Last year The Waifs were part of the huge Union Of Soul WA tour with the John Butler Trio, this year they return to headline their own series of concerts over the summer. In WA they will be joined by America’s Independent sweetheart, Ani Di Franco and new WA act Mama Kin and for the rest of the country, old friend and fellow independent road warrior, Jez Mead.

The Waifs have been one of West Australia's most loved and appreciated bands over their 20 year history. Building their fan base the hard way, playing every corner of the country, earning respect of peers and fans alike for their tenacity and drive to do things their own way.

From the back streets of sleepy towns in WA, to an internationally loved, multiple ARIA Award winning multiple platinum selling act, (their latest release Sun Dirt Water now about to go platinum), The Waifs have paved the way for Australian independent artists to be able to forge successful careers outside of the major label rules.

Since they last took to the stage on home soil, The Waifs have been busy touring through Europe and America to support the release of Sun Dirt Water.

This summer, the band will be touring for their fans…. literally! They will be placing the decision of the show set lists into the hands of the fans. Rarities, classics, the hits, and a few brand new ones! It will be up to the fans to decide. The Waifs started their career by touring WA from town to town in the back of a Toyota Hiace van, booking their own shows, promoting their own shows and releasing their own CDs. Each night they would package their CDs in post packs and send them out to record stores and fans alike. The only person who they could look to for inspiration for forming the true independent model in Australia was the inimitable Ani DiFranco.

Ani bucked the major label system in the early-‘90s, opting to release her music on her own terms and formed her own label Righteous Babe Records. She’s been called “fiercely independent” (Rolling Stone), “inspirational” (All Music Guide), “the ultimate do-it-yourself songwriter” (The New York Times).

Righteous Babe Records has released over 20 studio Ani albums.

On her new album, Red Letter Year, she takes more advantage of this freedom than ever before. Conceived, sculpted and refined over the course of two years – a lifetime compared to a typical Ani recording session – the album is an impeccably crafted, multi-layered sonic achievement.

The sultry sounds of Fremantle locals Mama Kin will be opening the shows.

After a two year break, international touring artists The Waifs returned to the local spotlight for an amazing year back behind the mics.

Their current record Sun Dirt Water rocketed into the ARIA charts at 2 week of release and every show they played sold out, reigniting the fires that burn within Aussies for their favourite folk rockers.

It has been an amazing return to the local stage, which started with a national sold out arena tour supporting Keith Urban and flowing through to a sold out national tour of their own, magazine covers, rave reviews and talked about appearances on Enough Rope with Andrew Denton (ABC) and another hit ABC series, The Chaser.

Vikki Simpson also clocked up another song writing gong, taking out the WAM Award for Song Of The Year, for her hit single Sun Dirt Water.

After performances at The Woodford Folk Festival, The Falls Festival's in TAS and VIC and the Southbound Festival in WA, the band will join label mate John Butler on a national tour in January, with special guests Clare Bowditch and The Feeding Set, for a number of spectacular outdoor events in the Union Of Souls Tour.

A series of intimate up close, bare bones concert versions of the Union Of Soul will be announced for Sydney , Melbourne and Brisbane in the early new year.

This will be the last chance for fans to see the band before they return to the USA in March 2008 to tour and release Sun Dirt Water.

Having both grown as strong independent acts that are now making waves around the world, The John Butler Trio and The Waifs are undoubtedly two of Australia's most prolific acts and they are thrilled to announce a special series of shows under the banner of 'The Union of Soul '.

These unique shows will take place in February next year. In Ballarat, the show will take place on Saturday February 2 in the beautiful surrounds of the lake. To join in for these special performances The John Butler Trio and The Waifs welcome Clare Bowditch and The Feeding Set, who's new album 'The Moon Looked On' has recently been released with critical acclaim. Opening proceedings will be young Ballarat locals Epicure, who's new single 'Cobra Kisses' is bouncing off airwaves at the moment and Brother B will provide a DJ set in between bands.

The Waifs are riding high with their new album SunDirtWater debuting at No.2 on the Aria charts and remaining in the top 20 for the last 8 weeks. The Waifs will be featured in one of the new episodes of Chaser War On Everything.They have recently completed a sell out tour of the nation, securing rave reviews for their concert performances.

It's been an extraordinary ride for the John Butler Trio this year with their new album 'Grand National; debuting at No. 1 on the ARIA charts in March. Since then the album has delivered three radio hit singles and gone on to be accredited for double platinum sales in Australia whilst the band makes incredible in roads into all major international territories. The album is also nominated for the prestigious J Award (Triple J's album of the year) which will be announced by Triple J later this year.
In April, the John Butler Trio recorded a very special performance at Melbourne's Federation Square which featured all the musicians who helped make the 'Grand National' album, we are pleased to inform fans this is now available on DVD through ABC Music.
