Hey guys,

Andy here.  I’m running the Boston Marathon in April for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  My mom is a 9-year breast cancer survivor and I’m running the race in her honor.

We’re putting on a big benefit show on Friday, March 27th at Oliver’s at the Cask & Flagon in Boston.  It’s going to be an amazing night of music, drinks, and hanging out with friends.

We’ve got a growing list of prizes we’ll be giving away throughout the night, including a 2009 red Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. You can read all about the event here:

Get your tickets now and help us stop cancer!

Northeast Performer - January 2009
The Vital Might has created a quality progressive- alternative rock album with their release Red Planet. The album has all the characteristic rock elements, including strong electric guitar providing a loud foundation to their sound, but the band’s inventiveness within their genre proves to make their album and their sound more multifaceted than their peers’. The band takes cues from Radiohead to stray, albeit not that far, from previously developed rock standards. They deconstruct the verse-chorus-verse- chorus-bridge pattern and have their vocal parts border on sporadic. The band also has the ability to create interesting guitar compositions that set them apart from bands with a similar sound, such as A Perfect Circle.

Their variety also sets them apart from the alternative prog rock scene. The Vital Might have managed to add enough dimensionality to their album that it’s hard to expect what will happen as the album progresses; the opening track “Phantom Spaceman,” for example, tells a story of fighting a spaceman to get to a captured woman. Following are two unexpected instrumental tracks, and, toward the end of the album, the lead singer begins to sing an octave higher.

“Superstitious Wish” is a perfect example of the band’s ability to take inspiration from various sounds within their genre. They draw from Red Hot Chili Peppers in their fast-paced drums and quick tempo changes and then Evanescence by recruiting an Amy Lee-sounding singer to do backing vocals. The Vital Might’s Red Planet takes alternative progressive rock one step further than their peers’ attempts by making their album a must-listen for those who appreciate intense and loud instrumentation. -Kelley Allenspach

THE VITAL MIGHT
Magma Music
Red Planet
10-song CD

The urge to create a concept album seems to come from one of two impulses: to impress the bejabers out of the hoi polloi, or as a desperation move. Well, color me impressed. The title track, "Phantom Spaceman," sets the theme and gives us a taste of that old Genesis/King Crimson progginess, and "The Truth" is a remarkably catchy and appealing, if somewhat lyrically simplistic followup. But "City" knocks it out of the park: it's lyrically superb and emotionally evincing. The turbulent and reverberant "Trouble" seems strategically placed to carry the story along, and the melancholy instrumental "Chime" is deftly positioned to slow it down. "Saturday," with its overtones of U2-style grandeur, brings us back to the narrative. The echoic "Seasons" provides another interlude, and then comes the magnificent slow-to-ecstatic centerpiece "5 O'Clock." The Metallaesque impetus of "Superstitious Wish" provides a climax of sorts, and the final track provides a somewhat ambiguous denouement. I do not completely buy into the premise of their high concept "rescue the fair maiden from Mobsters on Mars" premise, but one doesn't have to. The music carries the theme along far more effectively than the backstory. And each individual song can be appreciated on its own terms and outside of any larger context. I'm not sure whether this is a deathless classic, but it's well and carefully planned, and I strongly suspect it might well be. Bravo. (Francis DiMenno)

On the day of our CD release party, Bill O'Neill featured "Red Planet":

"Red Planet," the Vital Might (Magma Music) ***

The band's Web site says some fans have compared it to Rush, others to System of a Down. Seems about right. What really sets Vital Might (a Boston trio that includes Cape native Andy Milk on guitar and vocals) apart is its lyrical creativity. The band's press release describes "Red Planet" as the tale of a man who tries to rescue his lover after she's kidnapped by Mafia thugs and held at the home of a mob boss — on Mars. Now that's entertainment.

CLICK HERE for LOTS more pictures from the CD Release Party

Wow, there's so much to say about the other night.  We had our CD release party for Red Planet at the Middle East Upstairs on Saturday, October 4th.  I got there early with Cracker, Jen, and Steph to make some alterations to the Middle East to make it a bit more festive (i.e.  black & red balloons).  "I want them to look like little balloon planets!"

We got everything all setup and soundchecked and we all went our separate ways to chill before the craziness.  After hanging at my place for a bit, Jorge and I headed back to the venue to help get things started.  Jorge acted as our MC throughout the night and entertained the crowd between sets with subtle jokes and jokes he didn't even mean ("These guys are from Austin!"  "No, that's ALLSTON!")

A Hero Next Door got things started with tight harmonies, thrashing beats, and a captivating and sometimes hilarious stage presence.  They had a great crowd up front getting things warmed up for everyone else.  Build a Machine took the stage next and played another scintillating set with awe inspiring guitar tones and grooves that got the growing crowd doing a jig here and there.  As they moved into Zeppelin jams and reverb-soaked guitar solos, you could tell the night was getting going.  Cassavettes had the crowd surging with their rootsy rock that got in your face and your pants.  Well, not my pants particularly, but I was definitely bouncing around from their set's energy and anticipation of ours.

As I watched all these bands, I thought to myself, "Wow, these guys are all awesome guitar players!  I better really go the extra mile tonight!"  Of course the rhythm sections and singers were great too, but man, was the bar set high on the axe!

We took the stage just before midnight and got things going with "Phantom Spaceman".  We decided to treat everyone to a front-to-back playing of the Red Planet songs.  Several of these songs we hadn't played live yet, so it felt amazing to give birth to them in front of such a large and responsive crowd.  Doug Arsham (of Peanut Earth fame) jumped on stage and shook a tambourine and sang some harmonies on "The Truth".  He later helped us get everyone going on "Superstitious Wish".  As we approached the final jam of that song, Doug, Jonny P (from
White), and Evan had a group of people on stage banging sticks and cowbells, and the front row of people were smashing tambourines and sticks together.  We have some pictures but it's hard to do it justice.  Doug also sang and rocked the shaker with us during "Saturday", which seems to be a fan favorite, even though it was our first time playing it out!

After we finished up Red Planet, we busted into "Bird of Black Fire", one that everyone seemed to know.  We beckoned for anyone who wanted to sing to jump on stage and sing with us.  It didn't take much prodding as at least 10 people were up there in no time.  As always, we finished things off with "Measure" and a lot of hopping and jumping and sweating.

At the end of our set, Jorge came back up and thanked all the bands and had some good chants going.   We were spent but managed to play one more song before calling it a night.

I want to thank all the bands who played exciting sets and brought out all their fans to be part of a very successful night.  We made a lot of new friends and everyone was all smiles throughout the night.  Excellent job guys.

I also want to thank all of our friends and family who came from miles away and from just down the street to be there for us.  Thank you to Jen, Steph, Kate, Bobbie, and Julie for helping sell merch and decorate the place all nice-like.

If you didn't grab a copy of the album at the show or you weren't there, you can get it here:

Cheers,
Andy (Rick and Cracker too!)
