Tribal Seeds - "TRIBAL SEEDS"
(Review by Tom Orr)

I caught this San Diego-based band at a recent free outdoor concert down by the beach (always a good thing), and they had a crowd of Sunday afternoon sun worshippers, picnickers, kids, older folks and people who looked like they'd come straight from church caught up in the vibes alongside the more obvious reggae fans. Goes to show how infectious good reggae music can be. Tribal Seeds are both good and infectious, managing to be so without softening the sound or the message. True to the botanical implications of their name, they go for the roots. Lead singer Steven Rene Jacobo has a moderately Marley-ish vocal quality and an urgency that reminds me of Steel Pulse's David Hinds (now that I think of it, he sounds kind of like African reggae singer Majek Fashek as well). He's the group's lyricist also, showing via the likes of "Creator," "Rasta, Refuse It" and "Jah Stone" that he's got a lot more than earthly things on his mind. Musically, the group is tight and unified, with lead guitarist Marc Munoz tearing off some sharp solos that help give the overall sound a discernible Latino edge befitting the heritage of most of Tribal Seeds' members. Though familiar reggae themes abound, some of the songs ("Rider," "Dolls Dancing," "Dark Angel") go for a decidedly abstract feel that keeps predictability at bay and merits close listening apart from just letting the exceptional riddims (some of which bring to mind peak-era Roots Radics) carry you away. Impressive stuff, enough so that if I have to pay to see these guys next time, I gladly will.

Legends hosts San Diego reggae band
Wednesday, October 1, 2008 3:28 PM HST
"In I lost paradise you push I to vex all time; such a different state of mind; how am I to forward this vibe, yea." And "Dark Angel, descending from the sky come to darken I night, she wiped away the years I cried, which way does this angel . . . stride now, stride now . . ." are some of the lyrics from the San Diego-based reggae band, Tribal Seeds, who recently crossed the Pacific to play at Legends Bar and Grill in Kea..au this past Friday, September 26.

This, of course, was not the only stop on their Hawai'i tour. It was one of six shows that the band played across the state, starting off on Oahu, making their way to Lulu's in Kona, Legends Bar and Grill in Kea..au and then to the island of Maui for one final show.

They turned it up and rocked, Legends' full house until closing time with a tight sound that resonated through the night and kept the dance floor packed wit' dem reggae dancing feet. Keeping the rhythm of the night and writing many of the songs' instrumentation, Tony-Ray Jacobo ..board said, "I take inspiration from everything you know, everyday life, good music, I draw from you know a little bit of everything."

Tony-Ray Jacobo and his brother Steven Rene Jacobo formed the band in 2003 and picked up the rest of the band members by 2004. The other members of the band are John Wegener (bass), Tony Navarro (percussions), Carlos Verdugo (drums) and Mark Munoz (guitar).

The band has heavy musical influences from artists like Bob Marley, Steel Pulse and Midnight, and has had the good fortune to play shows with some of the reggae greats such as Matisyahu, The Wailers, Gregory Isaacs, Israel Vibrations, Elan, The Abbyssinians, Dezarie, Barrington Levy, Gentleman, Cultura Profetica, Sister Carol, Midnite, Ooklah the Moc, Common Sense, B-Side Players, Elijah Emanuel and the Revelations, Rebelution and more.

Fans of this new chart-topping band can now get down with the Tribal Seeds in the comfort of their own homes with the recent release of their self-titled, 15 song album. The album boasts roots music, with conscious lyrics, smooth hooks and a sound that is definitively, the Tribal Seeds' sound. You can grab a CD for your own by going to itunes,
CDbaby.com, Borders, or check under Tribal Seeds at myspace music where they have a list of stores around the nation to pick em' up too.

Just Joe, the newest member of the band on percussions said, "Mahalo for all the support here in the islands. I think Hawai'i has been awesome. This is my first time here, but the band has been here about five or six times you know. The whole island has a nice reggae scene, a lot of great local talent, so we just came and joined the party, and just do shows and spread reggae music you know."

Legends manager Andy Johnson welcomed the group with a smile as they packed the venue with the hometown favorite DJ Red One. "I am very, very grateful and appreciative to have people coming in here and supporting local music and supporting local business, and hands down, we wouldn't be here if it wasn't by having such a loyal clientele that keeps coming back and taking care of us here," said Johnson, explaining, "What Darren Mertz (co-founder of Legends) and I originally tried to do was to create a really good local place where everything is kind of chill, has a really good vibe and has really good local music.

"With the help of the bands that are coming in here and my staff and the locals that are coming in and supporting us has made things pretty good taking in consideration what is going on with the economy and everything right now, because it is pretty scary for everybody."

The Legends crew has been stacking up the calendar dates with more and more live music for eveyone's enjoyment. "We are going to have the band 10 Feet here, we are going to have Koa 'Uka, I am working on Ooklah the Mok, and our Halloween bash is going to be with B-97 FM hosting the Paula and John rock band.

"We are going to have a huge Halloween concert," said Johnson, reminding readers that they have live music every Wednesday thru Sunday. This Friday's event all came together by the combined efforts of the community conscious crew at both R&R Entertainment and 808 Empire who have been working so hard to constantly bring out the freshest and hottest bands around for the eager ears and dancing bodies of the Big Island and to the rest of the state.

R&R Entertainment is again teaming up with 808 Empire to bring back Hawai..i's own Iration for a concert at the University of Hawai'i Mo..okini Library on October 24, with an official after party later that night at the Emerald Orchid in Downtown Hilo.

Jason Koji, owner of 808 Empire also added, "My main goal this year is our winter party and our spring break party." He said, "I want the winter party to be the biggest party that gives away the most amount of free stuff from all the surf companies this year.

Stay posted for the winter party on the R&R Entertainment and the 808 Empire myspace websites. Mariner, Founder/Owner of R&R Entertainment has a good ear for the music and will continue to bring that fresh sound for us here on the Big Island. The bands really blow up because everyone here gives em' that chance and if they sound good, the fans here know how to respond. Mariner added, "What we do is blow up a band here on the Big Island, once they blow up here then we get them to play on Maui then we go to O..ahu and Kaua..i.

"But, they blow up from here first. Nobody knew who the band Rebelution was (for example) until they blew up here." Both Rebelution and Tribal Seeds are now up on top of the myspace reggae/rock charts. The band Tribal Seeds will be playing a show alongside of the Wailers on October 17, back in Southern California at the Warehouse in Mission Beach.

Tony-Ray Jacobo added, "After that we will be in the studio recording the new album that will hopefully be out early next year." We leave you with some lyrics by Steven Rene Jacobo from one of their hits Island Girl. "Oh girl, love you more than you know; Oh girl, you love draws I in so close; island girl, love you more than you know; No my love can't be bought nor sold."

TRIBAL SEEDS - Tribal Seeds
Label: Indie
Genre: Rock Reggae
Rating: 4.5 outta 5

Growing up in San Diego, I’ve never felt like there was a shortage of reggae or ska talent to nibble on when overcome by the rocksteady munchies.  Certainly, the D’ego has been a vortex for such music in the United States as far back as I can remember.  In spite of the broad buffet of talent that permeates our clubs and beaches, few local acts capture the roots vibe quite like Tribal Seeds.  Their new self-titled album boasts 15 tracks – every one a testament to the music’s essence: raising social conscious, government resistance, repatriation, irie life, and, of course, Raaasta-faariii.

From the revolutionary opener, "Youth Rebellion," to the album’s desperately hopeful closer, "Dark Angel," Tribal Seeds manages to take the listener on a ride through reggae history – rolling a bountiful spliff of Toots, Marley, Steele Pulse and Lee "Scratch" Perry.  Like said spliff, this is music to be shared – it’s stylistic familiarity makes it broadly digestible, and Tribal’s adept songwriting and vigorous live performance make their music utterly magnetic.
