Lite View. MySpace has a new feature we call "Lite View." The purpose of the feature is to speed up page load if you visit a page that is bogged down by embeds. For example, say you hit a page filled with 5 YouTube Videos, 2 RockYou Slideshows and 3 Flash-heavy apps. A page like that is going to take a long time to download, especially if you're on a slow dial-up conncetion. Maybe you just want to see your friends activity stream, blog posts, or just want to leave them a message or comment. Well now you can click "Lite" in the nav bar to get a simplified, fast-loading version of their page. To switch it back to the full, just click Full. It toggles back and forth, and it'll stay on one setting while you browse other profiles until you switch it back.

Profile Shortcuts. We also have a profile shortcut feature that you should be aware of. Whenever viewing a profile, take a look at the nav bar--you'll see the users name at the end of the menu. There's a dropdown menu there that you can use to send a message, add a coment, or even go to other parts of a users profile (photos, videos, bulletins, or blogs for example). These shortcuts are easy because they're right at the top, but they're especially useful when a user has customized their page and made it difficult for you to find their contact links. Enjoy!

10 Questions answered -- Actually 11, but 10 sounds better.

How can I crop or edit my photos on MySpace? Go to your own photos page. Click on an individual photo page. Click the "Customize Photo" button. We've got an awesome new photo editor.

How can I avoid solving those CAPTCHA "security codes" when using MySpace? Verify your PC by entering in a code we'll send you on a mobile phone, and you'll never see CAPTCHAs on MySpace again. Click here.

How can I message more than one person at a time? You can now send messages up to 60 people at once. Instead of typing in the people's names over & over, try creating a friend category for groups of people you message on a regular basis. Friend categories are created on the friends page. Click the "My Categories" Tab.

What is that number next to the Mail and Inbox menu items? That number shows how many UNREAD messages you have in your inbox. If you have messages from 2 years ago you haven't read, you'll see them reflected in this number, so be sure to go back and find all your old messages.

How can I make Profile 2.0 completely private? You can specify who can see any module on a 2.0 profile. Every module on profile 2.0 has "visibility" setting which lets you make it viewable by friends, by everyone, or by a specific friend category. Mouseover the module while in the profile 2.0 editor to access the visibility setting. You can even remove a module entirely so no one can see it--even your friends won't see it.

How can someone see my comments or friends if I'm using "Hide Codes"? Some users put "hide codes" on their proflie which covers up their friends, comments, last login date, etc. These codes really only mask what a user can see looking through a normal browser view. Anyone who knows how to view the source of your page can see everything you're trying hiding with hide codes. Also, hiding your friends does not make your friends PAGE or your comments PAGE private. For that reason, using hide codes does not really protect your privacy. If you want to make these things truly private, you need to switch to profile 2.0 where you can actually REMOVE those elements from your page (rather than mask them with hide codes). And you also need to go to "Privacy" page from "My Account" to turn on the Privacy settings for your friends and comments page.

How can I make my profile private on Mobile? There's a specific setting for privacy on mobile phones. If you want your profile to be public or private on mobile, go to "my account" and then "privacy" and adjust your setting.

How do I show my name under my picture like everyone else is doing? Go to "My Account" then "Contact Info" and check the box "Show my full name wherever my name and photo appear on MySpace." Click here for a shortcut.

How can I avoid typing my password everytime I login? Download the MySpace toolbar which stores your login info, and gives you alerts for new messages/comments/friend requests, in your browser without having to visit your home page! Get it here.

How do I show my Status/Mood & Activities on my page? You can't in profile 1.0. Upgrade to profile 2.0, then click the modules section and add the modules by clicking on them.

How do switch back from profile 2.0 to 1.0?  There is a "Go Back" button at the top of the page, within the editor. After you click Go Back you'll see a "Switch to Profile 1.0" option. If you don't see that option it's because you signed up after April 2nd, when we made Profile 2.0 the default. New MySpace users do not have the option of using 1.0.

You can get rid of Captchas on MySpace! Captchas are those annoying little codes you're asked to enter when you're doing important stuff like sending messages, posting comments or adding friends.

They are necessary to curb spammers, but they're also annoying and slow you down.

Now you can verify your PC so you'll stop seeing CAPTCHAs while you're logged in on any browser from the machine you verify. You'll need a cell phone to receive the verification code.

Just click here to verify.

A few things to note. 1) This feature is available for US users only. We'll be expanding to other territories soon. 2) If you have multiple MySpace accounts, you'll have to do it for both accounts. 3) You are not signing up for text alerts or any MySpace SMS functions by verifying. Your cell phone is used ONLY to verify your machine and turn off captchas. If you'd like to sign up for MySpace SMS alerts, or if you'd like to be able to update your status via SMS, go here.

Some more new features rolled out this week!

Profile 2.0 users can now add two new modules to their profile pages: activities and status/mood. (Look at my profile for an example.) Displaying this info on your profile makes it easy for your friends to stay updated, even if they miss your status & activities updates on their home page. We've also revamped the video slider module in profile 2.0, and it now fits any width/column size you chooose. To add these features to your 2.0 style profile, click the "modules" option in Customize profile. If you haven't updated to 2.0 yet, choose "Customize Profile" from the "Profile" dropdown.

Photo Editing or "Customize Photos." MySpace now has a rich, full-featured photo editor built into your photos page. Go to your photos page and click into an individual photo. You will see a new "Customize Photo" button. Click it and you'll be able do all kinds of cool things with your photos. There are the basics--crop, resize, rotate, colorize, but there's so a lot more--you can add speech bubbles/notes, and manipulate the photo in very sophisticated ways similar to Photoshop. Check it out! (Note: The photo editor is only turned on in US right now, it will launch in other countries by tomorrow.)

MySpace Toolbar. Tired of typing your email & password to login over & over? The Toolbar stores your login info so you never have to enter your password again! You can also get alerts for new messages, comments and friend requests from the toolbar, so you are instantly updated when there's something new on MySpace. It works for PC & Mac so try it out today! http://www.myspace.com/toolbar

You know how you can change your display name or default picture? You know how you have some friends who change it everyday or 10 times a day? You know how you can never find or identify them beacuse they change it all the time?! Well that's the thinking behind the "display my full name" on MySpace.

We put this feature out there almost six months ago, but people weren't really noticing it, so I wanted to put up this announcement to spread the word.

You're now able to show your full name on MySpace under your picture, while your display name stays on top. Look at my picture to the left, you'll see "Tom" above my picture and "Tom Anderson" underneath it. It's that simple.

To turn it on for myspace/profile, click here.

The idea is that your full/real name should never change, even if you decide to give yourself a new nickname for a few months (or an afternoon). This makes it easier to find your friends in search, or in any of the places where you can type in your friends name to do something:

 Tagging them in a photo
Finding them on your friends list
 Inviting them to an event
 Composing a mesage
On the status history page when you just want to show ONE person's status history

We have some rules around this. If you're going to display your full name, it must be your real name. If you don't want to display it, that's fine. But if you are going to choose to display it, then it must be real. This to avoid confusion, and to make sure the purpose of the feature isn't ruined by people putting goofy stuff in there.

Finally, just to let you know, we'll be adding this in more places--you'll just be able to type in a friends name to find them in other areas where it makes sense. Instead of searching a list of friends, you'll be able to type in a friends name to create a preferred list for a blog, to put someone in a friend category, or to select your top friends, etc.

This morning we launched some new music features. Some really cool stuff!  Here's an update:

New music player & playlist pages. The player has a different look/color scheme and now includes a "Playlists" link which links to the other playlists you make. On your profile playlist you can display 10 songs, but you can make 100s of playlists with 100s of songs on your playlist page. As you probably noticed last week, there's a link on the top of your profile next to your "Pics & Vids" link that links to playlist page just like the player's playlist link. So start making playlists beyond what you see on your profile, and start sending your friends to your playlist page to check it out! (Or, if you're making playlists just to listen to, you can just enjoy it youself.)  You can also randomize which songs play on your player. Go to My Account / Miscellaneous and check the music player settings.

New music player for artists & album pages.
The artist player now shows the songs the artists choose to feature. To listen to the artist's albums, click the album link at the bottom of the player, and then flip through the album slider to find the album you want. Click on the album and you're taken to the album page where you can see the entire track list and listen from the page. Artists are dying to know how many plays they receive each day. That info is still there, but its not displayed right on the player -- you just have to click "statistics" at the bottom of the player to pull up the stats page. We'll increase the size of the total playcount font, as many users have commented that it's too small!

More Music!
We are adding more and more songs to MySpace Music including the entire discography / back catalogue for most artists. We literally ingest 1,000s of songs every day. And what's key is that it is legal/legit and free for you to stream. If you didn't see an artist or song last week, or a month ago, check again because we're working very hard to bring in all the artists.

Bugs/Problems.
If you can't see the player or you're having trouble loading, try clearnig your browser cache, and restarting your browser. Once you start fresh, it should work fine -- in fact, it should be faster & smoother than the old player! The links to Albums, Statistics and Playlists are a little hard to see right now, because they weren't loading properly, but this should be wrapped up over the next few hours. We are working dilligently to get everything working smoothly Thanks for your patience!

Search.
We revamped the music search last week. Now you can search for artist, song, or album. All the results come back in one search. You can preview/play a song within the search results. You can even drag and drop songs into your playlsits from the search page. Try it out!

Note: Non-US users will be able to see album and playlist pages soon, we’re just working out the translations so the pages look ok. While we don’t yet have all of the licenses for everyone around the globe to stream ALL content, a good amount of it is available for you and, at minimum, we want to allow you to view your US-based friends’ playlists and check out the full discography of your favorite artists.  Stay tuned, we’ll be opening these pages up to you in the coming weeks. If you live in the US and can't access these new features, check your account settings page to make sure you're really set to US culture. You may be set to another country, where you can' t access the feature!

What's Coming
° Soon you'll be able to customize the look of the player (look for this in April), and we're working on many other enhancements to make sharing and creating playlists easier.
° We changed the position of the stats on the player because we're going to begin showing even more play stats in the near future and we needed more room to display them!
° I know unsigned bands are wishing they could still offer free downloads. That feature will be returning. We just had to close this down to make sure that music wasn't being downloaded inappropriately.

We launched several new features over the last few days. Here's a recap.

Status & Mood History. Now when you update your status, your old posts won't be wiped out. Just click "view more" next to anyone's status post and you'll see their old posts. Click "View all" at the bottom of the status & mood module on home to see everyone's past updates. (You can also access status & mood history from the Friends drop down menu.) We started recording them about 2 weeks ago. You can delete any post you made by clicking the x to the right of your post on the "view all" page. To narrow down what you want to see on that page, you can type in a friend's name, choose to see only your top friends, or filter the list by friend category. (To make a friend category go to the friends page and click the "my category" tab.) Remember you can also update your status via mobile phone. To do that, just click "my account" and "mobile" and then click "enable alerts". Once activated, just text your status to the MySpace short code 69772. Note: You do have to activate your phone to use this feature, but you do NOT have to receive text alerts to be able to update your status, so just click enable alerts and then uncheck the alerts if you dont want to receive them. (I know its counterintuitive, we're fixing it!) Click here to Enable my phone now.

Mail multiple Recipients. For about a week now, you've been able to send MySpace messages to more than one user. Right now the limit is 20 people per message. This works more like email, where you can click 'compose' and type in all the names of the people you want to receive the message. We also have a corresponding "reply all" feature when you are engaged in a message with multiple people and once you click reply all, you can click up into the "To" field and add another person.

New Mobile Site. Our mobile site - m.myspace.com - got a complete redesign. We've made it simpler & faster to use. You can choose custom moods when you update your status, pick a smiley, and it's easier to create your unique email address for mobile picture uploading. Search is better, friend updates, are better and it's easier to comment and message people. Try it out! We'll keep improving the usability of this over the next few weeks. For my blog post on mobile photo uploads, go here.

Music Playlisting. Each user now has a public music playlist page.  Before this week, you could only share the 10 song playlist on your profile. Now you can share all the playlists you make on your playlist page. Just look for the "playlists" link on a profile next to the View more: Pics Videos section. Specific playlists can be private if you want, but unless you're listening to some really cheesy music, there's no reason not to make them public. Make sure to click "edit" on any private playlist and make it public so your friends can see what good taste you have. Use the search at the top to find more songs and build playlists. You can also build playlists from the music search page (just use the search up in the header). Our music search page got an entirely new revamp that lets you preview songs right from the search results. Check out my playlist page here.

Profile 2.0. We've added over 90 new themes choices for profile 2.0. More are on the way. There is now a 3 column layout option. The apps bug is fixed. Previewing your profile now shows the actual way your profile looks and mousing over each section lets you change it. Profile 2.0 also now has an Activities module which lets you display your friend updates on your page. When a friend comes to your 2.0 profile page, he'll be able to see all the things you've done on MySpace recently (uploading photos, videos, etc.) Remember ths is optional, and, as always, you can control what information is published out to your friends via the friend updates preferences page. To update to Profile 2.0, click here.

Full Name. Finding your friends on MySpace can be hard when they change their display name all the time. When you're using "compose" on mail, or trying to filter your status & mood history by a specific user, and you start typing in "John" what happens if John changed his display name to "SuperMan 2.0". Because of this confusion, we've added the "show full name" feature. This has been out for several months, but its starting to show up all around the site. Showing your full name makes it easy for your friends to find and search for you, but allows you to change your display name when you feel like it. Check me out in your friends list, or to the left on this blog post -- you can see how it says "Tom" above my picture and "Tom Anderson" below my picture. I can change my display name to "Tommyboy" but my real name will still be there so people won't have trouble finding me in MySpace features that require you to know your friends name. To make your profile show full name, click here and check the appropriate box.

Less Steps, Easier to Use. We've been systematically changing the way features work around the site. You can now comment somebody in one step, rather than going to a new page, previewing, posting, getting a post confirmation page, then a clicking back to the object you posted on. We've added this to blogs and photos and video comments. It's coming for profiles. Inviting people to events got easier several weeks ago. Posting bulletins got easier today. Adding friends and sending messages is getting streamlined as well. Less steps means it's faster for you and easier to communicate. Plus you see less advertisements. Yay :-)

Printing everywhere. You've probably noticed the print commands we've added around the site. Small change, but really fun. It's nice to print your comments as a scrapbook, print your photos, or even make stuff out of your MySpace photos like MySpace Photo Cube, which lets you print your top friends photos so you can fold it into a photo cube. You can even print this blog!

HOW DO I GO BACK?

This was answered in my original blog post. From the Profile dropdown main menu (on the nav) choose "Customize Profile." When the editor is loaded click the "Go Back" link in the top right. Then choose the 1.0 option. Don't click it multiple times, or it'll probably show an error (that'll be fixed soon).

I DONT LIKE 2.0 BECAUSE I CANT USE LAYOUTS!

Wrong! You just can't use 1.0 layouts! And, all layouts must be placed in the new CSS box. (You cannot put layout/css codes in the About Me, or anywhere else. They must go in the CSS box.)

I'M WAITING FOR SITES TO CREATE MYSPACE LAYOUTS BEFORE I SWITCH

Try Pyzam.com, they already have 2400 layouts -- nearly all their 1.0 layouts to 2.0 Layouts! Here's a direct link to their 2.0 page: http://www.pyzam.com/myspace2layouts

HOW DO I CHANGE THE 3 NEW PICS THAT APPEAR NEAR THE TOP?

Each module has special features. To access them, click the pencil icon on the top right of the module. Once this opens up, click the text link (top right) "Edit Basic Information." From there you can choose your 3 photos. There's a bug on small screen sizes where you can't see the "Save Changes" button that sits underneath the 3 photos. If you can't see it on your screen, just go to the regular Edit Profile link from the nav menu or home page - not, the customize page, just the regular edit profile page. The Edit profile link lets you edit your profile information (without using any customization options). Since its not in a popup window, you'll be able to save the three photos here.

HOW DO I CHANGE THE NUMBER OF TOP FRIENDS?

Click the pencil in the right corner of the friends module. You'll be able to set the number of friends you'd like to display. To change the friends that actually appear there, you still need to go to friends and click the "Change Top Friends" link.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY BACKGROUND IMAGE?

Click "Advanced Edit," then choose "Background." Copy & Paste the link to the background image you want to use in the "URL" field . Then click PREVIEW to see if your image appeared properly.

WHY CAN'T I USE BASIC HTML IN EACH PROFILE SECTION? LIKE CENTER?

Some basic tags, like b, i, and center are being improperly filtered. We're converting b and i to strong and em and will have them working Wednesday morning. We're still working on center, and hope to have a fix next week.

HOW DO I MAKE MY 2.0 PROFILE PRIVATE?

With 2.0 there is no longer a single privacy on & off switch that affects the whole profile. (Your "My Account/Privacy" setting no longer applies once you convert to 2.0). Instead, you need to set the privacy on a module by module basis. The idea is you can show some things to the public, and other things to friends only. You can even show certain modules to specific categories of friends you've created on the friends page "my categories" tab. To set the privacy for a module, click the pencil in the top right, then click the radio button to choose who can see the module. Check the box "apply to all modules" if you want to make your whole profile viewable to the category you just selected.

There are little bugs here and there that were revealed when things went live to the whole site this morning. We are going to roll out a fix for several bugs Wednesday morning, November 12th (should be done by 10am). That said, the bugs are minor and you should be able to have a lot of fun with 2.0 right now. Try it out. :-)

Category: MySpace

At midnight we launched Profile 2.0. (You'll see the link for it on your Edit Profile page and in the profile menu drop down 'Customize Profile'.) Almost everything we add to MySpace comes from the feedback I receive from users. The new profile 2.0 is based on requests I've received for several years about what users want. We did beta test launches of 2.0 to smaller groups around the world. Now it's ready for everyone!

For many of you, however, I know that change is no fun. If you like your profile the way it is right now, don't upgrade. If you're feeling adventurous and want to try something new, give it a try. You can always go back. (Just click the 'Go Back' link in the top right of the editor page.) Unfortunately, 2.0 is not available to IE6 users. The advanced features of the editor just can't work with IE6. It's also not yet available for musician, filmmaker or comedian profiles.

Why Upgrade to 2.0?

Now of course there's plenty of reasons to upgrade. I hope you all do, because the new profile is faster, more customizable, and offers more privacy. Profile 2.0 retains the flexibility in customization people have come to expect from MySpace. You are capable of doing almost ANYTHING with this new profile--you can still take over your entire page and basically create your own website, ignoring the structure and basic styles that we offer. So if you really like your current profile style but want to try the new features of 2.0, you will, with some effort, be albe to get a style that resembles your old page. It's not the same as before, though, so it's going to take some exploring.

There are four big ideas with profile 2.0:

Privacy. Profile 2.0 is designed to give you granular privacy control -- you can hide or show parts of your profile, rather than making the whole profile public or private. Maybe you only want your top friends to be able to see your calendar? Or maybe you only want your work friends to see what other companies you've worked at? With Profile 2.0 you can use your friend categories as privacy switches. (If you haven't created a friend category, get with the program! :-) We launched them almost a year ago. Just go to the friends page.)  Many users have asked for the ability to hide their last login date or age, and profile 2.0 now has that option. You can also hide entire elements of your profile. If you don't want anyone to see your comments or friends list, you can make them private, while leaving the rest of your profile public or friends only, or viewable to a specific friend category.
Note: There is no longer a single setting for "public" vs "private" profiles. When you switch to 2.0, all your modules default to public. Click the pencil for a module to change it to friends only, or to assign it as viewable to a specific friend category.

Speed. The new profile loads faster than profile 1.0. You can also modify each module for faster load time, like displaying only 5 or 10 comments instead of 50. It's also faster to edit and style because you edit information while looking at your profile rather than going to a separate edit screen. It's faster to style by picking themes right within the editor. You dont need to go to a layout site, since we will have many internal themes. (Note: We are only launching with a few themes, but plan to incorporate many more.) You can hide sections without using special codes, so you don't need to search the web for special MySpace hacks.

Customization
. You can now drag and drop any module on your profile to any location, including apps. (Note: When you convert, you have select each app from the module screen to make it appear on your 2.0 profile--this is a bug that will be fixed soon.) You can also use basic templates to change the columns and basic 'containers' that hold each module. You can even have a single open box to make your profile freeform, or to hold any HTML you'd like to input. Applying color, font and background changes is built-in, and you won't have to use profile layouts sites unless you want to. We still allow users to completely take over their profile and have created a specific CSS box for users to input themes and layouts from third party sites.

Web Standards
. The new profile is fully W3C compliant. It allows profile creators much more granular control by giving names to more objects. We still expect the third party layout market to flourish and will still allow users to use themes from layout sites. When you go to third party sites, look for layouts marked 'profile 2.0' because the classic layouts won't work on the new profile.) (Note: The header and footer of every MySpace page is not fully compliant, but we'll be working towards changing that, and it should have no impact on your profile style.)

Feel free to post your thoughts/feedback on this blog.   Making the feedback public will allow everyone to benefit. Enjoy!

What About My Old Layout?

Old style (1.0) layouts will not work with 2.0. That does not mean you can't have background images, styles and customized profile layouts. It just means that all the theme/layout templates you copy & paste into your profile are going to have to be designed for the 2.0 version of the profile. On the new profile you must put your CSS in the CSS box (we don't allow it to go in any other field). We will continue to add our own custom themes. but we're still counting on all the creative people out there who've made profile layouts in the past to continue to design templates for the world to use. We are not trying to replace the theme / layout sites, just updating our underlying profile design.

How Do I go Back to 1.0?

You can switch back and forth between 2.0 and 1.0 whenever you want. To go back to your old profile, go to the profile menu choose "Customize Profile" and once the editor is loaded look for the "Go Back" link in the top right. Just click it and select 1.0 and your old theme/profile will be restored.

P.S. No, we are not forcing people to switch to this profile, and don't intend to. I know some people are happy with MySpace just the way it is.

Hello Mobile Users!
This has been a long time coming, but its finally here. You can now upload pics directly to your profile from your mobile phone! If your phone can send an email, then this feature will work for you. Here's how it works:
To upload a photo from your phone, you first have to activate from the website, myspace.com. NOTE: You cannot activate it from mobile, you have to login to myspace.com. Once logged in, click "My Account" in main nav (top right). From the My Account page, click "Mobile". Look for the 'Send Photos From Your Phone' section. Here you will see an option to choose a unique password. Be sure to use at least 6 characters and numbers. We will then generate a personalized email address for you. Don't share it with friends!

Now you can use this unique email to upload pictures to your MySpace account. Just send a picture from your phone to your personalized email and it will show up in seconds.

Tip: Add this email address to your phone book for quick access.

You can also update your status from anywhere on the go via text messaging. To enable this feature, set up your phone number on My Account and click on the Mobile link. Again, you have to login to myspace.com to go to the "My Account" section. You can't do it from your phone. Once on the Mobile page, clik Enable Alerts, which allow you to receive SMS from MySpace. You can choose to receive any number of notifications (or none – if all you want to use is the 'Update My Status' feature). Once your number is registered, just send an SMS to MYSPC (that's 69772) and the content of your text message will be your new status.
You cant change mood from a txt msg, though we are working on it. Also, custom moods will be available via WAP soon,
but they are not at present. Remember you don't have to receive alerts to udpate your status from your cel phone. But you've got to click the ENABLE ALERTS button to get started. If you don't want alerts, just uncheck the boxes for each alert after you click ENABLE ALERTS.
Enjoy!
P.S. MySpace does not charge for this service, but your phone charges apply.
