Pulling into Osijek, eastern Croatia, we head down the main road to
the club. Little kids come running out to see the big. blue bus. A
coach is still a novelty round these parts. We pass the phalanxes of
drab, soviet -era apartment blocks whose pock- marked and dreary
facades wear their bullet holes and shell splinter damage like a
teenager with a bad skin condition. This town was totally destroyed in
the war says igor, our promoter. But he and his partner phillip,
started the club (osijek united) to make a statement about how they and
their neighbouring Serbian punk rockers are victims of the war.

Fifteen
years on but the old hatreds still simmer. For seven hundred years
Croatia (the oldest kingdom in Europe) was under the oppressor’s yoke.
The Ottoman Turks, the Austro-Hungarian empire, Tito’s hardline
communist Yugoslavia………… Thirty klicks east, just by the serbian border in
the  of Vukovar, , some of the worst atrocities of the
“ethnic cleansing” and the nasty 90’s Balkans war took place. Fuelled
by nationalism, religious bigotry and racist hate the town witnessed a
paroxysm of rage and ditches choked with bodies are still being
disinterred. This generation is not going to make the same mistake as
their parents. It’s important to them that their politicians know that
the kids are united (hence the name of the venue) and they will not
again be manipulated for political ends. They are extremely happy that
we have made the effort to come to their out-of-the way town. They are
empowered they say and want us to tell all our contacts about them.

At
the border checkpoint the young guard comes on the bus to check the
passports. Confronted with the living dead tumbling out of the bunks at
first he recoils. We mention Croatian star Luka Modric. Tottenham
Hotspurs football club! – yes he knows...he asks for a cd and in return
offers the name of his favourite Croatian ska band. He’s a fan.

On the inside we are all the same……………..

The Toasters are proud to announce that in 2009 we will be sponsoring THE MALIMA PROJECT which is a Cameroon (west africa) based charity to benefit GOURIA which is located in the extreme northern mountains of that country. The aim is to assist the villagers by providing direct help for such projects as improved schools, more and better teachers, well-building and so on.

The funds are mainly disbursed by the villagers themselves under direct supervision of MP representatives and in this way the project avoids going through third party bureaucracies such as the Red Cross or Unicef, or the government of Cameroon, where so much of the budget disappears in administration costs or straight out theft

Helping Africa - one village at a time

Last night in Las Vegas the Toasters dedicated their set at the International Ska Circus to the memory of Steve Hex aka Karl Steven Laforge. Although it was not possible to get the band back to NYC mid-tour we did have the opportunity to bring KSL out here with us.

-->[if !supportEmptyParas]-->  -->[endif]-->

Steve was a massive influence. Not only as a co-founder of the group but also as a key- thinker, industrious, positive and astute. The early sound of the band was largely built around his keyboard stylings before we upsized to the horn-driven sound that characterizes the band today. Along with our gang of fellow miscreants, Vicky Rose and Gary Eye, and then shortly thereafter Messrs Grinnell, Dugan, Reginato and the Unity 2, we managed to create a Frankenstein"s monster that rampaged out from the crucible of the lower east side to take over the world. And in fact is still doing it.

-->[if !supportEmptyParas]-->  -->[endif]-->

Steve's contributions to the band are innumerable. In the dark hours of tours most foul his caustic sense of humour and pragmatism were often what kept us going. Steve's chapter in the Toaster's history will be a long and colourful one.

-->[if !supportEmptyParas]-->  -->[endif]-->

But most of all what made KSL stand apart was the man himself. There are few people that I personally rate as being my friends. Steve was one of those. Whenever we saw each other –Steve had the ability to just show up when you least expected him – it was if time had stood still and we simply took up where we left off. That's a rare gift, but Steve was a master at it. Acerbic wit, a black sense of humour drier than the Sahara, and a lot of  heart. The world needs more Laforges, not less of them

-->[if !supportEmptyParas]-->  -->[endif]-->

So here's to you KSL. Wherever you are I'm sure somebody is getting a zinger right about now.
