Summer guide to the biggest live music tours in Florida
By ADRIAN RUHI, Avenue Writer
For some, summer means no school, endless hours of basking in the sun, and milking your parents for money before you go back to "adult duties" in the fall. For me, though, it means paying absurdly high prices on Ticketmaster to see some of pop music's biggest acts perform extravagant sets in not-ideal-for-live-music venues, like NBA arenas. To help you decide what to check out this summer, here are few of my picks.
Kanye West's Glow In The Dark Tour:
Along with Rihanna and hipster-hoppers Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D., Kanye attempts to deliver an arena show bigger than his ego. The show will feature live orchestration, stage and lighting design by Daft Punk's people, holograms by director Hype Williams and the wizardry of Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
Tour runs from April to June (May 5 in Tampa, May 6 in Miami).
Radiohead:
Hot off the release of the critically-acclaimed "In Rainbows," the elusive rockers take part in their first U.S. tour since 2004.
Tour runs in May and August (May 5 in West Palm Beach, May 6 in Tampa).
The Police:
If you "Can't Stand Losing" Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland, then make sure to catch them on this run. They've said it's their last tour ever.
Tour runs from May to August (May 16 in Orlando, May 17 in West Palm Beach).
Erykah Badu and The Roots:
Despite a 10-plus-year working relationship and fame for their amazing live shows, the soulstress and the legendary Philly hip-hop outfit have never toured together. Until now.
(May 20 in Boca Raton).
Stone Temple Pilots:
With Scott Weiland's getting the boot from Velvet Revolver, Stone Temple Pilots is back together for their first tour since 2002, when they originally broke up.
Tour runs from May to August (August 19 in Orlando, August 20 in Hollywood, August 22 in Tampa).
Pearl Jam:
Having not toured the U.S. since 2006, Eddie Vedder and company will play only 12 shows, all on the east coast.
(June 11 in West Palm Beach, June 12 in Tampa).

Britain's Estelle glimmers on sophomore long player
By ADRIAN RUHI, Avenue Writer
You have probably never heard of Estelle, but you will shortly.
The British singer and rapper, who is signed to John Legend's Homeschool Records, blends neo soul, hip-hop and dance music sensibilities without sacrificing her cultural roots on her sophomore album, "Shine."
Instead of pandering to the increasingly dumbed-down American hip-hop archetype, Estelle brings a refreshing take to the genre, with a distinctly British accent and colloquialism.
In fact, her guest artists are the ones that cater to the British sensibility.
"American Boy," which is currently the No. 1 song on the UK music charts, is a delicious international dance anthem in which Estelle expresses her need for an American lover, name checking American landmarks and cities. Conversely, guest Kanye West raps in a British vernacular, using the words "bloke," "wags" and "rubbish" for the first time in one of his verses.
The rest of "Shine" is equally eclectic and intriguing.
Jamaican/Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall assists on the dancehall-tinged "Magnificent," while Gnarls Barkley singer Cee-Lo performs on "Pretty Please (Love Me)," which is pure Motown soul, with cheery background vocals punctuating a snappy bass line and upbeat piano melodies.
Estelle doesn't need superstar assistance on "Shine," though.
She's equally comfortable on poppy dance songs like "Wait A Minute (Just a Touch)" and the title track as she is on personal ballads such as "More Than Friends" and "Back In Love."
All of the songs show her solid songwriting abilities too.
Combined with top-notch production, Estelle is the best UK import to hit American shores since Amy Winehouse.

Gnarls Barkley gets darker
By ADRIAN RUHI, Avenue Writer
Rushed to release several weeks early due to bootlegging, Gnarls Barkley's "The Odd Couple" is anything but rushed.
Any tinge of positivity or celebration on "St. Elsewhere" has disappeared on the duo's sophomore set. Instead, it's been replaced by introspective melodrama and paranoia carefully paired with some of the most soulful and eclectic musical backing in pop's recent memory.
Those looking for a "Crazy" rehash are in for a disappointment. Instead, vocalist Cee-Lo delves deeper into the uneasiness and angst he hinted at in Gnarls Barkley's debut, while madman producer Danger Mouse settles for slightly left-of-center soul, neglecting some of the group's previous sonic shenanigans.
This mood is most evident on "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?" - a simple and straightforward soul ballad with Cee-Lo crooning in fear of death.
Although this gloomy mood pervades through "No Time Soon," "She Knows" and "A Little Better," there is a slight sense of hope on the yearning love tune "Blind Mary," and the ode to apathy, "Whatever."
The best, though, is the chaotic single "Run (I'm a Natural Disaster)."
Over blaring organs and frantic drums, Cee-Lo sing-raps his way through what sounds like the bastard child of Outkast's "Bombs Over Baghdad," a nod to his Dungeon Family roots. Equally fantastic is the moody "Going On," a gospel song punkified by double-time snares.
"The Odd Couple" is not a "St. Elsewhere" repeat. Those looking for danceable pop tunes will probably be disappointed.
Instead, Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse have concocted a timeless record that takes soul music to a whole new universe.

More of the same from Snoop
By ADRIAN RUHI, Avenue Writer
Somehow, against the odds of the one-hit-wonder factory that dominates the current hip-hop marketplace, Snoop Dogg has pushed on through to a 16-year career. And while his lazy cohort Dr. Dre has only managed to throw us two albums in as much time, Snoop is still relevant on his ninth opus, "Ego Trippin’."
First, let’s cut to the chase. Snoop has not had a great album since his 1993 debut, "Doggystyle." His foray into No Limit Records in the late ’90s was awful, but luckily his most recent works have been of a higher caliber, if not overly bloated with tracks. "Ego Trippin’" is more of the same: several standout songs are buried in a mess of 21 tracks, with at least seven or eight being completely disposable.
What stands out most on the album is the emphasis on ’70s and ’80s R&B funk by artists like Prince and Roger Troutman, with many songs featuring synthesizers, brass arrangements and the talkbox, which makes the singer sound robotic (for the young readers, think T-Pain). The hilarious "Sexual Eruption" and a cover of The Time’s "Cool" manage to sound fresh and would fit perfectly at home at the skating rink.
"Ego Trippin’" also features some of the best G-Funk since the Death Row Records days, with "Press Play," "Neva Have 2 Worry" and "Let It Out," with Snoop’s silky-smooth flow weaving out of funky bass lines and vibrant saxophone solos.
Unfortunately, the remaining majority of the album is boring and contrived, with "Life Of Da Party," "Whateva U Do" and "Staxxx In My Jeans" rehashing the same West Coast club sound in use since the late ’90s.
Worst of all is the painfully out-of-place "My Medicine," a country duet with Snoop Dogg and Everlast paying tribute to Johnny Cash. Huh?
