Watchu Talkin' 'Bout, Willis? |
| |
The ole Moonlighting alum is back, saving the world as John McClane for a fourth time in Live Free Or Die Hard. This one's pretty not bad, too. His sidekick is the young upstart from those Apple commercials. (The quasi-hipster "Mac" character on the right, not the doughy "PC.") Ah, and Kevin Smith plays a super-nerdy, mom's basement-dwelling hacker who lends a helping hand in the end.
Bruce Willis looks fit for the challenge; dome's nicely shaved, one-liners still spew out effortlessly, and he just barely eludes all manner of beyond-deathly explosion. He's an analog fogey in a digital apocalypse. (Is that part of their campaign jargon? Cannot recall, but it sounds awesome.)
Also worth mentioning, the main villain is played by Timothy Olyphant (who also goes bald in the upcoming Hitman flick), and he does NOT have an indeterminable European accent here. That's refreshing, and relevant, for nowadays the enemy lies within, as we all know. His heavy is Maggie Q, who also does her thing in MiIII.
This movie is a welcome addition to our Die Hard library, which includes the original Die Hard, Die Hard: With A Vengeance and Die Hard: Vendetta: Prima Official eGuide. We all need Official eGuides in life. Without them, we're just savages... savages that can only be tamed by McClane.

Movie Review: Why Did I Get Married? The standard for Black Films has been set with "Why Did I Get Married?" as the film brought in 21.5 million it's first weekend and sits at 1 at the box office. Check out my review below on this wonderful film.
Hot Dog and soda in hand, I turned to my right to ask him where we should sit, a question I always ask. Yet this time he wasn't to my right, nor my left, then I remembered I told him he could stay home and work while I go to see Tyler Perry's "Why Did We Get Married?". So I chose a seat, took off my coat, and devoured my hot dog. Mustard dripped on my shirt and I waited for him to start laughing, but the only sound I heard were there loving whispers of couples around me. At that moment I knew the answer for myself of "Why Did I Get Married?"; of why I plan on getting married. My purpose for seeing the film was to just write a review but I ended up walking away with so much more than just a review in mind. The movie allowed me to walk away with a better understanding of the tools and dedication it takes to sustain a solid and functional relationship.
Tyler Perry hit home with this movie for a lot of couples, even those not married. "Why Did I Get Married?" shined light on the key principles of relationships through the trials of the couples in the movie. Patricia (Janet Jackson) and husband Gavin (Malik Yoba) were the perfect couple in the movie. Well it appeared they were the perfect couple until their lack of communication was exposed when Patricia found out that Mike blamed her for the accidental death of their son. Selfishness was evident in the relationship between Terry (Tyler Perry) and his wife Dianne (Sharon Leal). Dianne was so career driven that Terry and their daughter had to make an appointment for mommy time. Terry wanted another child yet Dianne didn't want to compromise.

Foxy Brown Placed In Solitary Confinement
The staff at the Rose M. Singer facility, however — where Brown has been jailed since August 22 before her sentencing— don't seem to be as patient. The rapper's manager, Chaz Williams of Blackhand Entertainment, confirmed to MTV News that Foxy has been ordered into solitary confinement, although he did not confirm some details that the New York Post reported on Wednesday (October 23).
The paper said Foxy is set to remain in solitary for 76 days due to three separate infractions that occurred over the past 30 days, according to a source. The first of the three incidents that Brown is being disciplined for occurred October 3, according to the Post, when the rapper and another female inmate got into a scuffle that had to be broken up by prison officials. The next day, Brown was accused of verbally assaulting officials and refusing to take a mandatory drug test.
(The infractions do not include her recent late arrival to a court date in Brooklyn. She allegedly refused to leave her cell until she'd changed into a different outfit and applied makeup, leading her to miss a bus scheduled to transport her to the courthouse. She then refused to leave the facility without eating lunch first.)
The Department of Correction reviewed matters and placed the rapper in "punitive segregation." She is only permitted to leave for one hour each day to see visitors, meet with her attorney or partake in a limited number of recreation options. The other inmate involved in the fight was given 11 days of solitary confinement.
A call placed to the Department of Correction by MTV News did not confirm whether Foxy (real name: Inga Marchand) was placed in solitary confinement. Her lawyer, New York State Senator Jack Sampson, was unavailable at press time, according to a representative at his office.

Halloween used to mean beating underclassmen with flower socks and egging our annoying neighbors windows. We showed you the infamous Anna Rexia costume, but if your chick-of-the-moment is too self conscious to rock that costume, here's some more options that bring out her inner promiscuity.

XXL Decade of Dominance
Having retired a year-and-a-half ago from his day job as the greatest rapper alive (you can imagine how boring that could get), Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter has been putting his focus elsewhere of late. On top of his co-ownership of Roc-A-Fella Records, Rocawear clothing, the 40/40 Club and Armadale Vodka, he signed a major sneaker deal with Reebok and took a minority stake in an NBA franchise, the New Jersey Nets, which he plans to help relocate to his home borough of Brooklyn.
But early this year, the world got perhaps its best look yet at the intelligence that Jay-Z has. Folks have been predicting the dissolution of the Roc-A-Fella empire since 2002. That summer, while he was on a yacht in the Mediterranean—the first real vacation he'd ever taken, he said—his longtime partner Damon Dash fired a slew of staffers and announced the promotion of an old Harlem cohort, the rapper Cam'ron, to vice president. Jay vetoed the move when he got home, and the rift became public. Over the next year, rumors spread that Jay was leaving the Roc—and its joint-venture agreement with Def Jam Records—to start a new label, S. Carter Records, under Warner Bros. Music (Warner Bros. having recently been taken over by Jay's friend and mentor, former Def Jam chief Lyor Cohen.)

Jaman.com Makes it Easy to Find a Movie for Every Mood
Jaman.com, Inc., the leading Internet service that delivers feature-length international and independent films in hi-def, today announced several new and improved search features based on community feedback that make it easier to find movies suited to an individual's tastes. Unlike other movie download sites, Jaman uses the power of its community to discover, interact, and share recommendations with other members and help users find the movies they want to see.
"The number one question we receive from our users is 'how do I find a movie I want to watch?'" says Jaman CEO, Gaurav Dhillon. "With our upgrades and new features, we're making it even easier to answer that question by utilizing our best asset -- our community."
The new Movie Finder feature allows Jaman members to create a personal profile that customizes film recommendations based on individual tastes. By adjusting four different preferences, from serious to funny, mellow to charged, deep to shallow and tears to bullets, the Movie Finder provides the most relevant film suggestions based on the member's selection as well as help connect members who share similar tastes.
In addition to the Movie Finder, new and improved searching and browsing features make it simpler to discover movies in Jaman's library of thousands of titles. Visitors can quickly find movies by genres like comedy, drama and action, as well as movies by specific regions like North America, Asia, and Europe. And, with the new discovery by tag function, Jaman visitors can find groups of movies by keywords including terms like Independent, Bollywood, suspense, biography and more.
Joost to Broadcast Live TV (Maybe)
An interview with content strategy and acquisition EVP Yvette Alberdingkthijm, reports (via ZNF): "Joost plans to begin testing live TV shows alongside its on-demand content in the first quarter of 2008." The service is said to provide a "catch-up option to watch on-demand shows following live transmission" and allow for bookmarks of their favorite show or sports action moments, which I assume means they can share them with others. But don't get your hopes up yet... the feature will require distributors to acquire costly live Internet rights licenses to provide such content.
When an Apple TV Falls Far From The Tree
Seriously, what is up with Apple TV? It's been such a spectacular commercial failure (in my opinion), that I now have to wonder (in paranoid fashion) if there's a master plan we the public are simply not aware of. Since the Apple TV launched earlier this year, it's been heavily eclipsed by other online video news and new hardware players like Vudu and the new TiVo. Apple's given its TV box virtually zero attention and the company refuses to publish sales numbers. (Analyst estimates are low)
So what's the deal? Was Apple TV created just to give the company a brand in the living room video space? Is Apple biding its time until a 2.0 version is ready to take the world by storm? Or is Apple TV just a flop?
More Vudu Video On Demand Details
Vudu is in town (NYC) and Gizmodo was given a briefing. Back in April I heard the Vudu video-on-demand box would land at a price point competitive with AppleTV ($300-$350). However, Giz now reports the device will be launched later this year "somewhere under $500."
Vudu will have a few things going for it such as a large library of thousands of flicks, instant playback of content, and a rich yet simple interface. But that $400 - $500 price point (plus the cost to rent or buy movies) will be hard to overcome in a marketplace where everyone's cable or satellite provider offers video on demand - plus multifunction devices like the Xbox 360, AppleTV, and TiVo also provide movie downloads. Additionally, HD purists (who have the motivation and disposable income needed for this device) will balk at the upscaled 480p content (without even seeing it). And the fact is, the economical Netflix snail-mail DVD rental solution is still working well for most. I may spontaneously order a flick on Xbox or TiVo, but the bulk of my movies (and TV shows) are delivered via Netflix.
Closer To A Netflix Set-Top-Box?
Several months ago Netflix brought on Anthony Wood (founder of ReplayTV) to "deliver movies directly to subscribers' televisions via the Internet"- substantiating years of set-top box rumors and speculation. It now appears they're closer to making it a reality given a recent Netflix trademark update filing:
Computer hardware, set top boxes and computer software, namely audio and video receivers and transmitters and computer software programs enabling receipt, download, playing, viewing, and rental of audio and video programming through the use of internet connections to computer hardware and receiver and transmitter apparatuses that connect to a television set or monitor.
If you're taking requests, Netflix, I'd like to suggest maintaining the current online viewing fee structure (with super-size upsell options) and introducing hardware @ $199 with $50 price reductions every six months to hit the 99 dollar magic number within a year. Can you succeed where others (Akimbo, Moviebeam) have failed?

Redwood City, Calif. - Video game publisher and developer Electronic Arts announced on Thursday an agreement with Elevation Partners to acquire VG Holding Corp. -- the owner of both BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios -- in a deal valued at over $775 million.
New York - CBS has acquired Dotspotter, a San Francisco-based celebrity gossip blog, for around $10 million, Valleywag reported. Co-founded by former Yahoo vice president Anthony Soohoo, Dotspotter launched its site in January, which in addition to celebrity-related news also features social networking elements.
New York - Viacom's MTV Networks on Thursday unveiled a redesigned TVLand.com website, which now features full-length streaming episodes of classic TV series including "The Andy Griffith Show," "Leave It To Beaver" and "Gunsmoke." Well, Behance is a new portfolio and networking service created for professional artists to share and work within a helpful and constructive community. SANTA MONICA, Calif. - O.J. Simpson is getting his fake Rolex watch back. The timepiece, seized earlier this week by attorneys for Fred Goldman, was ordered returned to the former football star after it was determined to be a knockoff made in China. Goldman has won a multimillion-dollar wrongful death judgment against Simpson, but the watch has so little value it falls under an exemption in the judgment excluding jewelry worth less than $6,075. Goldman lawyer David Cook said his client will comply with Friday's order by Superior Court Judge Gerald Rosenberg."While we are clearly disappointed with the outcome, this tells us that collecting on this judgment, against this guy, is really tough," Cook said. Cook had hoped the watch might be worth as much as $22,000, but an appraisal from San Francisco jeweler Shreve & Co. concluded it was worth only about $100. Simpson had told his lawyer, Ronald Slates, he paid $125 for it. Cook told Rosenberg he had a buyer willing to pay as much as $10,000 for the watch because it was Simpson's. But Slates argued that didn't mean Simpson was obligated to let Cook sell his watch, and the judge agreed. Had he agreed to let Cook try to sell the watch, Slates said, Cook might have tried to go after other Simpson possessions of little value, claiming he could also sell them at a huge markup."We don't want to create a precedent where they can do that and we're forever faced with it," Slates said.Simpson was acquitted in a criminal trial of the 1994 murders of Goldman's son, Ron Goldman, and Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson. After their families sued him for wrongful death, a civil court jury found him liable for the killings and ordered that he pay $33.5 million.

Since opening two and a half years ago, Wynn Las Vegas has built up a reputation as the go-to hotel on the Vegas strip through great rooms (decked out with floor-to-ceiling windows and 310-thread-count sheets) and even better amenities (an in-house Ferrari dealership and one of the best golf courses in town).
Berluti, a bespoke shoemaking company more than 100 years old (there's something to be said for tradition), is known for creating comfortable, luxurious shoes.
Toasted in the pages of Wine Spectator, New York Magazine and The New York Times, Crush Wine & Spirits brings together some of the best noses for wine in the city, like Robert Schagrin, Josh Guberman and restaurateur Drew Nieporent.
The search for a favorite scissor-man is an ongoing quest, but after you've seen Truman's you might be ready to throw in the hot towel. An old-school barbershop with modern upgrades—like flat screens, private pedicure rooms and a full-service bar—Truman's is home to the most low-key facial you'll find.
If standard jeans no longer do it for you, Earnest Sewn has something that will. They combine classic denim, an extravagant dye process and bespoke tailoring to bring you jeans so exceptional, you shouldn't even be allowed to call them "dungarees."
She accompanied you to an entire season of Yankees games, makes weekend brunch-runs while you nurse your hangover in bed and wore that little Kiki De Montparnasse number last night for no reason at all. Come on, it's time to give back. And now you can do just that by treating her to a special @Grand/MEDIA viewing of Legally Blonde: The Musical (sometimes you just have to take one for the team).

Dstrukt & Wordpress I can't say this enough, but Wordpress is the shit. I love it. I'm addicted to it. I can't live without it. Yesterday, the Wordpress team released the long waited version 2.3 which contains loads of nice new features.
My favorite is TAGS. I'm now able to tag my posts, which is f**king great because I hate to be finite with the categories. From one thing to the other, my man Chris, mr Dstrukt asked me for some help implement a WP blog (that's why this Wordpress-Love-Is-In-The-Air-Post) to his current site - which by the way shows one of my typefaces, Wyld..
As Kanye enters his thirties and releases his third full-length album, Graduation
I'm not trying to be overly poetic, but there's something about Kanye West that puts him on a different plane than almost everyone else making contemporary music. In a day and age where culture and politics are constantly shifting, there remains an immovable truth about him.
That is to say, there's something really sincere about his effort, despite—or perhaps because of—the paradoxes that he's bundled up in. He blurs the lines between aesthetic and content, confidence and insecurity, and the whole time you never really know if it's planned or if it was effortless. And at the end of the day it doesn't matter; the fact that you even question it is testament to the deftness of his skill.

San Francisco - Sugar Publishing, a San Francisco-based online media network for women, said on Wednesday that it will acquire ShopStyle, a social shopping website focused on women's fashion. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. ShopStyle will continue to operate independently at ShopStyle.com, with Andy Moss, the company's founder and CEO, serving as the unit's general manager.
The site allows women to cross-shop thousands of apparel, shoe and accessory brands from a number of different stores. Sugar said that it plans to integrate ShpStyle's technology across its network. In a related move, Sugar Publishing announced plans to change its name to Sugar Inc., to better reflect the company's growing reach.
Washington - The Smithsonian Institution has launched the website for its new National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is seeking user-generated content including essays, recorded oral histories and eventually video, the Associated Press reported.
The organization used $1 million in hardware, software and services donated by IBM to create the site; the physical museum is slated to open in 2015 on the National Mall in Washington.
"You've got the sort of historical materials on major people and major moments linked directly to the kind of bottom-up recollections of common folk," John Tolva, IBM's senior manager for cultural programs, told AP.
"You can link, visually depict, how your memory relates to the other kind of grand narratives of African American history -- the narratives of civil rights, Frederick Douglass and W.E.B. DuBois." "The culture of the African American experience ... is too important to wait five or 10 years until the building is open," added Lonnie Bunch, the museum's founding director.
In the middle of acquiring Cash Money assets, Lil Wayne has big things on his mind: life with Trina, and how he came this close to signing with Jigga. In this revealing Q&A, Benjamin Meadows-Ingram explores the mind of Birdman Jr. as he spreads his wings.
Every rapper is an actor, at least on some level. But that being said, Lil Wayne is far from Hollywood. The 23-year-old native of New Orleans' 17th Ward, Hollygrove to be exact, is a rough-looking young cat. Tats blanket his body, right down to the script scrawled across his eyelids.
Point being, even though plenty of ladies love him, his is not the mug of Tinseltown's romantic leads. Or, as Wayne himself jokes when the conversation turns to talk of the silver screen,
"What they gonna do, put me in Menace II Society 2?" //Of course, that's not to say that Dwayne Carter doesn't live the fabulous life. Raised a Cash Money Millionaire - he first linked up with the label that put bling-bling in your mouth back in 1993, when he was just 11 - Wayne has grown from boy to man playing an integral role in a label notorious for its fascination with material goods.
He's pushed luxury rides since he first learned how to drive and rocked an icy grill years before Paul Wall came on the scene. But every tale has its dramas, whether in a theater near you or played out behind closed doors.
And Wayne's story is no different. He's been shot in the chest (self-inflicted), fathered a daughter when he was just a kid himself, and watched some of his best friends—or at least his label mates—turn their backs on him in public.
And then, two years ago, after being written off as another rap footnote, he exploded back onto the scene with his acclaimed fourth solo album, Tha Carter.
Rumors of a move to Roc-A-Fella Records and a highly publicized romance with Trina followed, as did a growing war of words with both B.G. and Juvenile. Then, just as 2005 was closing, he dropped Tha Carter II, his best album to date.
Led by the explosive single "Fireman," the project scanned more than 244,000 in its first week of release. Just days after finding out Tha Carter II would go down as the highest Cash Money debut ever, he sat down in his hotel suite high above Times Square, popped a sour-apple Blow Pop in his mouth, and opened up about his rise to the top. .

24: As a new up and coming artist what do you think you bring to the table that will make a label take you over another?
Nicki: Basically, I'm that next rap super star I have my cape on and let's get it in!
24: How long have you been rapping and what made you want to become an artist?
Nicki: I have been rapping for about 2 years and I get inspired by everyone that's putting out good music from Hip Hop to R&B.
24: Why do you think there is no dominant female rapper in the game right now?
Nicki: I think there is once you still have artist like Remy Ma, Lil Kim and EVE but they just need that support again like when Kim had B.I.G. around and EVE had the whole Ruff Ryders.
24: So Do you think you can Change that and Why?
Nicki: Yes, because I'm multi talented I do it all dance, sing, and I write my own rhymes and I don't take myself to seriously because I feel like a lot of females walk around with the screw face and it not even that serious.
24: What are some of the projects you have been working on?
Nicki: I'm working on my new mixtape it's probably going to be called "SuckerFree" because I don't fuck with suckers no more, so the people should look out for that.
24: I recently saw your cover for your new mixtape it was very different and creative who came up with the idea?
Nicki: I came up with that idea, we had the title for the mixtape already and I came up with the concept just because I thought it would be different and cute at the same time. The concept means that play time is over and I'm coming out of the box doing what I want to do saying what I want to say and stop taking Nicki for a joke.
24: What song that's out best describes Nicki Manja?
Nicki: Fabolous "Make Me Better" featuring Ne-Yo because I'm about to make the game better and put us women back at the top where we belong!
24: Anything you want to promote or say to the people?
Nicki: Thank's for the support, shout to Southside Jamacia, Queens that's where I'm from and Dirty Money Records!
