Ten days from now marks the culmination of our education as seniors. It's hard to believe that it's been four years. A year of senior design is nearly behind us. We have researched, written proposals, made designs, assembled circuts, troubleshooted, redesigned, troubleshooted some more, redesigned again, ripped our hair out, wired circuitry, troublehooted again, rewired, etc. Many people worked on projects with old friends. Some worked with new friends. Some worked with people they didn't like. Some learned teamwork, some learned how to work with other disciplines. Throughout it all, we have all learned and grown from our various experiences throughout the year. With the exception of a presentation we still have to give, our senior design projects are over. Now is the time to step back and relax and look how far we've come. Now is the time to show the public what a group of instructors, mentor, students, and sponsors can accomplish with some passion, drive, sweat, tears, dreams, and a little money.

Everything you thought you knew about Columbine is wrong. The facts, known for a long time, are finally being told by the media. A Boston College student has had his computer, phone, and other personal items confiscated by the police. The reason: he is a proficient computer user AND (oh my god) he knows how to use Linux. It turns out that Ronald Reagan was a snitch during the Red Scare.

In an official session, this fool decides to spout from the bible, using it to show that we do not need to take care of the planet because God will take care of us:

While my inclination is to apologize if I offend anyone, I am not going to. The pope is a moron. He was in Africa, where HIV/AIDS is out of control and had the audacity to say that HIV/AIDS "cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem". Pardon my french, but how the fuck are you going to go into a place like that and tell them that condoms are going to make the problem worse? That's like going to a demolition derby and telling the drivers that wearing helmets and seat belts could increase their chances of injury.

We had our final check off today. The vehicle passed all required and desired feature tests, including the waterproof test. This is probably the most important test (besides being able to climb stairs). Note: MySpace severely degraded the video quality, making it hard to see video on the LCD screen and impossible to read the GPS.

I received word yesterday morning that my grandfather passed away. He was only a month from his 80th birthday. He was a patient, gentle man. He used to take me fishing and we would hang out in the boat all day, eating and talking, and catching a few fish if we were lucky. He used to work at the Eagles in Concrete, WA and I would go with him sometimes. He would let me drink a mixture of fountain sodas and eat the little bags of Planter's peanuts. I used to have a cassette of him and my grandmother playing and singing, and I would listen to it every night when I went to bed, until the day it broke. I love you Grandpa, and I will miss you very much.
Clifford D. Mitchell, 79, Clarkston
Sunday, March 15, 2009
Clifford D. Mitchell, 79, passed away on Friday, March 13, 2009, in Clarkston, of respiratory failure. He leaves a void in the lives of all who knew him and loved him. He was known for his love of music, his love and dedication to his family, and his infinite patience. He leaves a grateful and loving family and many, many wonderful lifelong friends. He believed he would dwell with the Lord he loved.
Cliff was born April 15, 1929, in North Little Rock, Ark., to Henry Lloyd and Nannie Mitchell. Nannie died when Clifford was 4, and he and his younger sister were raised by their paternal grandparents while his father worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1940, they rejoined their father in Tacoma.
Cliff joined the U.S. Army Air Corps at 16, serving most of his time as a teacher of aerodynamics in Biloxi, Miss., before being sent to Okinawa. He was discharged in 1949. He received his diploma from Stadium High School in Tacoma through the USAAC.
Cliff was born into a musical family. He was an accomplished guitarist, vocalist, and a published songwriter for BMI. He played in various bands in Tacoma with his father as a youngster. He played several lounges in the Lewiston area in the 1950s and '60s, including a daily radio show on KRLC. He returned to the area to play several times at the Stables from 1974 to 1976. He also worked as a sewing machine salesman and repairman most of his life.
In 1962 Cliff married Sharon Wilkinson, and the couple moved to East Wenatchee. He was a Prudential insurance representative for five years before moving in 1967 to Salt Lake City, where he owned and operated three sewing machine/vacuum stores in Utah, held the wholesale franchise for New Home sewing machines for Utah and Wyoming, and promoted new talent in the music industry.
Music called him back in 1972. He and his wife left Utah to play on the road for the next seven years, home-schooling their children. His music took him to 12 states and Alaska and Canada and spanned 60 years. His love for western swing influenced every young musician he worked with, and his appreciation for it was handed down to all of his children, two of whom are accomplished musicians and songwriters.
In 1979, the family retired from traveling and settled in the Skagit Valley in Washington, first in Concrete and then in Sedro-Woolley, where Cliff was a salesman and housepainter until he retired in 1991, but continued to play music until 2001. Cliff was inducted into the Western Swing Society's prestigious Pioneer of Western Swing Hall of Fame in August 2002, an honor he accepted graciously and humbly.
The couple returned to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley in October 2002 to be nearer their grown children and their families. He loved fishing with his children and grandchildren, camping with friends and family, and jamming with old musician buddies.
Cliff was a member of the Orchards Community Church in Lewiston. He was a lifetime member of the Western Swing Society, the Old Time Fiddlers Association in Bremerton, Wash., and a member and past officer of American Legion Post 43 in Sedro Woolley.
Cliff is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shari, at the family home; and seven children: daughters Nancy Anderson of Laughlin, Nev., and Kim and Roger Hecht of Lewiston; sons Clifford Duane Mitchell Jr. of Clarkston, John and Jean Wilkinson of Genesee, Cory Wilkinson and Wes Wilkinson of Lewiston, and Jean Coltrane of Anchorage, Alaska. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy and Larry Lind of Tacoma; a brother, Jim and Lucie Mitchell of Tacoma; and brother-in-law Delbert Duppenthaler of Sedro Woolley. Cliff had 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston, with the Rev. Mark Brewster officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Orchards Community Church benevolence fund, the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter, or a charity of your choice.
