Like so much other vital information of recent years, this recording is finally seeing the light of day. Profanation. A memory bank of suppressed atrocities, mass deceptions and twisted histories. The mosaic contains much.

Profanation is one of Bill Laswell’s most vocal-oriented creations in years. And the voices will be heard. Fronting the core band of Laswell on bass, Brain on drums and Buckethead on guitar, are vocalists Iggy Pop, Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Killah Priest, Doctor Israel, the alarmingly inscrutable Rammellzee and Hawkman, a feverish newcomer to Laswell’s circle whose track will leave you gasping for breath and your furniture in a pieces.

Laswell conceived the album with a clear idea in mind—blend Praxis’ adventurous rock/dub/turntable foundation with the aggressive beats of drum ‘n bass. Overall, the songs inhabit tighter forms than the jagged experimentalism of previous Praxis albums. But listen closely and witness a seething disintegration as surface forms give way to elements deeper in the mix: Rammellzee, clad in a transformer costume, reading the Bible upside-down and backwards; Buckethead, setting aside his impeccable shredding, momentarily channels the raw emotionalism of Eddie Hazel; Japanese drummer XXX Yoshida (of the Ruins and Painkiller) exploding midway through the album, bringing with him the energy of his live duets with Laswell. Bernie Worrell—satisfyingly vintage; a harbinger of the future—ever sneaking off into unknown spaces in time and tone, subtly defying the fixed logic of the keyboard.

As the songs drift past, even the lyrics peel away to reveal something else. Yes, Hawkman’s words are biting and well-chosen but his vicious conviction makes them authentically so. Hear, too, the hardened but humorous Midwestern razor’s edge that is Iggy Pop’s voice—yes, he’s formed it into syllables and syntax but relish the voice itself, for that is the journey.

Not all sounds were made for the bright light of day. Not all words need reveal an immediate meaning. As with many of Laswell’s creations, Profanation rises to meet listeners at the gate but soon pulls us into a world visceral and unthinking—a place far beyond the corruption of words.

Flip the page, turn it around. Look another way; just don’t look the other way.

Greetings from UFO!

As one of our bands recently said, there's nothing better than summer touring. That came from Enter The Haggis, and we consider them pretty much experts on the subject since they log about 150 gigs each year. Well, this summer we have tons of touring artists. From festivals to club gigs, and from California to New York, there's no excuse to not see at least one UFO artist play this summer.

NEWS AND NOTES

United For Opportunity would like to welcome Zach Deputy and Fred to the roster.

ARTIST NEWS

Zach Deputy

Sunshine

ZACH DEPUTY
Sunshine

BUY

South Carolina's Zach Deputy has spent the past several years earning tremendous cred on the jam band circuit. The songwriter, guitarist and soulful singer is a master of the live looping technique. He creates a "one man band" feel by laying down live tracks and looping them over one another to become his own accompaniment.

The sound, influenced by family heritage in Puerto Rico and St. Croix, is essentially roots rock, but in this case the roots are in soul, calypso and dancehall, underpinned by driving hip-hop, rock steady, Motown and Stax backbeats. Zach's dance music for the soul is a one-man live musical experience with no pre-recorded tracks, samples or any of that trickery.

He's touring through the rest of the year in support of his new album, Sunshine, released July 28 on United For Opportunity.

GUGGENHEIM GROTTO

Kevin and Mick of The Guggenheim Grotto spent June and July covering a great amount of ground stateside on their second U.S. tour of the year. This time around the band brought friend and fellow musician Tadhg Cooke along as an opener and travel partner as they traversed the cities and countryside from Denver to NYC. The tour began with a recorded performance at the nationally recognized radio variety show E-Town, taped at The Boulder Theater. Kevin and Mick then made their way East to play outdoor summer concerts and intimate cub gigs for fans. The boys landed July dates playing direct support for Ani DiFranco - an opportunity that put them in front much larger audiences and a completely new set of future fans to win over.

Just days after returning home, a jet lagged but happy Kevin May commented on their latest adventures in the U.S.

"The last two months we spent touring the states brought some wonderful new experiences for us," he said. "Our first gig of the tour in Boulder, Colorado was special not just for being invited onto Etown but also for getting the opportunity to play alongside Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane. The finale of the show was a Guggenheim, Kaukonen and The Etones cover of Come Together by the Beatles."

"Another highlight of our tour was getting the opportunity to open for four of Ani DiFranco's dates at the end of July. My particular high point on these dates was in the 4000 plus capacity venue of Artpark in Lewiston NY, where myself and Mick performed an especially good rendition of The Universe is Laughing - just two vocals and a Ukulele. It was magic."

Back at home in Dublin, Kevin and Mick are beginning to pen their next album. The band will be back for another tour in the U.S. this fall.

Catch The Guggenheim Grotto when the duo is back in the U.S.:

ENTER THE HAGGIS
Gutter Anthems

BUY

For Enter The Haggis, summer means festival season. The band is touring throughout the summer hitting annual Celtic festivals and other outdoor concerts, with some club shows in between.

According to Brian Buchanan, there's nothing better than summer touring. "Getting to play outdoors for much bigger crowds than we typically do in clubs is a real rush," he said. "It's especially exciting to see how our new songs are connecting. There's nothing like a couple thousand voices singing your lyrics back at you to get the adrenaline pumping, and I think it makes us better players."

The band recently performed at the Vancouver Island Music Fest over three days in Vancouver Island, BC. While there they got to hang out with famous country singer Del McCoury.

This summer ETH is holding a contest via social networking sites that allows fans a chance to win a new iPod Touch loaded with the band's music. The band is challenging Haggis Heads to come up with the best slogan that captures its energy and attitude. The winning slogan will be considered for use on an official Enter The Haggis t-shirt. Marc Copely Harp & Plow

MARC COPELY
Harp & Plow

BUY

Marc Copely is currently on tour playing guitar in Billy Squier's band. But this Fall he'll be back to solo touring in support of the release of his long-anticipated new record, Harp & Plow.

Recorded over just a couple weeks at Applehead Studios in Woodstock, NY with Marc's co-producer Joe Magistro, the record is meant to capture Marc in his raw and almost live form with songs done in just a few takes and minimal fixes.

From dark and sexy blues guitar to more dreamy and ethereal sounds, Harp & Plow showcases Copely's chops while he draws from a wealth of influences. Instrumentally based in slide guitar, Copely balances traditional slide with lap steel and ties a myriad of styles together through compelling songwriting and a whole lot of soul. The record holds a feel of warmth and awakening, of raw emotion that's been held in for far too long.
