Have a nice Spring.
