This article in today's Times points to why telling one's life story is so important, something memoirits have long since discovered (here is just one more instance of art beating science to the punch):
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/22/health/psychology/22narr.html?8dpc=&_r=1&pagewanted=all
It concludes with Joan Didion: "The idea that whoever appeared onstage would play not me but a character was central to imagining how to make the narrative: I would need to see myself from outside," the writer Joan Didion has said of "The Year of Magical Thinking," her autobiographical play about mourning the death of her husband and her daughter. "I would need to locate the dissonance between the person I thought I was and the person other people saw."

Bluebeard I am sending back the key that let me into bluebeard's study; because he would make love to me I am sending back the key; in his eye's darkroom I can see my X-rayed heart, dissected body : I am sending back the key that let me into bluebeard's study. Sylvia Plath
