TOOLS OF WAR Gets Props Over Here! Afrika Bambaataa "TOOLS OF WAR (WHAT IS IT)? The tools are the human beings behind the words that are on the computer to keep you in the know of what is going down in the war zone of information on a highway of cyborg hu-man mental state of conscious/unconscious sleeping beings of a web to inter your net of a world of traps to awaken you with the tools of war of light and fun. Better known to you as freedom to say what you want in a written form of language - so called English - that can be transformed into hundreds of other languages by an email blast of the word from the master thinker leader of the Tools of War message that was sent. This is the TOOLS OF WAR internetweblectually speaking that is!" -- Afrika Bambaataa Jeff Chang "Tools of War has been indispensable. They helped me launch 'Can't Stop Won't Stop' in a major way--they planned events, locked down dozens of reviews and interviews all around the world, and made sure thousands of people knew about my book even before it was out. They're serious, professional and they get results. If it wasn't for Tools of War, I wouldn't have had a fraction of the success I've had. I refer them to all my good friends, and don't talk about them at all with my worst enemies! ... With my second book, Total Chaos, Tools of War really set the pace for the promotion and marketing of the book. They began the campaign, yielded dozens more hits than I ever could have expected, and were thorough and professional in all their dealings with the press. They went above and beyond my publisher's and my own expectations. I consider Tools of War an essential, indispensable, and irreplaceable part of getting my books into the world. I trust them to make it happen, and they never ever fail." -- Jeff Chang, author of "Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation" Danny Hoch "Tools Of War is the most comprehensive, professional, and truly grassroots source of information on Hip-Hop arts, education, activism and entertainment that I have experienced online or offline. I have total confidence in them on all levels: ear to the street, knowledge of public relations, thorough research, responsibility and accountability, and detail. And yeah yo, I took time to write this myself because Tools Of War takes time to let us know what we need to know that's happening." -- Danny Hoch, Actor, Writer, Director and Founder of the Hip-Hop Theatre Festival Tom Silverman "Tools of War" is more than a PR company. It builds a grassroots movement!" -- Tom Silverman, founder and CEO of Tommy Boy Records Amde Hamilton "Tools of War is one of the most professional publicists the Watts Prophets have used in our thirty-five years as artists. When I completed my new book of poetry, "Me Today You Tomorrow: Journey of a Street Poet". My good friend, Jeff Chang author of "Can't Stop, Won't Stop" referred me to Christie Z-Pabon. The contacts and reviews were timely and right on time. Her research and knowledge of the Hip Hop community made the project a hit!" -- Amde Hamilton of The Watts Prophets, author "Me Today You Tomorrow: Journey of a Street Poet" Joe Conzo "Tools of War believed in me when nobody did! They have supported me from the beginning and have introduced me and my passion of photography to the world. Tools of War is the torchbearer for the culture of Hip Hop. Respect to Christie and Jorge for believing in me and for keeping the true essence of Hip Hop alive!" -- Joe Conzo, The Man Who Took Hip Hop's Baby Pictures, Born in the Bronx! Ernie Paniccioli "In the world of Hip Hop, 'street cred' is the most sought after of all the elements. Tools of War has more than it's share. Both Christie (see her in the Hip Hop movie classic "Scratch" ) and her partner/husband Fabel are two essential pieces of Hip Hop background activity. They bring warmth, soul, knowledge of Hip Hop history and respect to everything they do. -- Ernie Paniccioli author of "Who Shot Ya?: Three Decades of Hip Hop Photography" Bill Adler "You did a great job. I'd gladly hire you again myself. Meanwhile, I talk you up to my friends. Thank you. I'm glad to have met you. " -- Bill Adler, author of "Tougher than Leather: The Rise of RUN-DMC" Alan KET "Tools of war is an integral part of my PR and media strategy. It helps me reach the core Hip Hop journalists from the US to England all the way to Australia. It's Hip Hop's best newsletter and a great bang for the buck." -Alan Ket (From Here to Fame) DJ Rob Swift"Working with Christie Z has been very profitable for my career. Her extensive connections in the music business paired with the knowledge she has of the Hip Hop culture make for the perfect combination. Honestly, I haven't worked with any publicists with such a diverse range of qualities. What's more, Christie Z is punctual and very reliable. As a result of Christie's efforts in working War Games, I appeared on the cover of DJ TIMES and even I received an honorable mention in the Village Voice among other things. Christie Z takes pride in what she does and working with her has helped take my career to the next level!" -- DJ Rob Swift, Ill Insanity Rane"Rane has had occasion to work with Christie Z-Pabon many times over the past years. Tools of War has been very helpful in connecting us with influential DJ's and increasing the visibility of our brand." -- Dean Standing: Director of Sales, Rane Corporation Felicia Pride Christie, I can't tell you how instrumental your services have been in promoting my book. Almost all of the publicity that I've received for THE MESSAGE has come through you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. USA Today featured me and THE MESSAGE on Monday. -- Felicia Pride, author of The Message Billy Jam "Tools of War and its influential overseer Christie Z-Pabon are both forces to be reckoned with in the world of serious hip-hop culture. Ask anyone in the music industry who has their pulse on what's happening within the genuine culture of hip-hop's four elements (not to be confused with the bling bling rap crap that passes as hip-hop) and inevitably Tools of War's name will come up." - Billy Jam (Hip Hop Slam, WFMU, New York Press) David Paul "Tools of War has been around forever and there's a reason why. Christie Z handles her business. Need to get an email blast out to press, retailers, industry heads and hip-hop heads all in one shot? Tools of War is the company to turn to! From drafting a press release to following through with media, Christie's attention to detail was top-notch and her contacts invaluable, both within the hip hop community and in the world of mainstream media. Tools of War was especially crucial in getting the word out internationally. I got major coverage from such UK publications as 'Straight No Chaser' and 'Undercover' magazine because of Christie. Props!" -- Adam Mansbach, author of "Angry Black White Boy" and "The End of The Jews" Kyra D. Gaunt "Christie Z-Pabon and her Tools of War marketing skills produced immediate results for my book. In less than 24 hours I received responses from around the globe that led to my being on the air and in print for weeks following. I am known to a degree that my publisher did not achieve in three months. She provided remarkable service that allowed me to build my reach in the hip-hop community and beyond! Oh yeah, and those who responded held her in the highest regard. Peace and luv to my peeps at Tools of War!" -- Kyra D. Gaunt (aka Professor G), author of "The Games Black Girls Play: Learning the Ropes from Double Dutch to Hip-Hop" Marcy Garriott "The size and scope of the mailing list is only the start of what makes Tools of War such an incredible grassroots communications tool... the most special part is how Christie worked with us to find the very best way to get our message across. Amazing energy & insight!" -- Marcy Garriott, Director/Inside the Circle DJ Kuttin Kandi "Working with Tools of War is honorable, for you know that they are trusthwory, reliant, efficient and real. I will always be grateful to Christie and Tools of War for her unconditional enthusiasm and dedication in making the "Scratch" film, dvd, and tour a success." -- Brad Blondheim, Producer of Scratch Testify Books "Tools of War is a direct pipeline to those worshiping at the altar of hip hop. Christie's commitment to both her projects and her mission is inspiring." -- Dana Albarella, Testify Books Joe Schloss "As a client of Tools of War PR, I have benefited greatly not only from their hard work, integrity, and impressive pool of contacts around the world, but also from the unparalleled level of trust that they have earned among the people that they do reach. Simply put, if it is being promoted by Tools of War, it will be taken seriously. My own experience demonstrates this: although my book was published by a small academic press, Tools of War was able to get it reviewed in major magazines in the United States (including Remix and The Source), Canada, Brazil, Sweden and the United Kingdom, as well as many underground and web publications that other publicists don't even know about. Tools of War has consistently been able to reach people that others cannot, and this is why I even recommend them to authors and artists that already have another publicist. I have gotten at least five times my money's worth from Tools of War, and I will definitely use them to promote my next book." -- Joseph Schloss, Ph.D., Tufts University. Author of "Making Beats: The Art of Sample-Based Hip-Hop" Sara Rosen "If you want to be down, really down, Tools of War will take you there. No one else can provide comparable access to the true Hip Hop community with the integrity and innovation of Tools of War. While most publicists offer smoke and mirrors, Tools of War delivers results." -- Sara Rosen, powerHouse Books Todd Souvignier "I worked closely with Christie Z-Pabon/Tools of War PR, over the course of many months, while writing my book "The World of DJs and the Turntable Culture" (Hal Leonard Corporation). Christie's help locating talent, securing interviews, researching, fact checking and eventually promoting the book were absolutely invaluable. Of course we got terrific coverage from her contacts in the music press, but her contributions went far beyond seeding reviews. I even paid her out of my own pocket for some of the work, which was worth every penny and more. I challenge you to find anyone else in this milieu with Christie's experience, respect, contacts, know-how and work ethic. Tools of War equals old school credibility, in every sense of the term. Good people, too. -- Todd Souvignier, author of "The World of DJs and the Turntable Culture" HusH Hip Hop Tours "I appreciate everything Tools of War has done for Hush Tours from its inception, from media blasts to last minute b-boy bookings. They clearly keep the planet up to date with the true spirit of hip hop." -- Debra Harris: Hush Tours http://www.hushtours.com Victor Lee "Christie's service and dedication to our projects has been outstanding. She has a great determination when setting project goals and her superb organizational skills allow her to achieve each objective quickly and efficiently. Thoroughness and attention to detail make her very skilled at her work. I'd highly recommend Christie for any projects that demand a significant amount of attention. Her people skills are terrific and I am confident in her abilities." -- Victor Lee, General Manager of Tommy Boy Records Gingko Press "Tools of War did a fantastic job helping us promote our book called "Behind the Beat: Hip Hop Home Studios" by Raph. For Bookings, please contact: FabelRSC at gmail.com Fabel is available to teach Popping and/or Locking dance master classes or workshops, host, DJ, film and/or participate in panel discussions. Lecture Demonstrations presented by Jorge FABEL Pabon(complete w/ archival film footage) Great Hip Hop SwindleHip Hop historian and practitioner, Jorge "Fabel" Pabon covers the rise, fall and resurrection of Hip Hop culture. The lecture includes key points such as: how social, political and economic dynamics played a role during the birth of Hip Hop culture, the revolutionary spirit of the culture, the effects the recording industry had on the culture and examples of how the culture is being preserved by grass roots organizations and so much more. Authentic Hip Hop artifacts from Fabel's archive are presented throughout the lecture. Includes a Q & A session. One to three hours in duration (depending on time and budget) supplemented by audio/video material. Read Fabel's article How Hip Hop Lost the Plot (The Independent - UK) The History of Hip Hop DanceJorge "Fabel" Pabon, VP of The Rock Steady Crew, describes and defines the four major foundational dance forms associated with Hip Hop culture: Lockin', Poppin', Breakin' and Rockin' with focus on the distinct history, deeper roots and vocabulary of each dance form. This lecture also focuses on the early contributions from the West Coast dance scene. Fabel also demonstrates Poppin', Lockin' and Rockin'. One to two hours in duration (depending on time and budget) supplemented by audio/video material. Includes Q & A. Note: Some information from this lecture can be referenced in his essay "Physical Graffiti" featured in Total Chaos edited by Jeff Chang. The original: Physical Graffiti (commissioned by The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum)Apache Line: From Gangs to Hip HopAlthough the documentary is a work in progress, Jorge "Fabel" Pabon has screened the one hour long rough cut at several events. "Apache Line" takes us on a journey through the trials, tribulations and triumphs of NYC street families that celebrated urban culture, through artistic expression, prior to the advent of what we know as "Hip Hop culture". This documentary is a testament to the power of flipping negative energy to positive, survival and preservation. Fabel offers additional information and further elaborates on the documentary during the Q & A session. He also presents Hip Hop artifacts that are relative to the topic. The complete presentation can be 2 to 3 hours. Learn more at myspace.com/apacheline. Note: Some information from this lecture can be referenced in Fabel's introduction to TERRIBLE T.KID 170's self titled book as well as an essay he wrote on style and fashion for Martha Cooper's "Hip Hop Files: Photographs 1979-1984". Latinos in Hip Hop A one hour lecture/demonstration that explores the presence and contributions made by Latinos in Hip Hop culture. The presentation includes rare footage and audio material that reflect the major impact made by Hip Hop's Latino legends and pioneers. Some material precedes the advent of Hip Hop and comprehensively connects the dots from earlier movements such as Mambo, Bomba, Plena, Salsa, Latin Boogaloo and Latin Soul to what eventually became known as Hip Hop. This lecture clearly reveals why Hip Hop culture was a natural succession to the urban Latino cultural experience. Jorge "Popmaster Fabel" Pabon consulted Raquel Z Rivera for her book, "New York Ricans From The Hip Hop Zone" as well as appeared in and consulted Henry Chalfant's documentary, "From Mambo To Hip Hop". He also coordinated several "Latinos In Hip Hop" conferences at various universities and has lectured alongside Professor Juan Flores, (From Bomba To Hip Hop) and Master Robert Farris Thompson (Flash Of The Spirit). About Tools of War Co-founded by Jorge "Pop Master Fabel" Pabon and Christie Z-Pabon, Tools of War was named with the idea that there are many "tools" one can use in competing/battling within Hip Hop culture: turntables, microphones, paint, one’s body, and especially one’s voice (and so on)! [The following information has been supplied and
approved by Roc Raida's wife. Thank you in advance for your kind words
and sympathy. To post front page comments, please visit http://www.myspace.com/rocraida
Anthony "Grand Master Roc Raida" Williams was born
in Harlem New York on May 17th, 1972 to Brenda Williams-Bolling & William
“Tony”
He passed away on Saturday, September 19th, 2009 from a
cardiac arrest resulting from injuries he suffered in an accident while
training in Krav Maga, a type of self defense system that he had been studying weekly
for the last two years. He was
proud that his 15-year-old daughter, Asia, shared his passion for Krav Maga and
was the only girl in their class.
At an early age, Anthony joined the Mt Neboh Baptist Church & was baptized
under the leadership of the Late Rev. William D. Gardner. It is at Mount Neboh
where he served faithfully during his youth. He was a member of the Children's
Choir, the Junior Choir, the Usher Board, and a former mascot for the Male
Chorus of which his grandfather, the Late Deacon Early Williams was a member.
Anthony Williams was both African-American and Puerto Rican.
He lived most of his life in Harlem but after marrying his soul mate, Tyeasha on
June 26, 1997, they moved to the Bronx. Several years ago, they realized their
dream of owning a home and relocated their family to Maryland. He encouraged
and shared in his wife’s dream of one day opening up her own beauty salon.
He began DJing at the age of 12, spinning at local parties
around Harlem. By 1995, Roc Raida represented the United States at the DMC
World DJ Championships and won! He was the first DJ from New York City to hold
this title and was automatically inducted into the DMC/Technics DJ Hall of
Fame. Throughout his life, he lived his passion - being a professional Hip Hop
DJ. He was blessed to have touring
the world as his day job. Williams
was honored to have worked with recording artists including Showbiz & AG,
Lord Finesse, Kool G Rap and most recently, he toured exclusively with Busta
Rhymes.
Although his family called him “Ant” (short for Anthony), he
became known worldwide as legendary DJ Roc Raida. In 1999, Grand Master status was bestowed upon him by a group
of pioneering Hip Hop DJs, during a conference at the Rock & Roll Hall of
Fame & Museum.
Before he passed, he asked his 10 yr. old daughter, Nyra,
who was the most interested, of his children, in DJing to take over for him as
a DJ. She agreed!
With a very aggressive swagger on the turntables, those who
knew Roc Raida were floored by his humbleness. His wife, Tyeasha reports, “His
notoriety amazed him every day!” He never took that for granted. Williams was also known to be very
quiet, private and easy going. His
self-control was commendable unless he was pushed to his limit and then he
would roar. In fact, Lord Finesse called his friend “the quiet lion” for this
very reason. Those closest to him have the pleasure of remembering him also as
a hilarious comedian, loving to joke and laugh.
Roc Raida through battles, performances, videos, dvds, documentaries and
even a Pepsi commercial, influenced thousands of DJs, both to party rock as
well as to battle and he took several aspiring DJs under his wing to mentor
personally. As a member of
legendary turntablist crews, The X-Men and The X-ecutioners, he along with his
brothers-in-vinyl took the world by storm, innovating, influencing and
inspiring at every turn. In 2006,
to progress and contribute to the Hip Hop DJ battle scene, he founded Roc
Raida’s Gong DJ Battle, a national DJ battle that occurs annually, combining
head to head turntablist dexterity with comedy and drama.
Not only was he a World Champion DJ, he was a dedicated father
and husband.
Anthony leaves to cherish his memories; his loving wife: Tyeasha
Williams; three beautiful daughters: Asia, Nyra & Tia; one son: Earl Tyric
Smiley; mother: Brenda
Williams-Bolling; his step-father: Clarence Bolling; mother-in-law: Clarice Powell; father-in-law: Deryl
Hunt; sister: Tamneka Bolling; 2
brother-in-laws: Willie Neat & Keith Powell; 3 aunts: Arlene Tramble,
Jacquline Knox of FL, & Jacquline (Donald) Tramble; 1 god-sister: Tina
Carter; Adoptive Grandmother: Juanita
Jackson and a host of cousins & dear friends.
Anthony is now reunited with his grandparents, Deacon Early & Helen
Williams & his Aunt Minister Carol Knox.
The family would like to acknowledge these amazing "God-sends". They
have truly been Tye's backbone throughout this ordeal. To: Henley "Pro" Halem, Sean C, Fat Man Scoop, Busta
Rhymes, DJ Premier and Christie Z. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!!!
The family would like to expressly thank Chatman-Harris
Funeral Home in Baltimore MD as well as Mount Neboh Baptist Church in Harlem NY
for their generosity and kindness.
--------------------------------------
“As one of the Godfathers of Hip Hop, this is a tremendous
loss to the Dj community. It’s sometimes rare to meet an individual who was a
supertalent, be so mild mannered and so calm. His skill level was admired
worldwide. It was pleasure to see him in action. It was a pleasure to know him.
I give my condolences to his family.”
- Grandmaster Flash
“My heart is in pain over the passing of a good friend. He’s
like a brother to me because he holds the same values I hold when it comes to
my family, friends, music and life. He will be missed but not forgotten. I will
keep his wife and children in my prayers. Rest in Peace Grand Master Roc
Raida!” – GrandWizzard Theodore
“Roc Raida was an innovator on the turntables at a time when
we thought the best of the best had been seen. His artistic wizardry
seemed so effortless it reminded me of a young GrandWizzard Theodore. His
easy going attitude was a pleasure to see in a time where most artists of his
caliber were big headed. Salute young general and RIP to our latest Grand
Master!” - GrandMaster Caz
"The Lord is forming his band right now. He called home
Michael Jackson. But he was missing a DJ that could match the skill level as
Michael. So he called upon Grandmaster Roc Raida." - DJ Scratch
“Since the day I met Raida, he was the most humble, strong willed, genuine,
ultimate competitor. The greatest DJ in my book.” - Lord Finesse
“Grand Master Roc Raida was one of the greatest DJs to ever
touch a turntable. To guys like myself and Craze who came up right after the
monumental generation of X-Men, ISP and Beat Junkies, Raida was the ultimate
inspiration as a battle DJ. For those who knew him personally, Raida was also
the kindest, more generous and funniest friends we had. He was like a mentor to
me, I can't even count the amount of times he helped me out over the years. I
feel like I just lost a big brother. He will be sorely missed.” – DJ A-Trak

Host for most of the evening was Gio (aka DJ Ace) who did a wonderful job – completely on the volunteer tip) and was a natural on the mic!!!! I want to thank everyone who volunteered to judge, host, etc. There hasn’t been a battle in LA and while this battle could have been more polished, I have to say that the community effort to bring the battle to Los Angeles, (with very little local sponsorship) is extremely commendable so I gotta give it to Manny Munoz & his crew for pulling it off! Competitors ranking in the 09 DMC West Coast Elims1. Lodus 2. Etronik 3. Mista-B 4. Shmeeze 5. 1Nemcis 6. Astonish7. Tied: Scratch Master Joe and J.P. Gunnz (both out of Seattle too) 8. Cajun Frog 9. Tied: PriMO and JuyadekI listed everyone who scored simply to encourage those who didn’t make the top 6 but also to show how varied the judging was. Top 6 of the 2009 DMC West Coast Finals: I would love to give you a play by play but am not verbally or technically equipped (or authorized LOL) to do so but I hope the DJs will post their own descriptions up. Interestingly enough, each of the 6 DJs received favor from the judges (which is not always the case) so I’ll list the top 6 in the order they placed (once again to encourage). In the top 3, each had just a crucial one point difference! 2009 DMC West Coast Champ: SHMEEZE myspace.com/djshmeezeHe blazed up from 4th place in the Elims to take the whole thing!!! God willing, they inspired everyone, including more women, to get with the program! Before the teams, Gio and D-Styles had to cut out so so Swamp's guest,
Andrew volunteered to host. He did pretty well in light of the fact –
but I have to apologize for how he introduced The Deuce when they
placed. I didn’t know that he said something about them being cute and
Asian, until Celskii told me later. I truly apologize for that, I
didn’t register him as saying it and that’s not cool because they did
truly rock and his intro came off as demeaning – esp. for history
making women! * Yes, it was announced that The Deuce came in second and The Angry Exs took 3rd but yesterday morning, I was studying the score sheets and re-checked the tally on the scores again. I apologize profusely for the confusion and can't exactly pinpoint how I messed this up but Here’s exactly how the scores looked: I can jpg them and post them if anyone needs further proof. Normally each judge writes in a Top 3 so – three of them did Judge # 1 1. Battlestar 2. Angry Exs 3. The Deuce Judge # 2 1. The Angry Exs 2. Battlestar 3. The Deuce Judge # 3 1. The Deuce 2. Battlestar 3. The Angry Exs Judge # 4’s sheet looked like this (no explicit list of top 3, just numbers next to names to rank) 4 Sofa King Dope 1 Battlestar 3 The Deuce 2 The Angry Exs I think this was the score sheet that possibly led to some confusion and mistakes. But it could also be that I was delirious from traveling all day. Whatever the reason, I own up to this mistake, as embarrassing as it is and can only chalk it up to unintentional human error. I wish all four teams could win 1st!! I sincerely apologize that this mistake was made and as soon as I landed last night in NYC, I called Celskiii and explained everything and apologized before I called Lodus to let him know that The Angry Exs came in 2nd. PS: This morning I went over the scores from the solo battle (with dread in my heart that God forbid I messed anything up there) and I am happy to announce that the tally was exactly how the host announced it on Saturday night! Thanks to DJ Raichous and Derrick who provided the sounds for the opening hour and intermissions (and they probably were rocking after I left!) Thanks to promoter Manny Munoz of Bomb & Systems for making it possible for Los Angeles to have a DMC Battle! Thanks to Bernadette Desuasido - Producer for The Filipino Channel (Yoga Frog’s cousin) who covered the event 3 channels will be broadcast their coverage: ANC (24 hour news channel), MYX (Music Channel) and TFC (the biggest Filipino Network in the World!) ANC & TFC will broadcast: Balitang America (Daily News Program) & Adobo Nation (Lifestyle / Current Affairs Magazine Show) and MYX - Built From Skratch. Especial thanks to DJ Etronik who was so determined to have the DMC West Coast held in Los Angeles that he set about finding promoters to see who could do the job (since he only wanted to battle and not be the promoter too - so there was no conflicts of interest). Just like Donnie Dee in TX and Tony Skratchere in New Orleans, Etronik is one of the DJs who has decided to take matters in his own hands and try to get a battle to go down in his city. Had he been the promoter, he would have outdone himself. I sincerely thank him (and everyone else should too) for his drive to make the battle happen in LA. Thanks to my BFF Janice who chauffered me around (took me to the airport 3x), let me stay over and handled the door at the venue for awhile. I had a great time and apologize that I had to rush off to catch my flight (which I missed anyhow since I took everything but my backpack with ID in it…ugh!) I wish I could have stayed and vibed with everyone longer!

FEB. 28: Bring Out the Sound System: The West Indian Roots of Hip Hop - Bronx NYCFebruary 28 from 3pm to 6pm. Free and Open to the Public! Featuring Kool DJ Herc, Kool DJ Red Alert, Just Ice, Ralph McDaniels, Patricia Chin, Dr. Natasha Lightfoot, Brother Vincent and more! The Point CDC 940 Garrison Ave. Bronx NY 10474 thepoint.org. 6 train to Hunt's Point. Presented by The Point & City Lore. Saturday, February 28, 2009 Bring Out the Sound System The West Indian Roots of Hip Hop
When discussing the origins of Hip Hop, most agree that it began in the Bronx. Many also agree that it is an African-American artform with many antecedents. It is a known fact that the trinity of Hip Hop DJ pioneers have roots in the West Indies including DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash.
Other early artists who made significant contributions to the music include Kool DJ Red Alert, KRS-One, Doug E. Fresh, among others. The sound systems brought out into the parks by Jamaican DJs and the tradition of toasting are among the influences to be debated and discussed.
Post World War II Bronx had a growing community of West Indian immigrants, particularly after the U.S. Immigration Act of 1965. Recreation rooms at 1520 Sedgwick where Kool Herc deejayed and Bronx River Houses where Afrika Bambaataa held court as well as many local parks and early venues like the Black Door, where Grandmaster Flash rocked, mark the cradle of Hip Hop.
"Bring Out the Sound System: The West Indian Roots of Hip Hop" presented by City Lore and The Point CDC, will take place on Saturday, February 28th, 2009 from 3 to 6 pm at The Point CDC, at 940 Garrison Avenue in the Bronx NY 10474
Dr. Natasha Lightfoot of the Bronx African-American Oral History Project, will lead a discussion featuring Hip Hop pioneers and legends including Kool DJ Herc, Kool DJ Red Alert, Ralph McDaniels (Video Music Box) and VP Records co-founder, Patricia Chin. VP Records (named after founders Patricia and Vincent) was founded 50 years ago as a record store in Kingston called Randy's Record Mart, and went on to record many of the DJ and Reggae legends in Jamaica.
The discussion will be followed by a presentation on Jamaican and Hip Hop sound systems from the 1970s by DJ Kool Herc and Brother Vincent. The evening concludes with a reception, where audience members can view: From Mambo to Hip Hop: The Exhibit, a photo exhibit which complements City Lore's award-winning documentary directed by Henry Chalfant, From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale; dance to the music of DJ Just Ice; and purchase West Indian fare provided by Bascom Catering with delicious roti, jerk and curry chicken, and salt fish.
