Hi Myspace. It's been a while, if we exclude my way-too-long rambling about how fuckin' whacked out Alejandro Jodorowsky's adaptation of Dune would've been. Did it make you go out and rent El Topo or the Holy Mountain? Did you all go out and order, borrow, steal, and read any comics he's written like Technopriests or the Meta-Barons? Did you hit up Wikipedia for more information on Jodorowsky himself, reading about how he performs THERAPEUTIC PSYCHOMAGIC and stuff? Probably not. And I don't blame you. Anyways, let's run through some stuff real quickly, shall we? I'm slowly moving things into a new apartment in which I will be living alongside the great CJ. We have a kickass living room with all things good, and my room is going to be pretty awesome as well when I get it all finished up. I won't be living there just yet. I need to stay in Bristol to keep working at the storage buildings until I can wrangle a job in Johnson City, or until the new semester starts, whichever comes first. Sadly, it'll probably be the latter, because our economy is teh s_uxx0rz. Kat has me reading the Dark Tower series. The Gunslinger was awesome, the Drawing of the Three was...meh, but the Waste Lands is the one I'm on right now and it's pretty sweet. Once I finish it, only four more books to go! Oh, and I bought Guillermo del Toro's first novel, the Strain, co-written with Chuck Hogan, who I've never heard of. It's a vampire novel, but it's del Toro trying to bring about a return of the vampires of folklore, the plague-ridden Nosferatu-esque motherfuckers that don't fucking sparkle like pussies and would sooner rip your throat out than swoon you with poetry about immortality or something. There is no romance here, just a lot of blood being drained. I'm not even 100 pages into it, but I love it and so far whole-heartedly recommend it, if only for the fact that it's also a sort of modernization of Dracula. I mean, the airplane? PERFECT. The lead vampire is apparently 8 feet tall, too. That's pretty awesome. So is his origin story from the very first chapter of the thing. I saw Transformers 2. It has a lot of problems, but it's still an incredible movie, a sensory overload and hot damn I want an action figure of Ravage. I played and beat Mother 3, making it the only non-Pokémon traditional JRPG I've ever actually FINISHED. You have no idea how happy this accomplishment makes me. I can now mark it off of my list of Things To Do Before I Die. I might review it for the amazing Hindsight Alloys. I should. ROB-CON was Saturday. Kat got more comics than I did, which is just a bit baffling. We each bought an issue of Heavy Metal, and her issue had more tits, robots, and cool shit than mine. Bah. Pepper is going deaf in her old age. Poor girl. It kind of bugs me. I'm spending the weekend in Johnson City because my parents leave tomorrow morning for Maryland for a family reunion. HUZZAH. The director of the Machine Girl is back with a film called RoboGeisha. It looks awful. I can't wait. I...I can't think of anything else. Therefore, I must retreat back into the wild. AWAY! [Brett]

Just a warning, I'm about to go off on a weird tangent here. So. Alejandro Jodorowsky. Ever heard of him? Possibly not, I have yet to meet anyone who has, but then, I try not to mention him in public so often. I mean sure, I've finally met a few people who've seen Tetsuo the Iron Man, and there are plenty of David Lynch lovers out there, but Jodorowsky is pretty obscure, despite his two most popular films, El Topo (surrealistic western madness) and the the Holy Mountain (psychadelic quest for enlightenment), were distributed by the Beatles manager Allen Klein, with the latter of the two being completely financed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. But then, he's only done a few other films along with those, none of which are nearly as notable, and finding any of it on DVD is damn near impossible. I got lucky in getting my copy of El Topo at Target. I guess it also lends to his obscurity that, despite having written quite a ton of comicbooks after deciding that film wasn't good enough, English translations are hard to come by. I myself am lucky to have the first volume of Technopriests (incredibly fucked up and mythical sci fi), the second volume of Son of the Gun (starring gunslinger-with-a-tail Juan Solo!), and an old 1980's issue of Heavy Metal with a strip written by him and illustrated by Moebius. So don't feel bad if you haven't heard of him. Hell, I feel weird bringing up my knowledge of the man, for fear of getting looked at funny or for people thinking I'm some pretentious twat. Because yeah, his films are weird, surreal, arthouse things that are equal parts pretentious, whimsical, bizarre, and horrifying. And his comics just kind of crank it all up, though I admit he gets to work with some INSANE illustrators. Anyways, here we go, I'm getting to the meat and potatoes of this thing. When I read about how David Lynch was picked to direct Dune (and also the Elephant Man before that) based on Eraserhead, I get confused. How could you watch Eraserhead and think, "man, this guy should TOTALLY direct a sci fi movie!" Hell, how can you watch Eraserhead and be capable of rational thought at all for at least 3 days afterwards? Wait, I may've just answered my own question. Anyway, David Lynch directed Dune in the 80's, and it was an odd beast. But that's not the point. The point is, Lynch was the final guy in a string of directors (including Ridley Scott) who stepped up to direct Dune, and he's the only one to succeed in what is truly a case of what-the-fuckery on a cosmic scale. The first guy they wanted to direct the film, though? Jodorowsky. Why? I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE. Looking into it, Jodorowsky's vision of Dune was practically doomed from the start. He, much like Lynch, never read the book at first, so when he set forth in writing the 14-hour-long script, he took MASSIVE artistic liberties and went way off-track with the weirdness, wanting shit like making Duke Leto a eunuch and wanting the spice to be some sort of spongey substance. This would've been hardly anything like the novel, so it's for the best it never happened. And yet, at the same time, look at the conceptual artists who were involved and the work they produced for Jodorowsky before the thing got aborted: Chris Foss!Jean "Moebius" Giraud!H.R. motherfucking Giger!Other interesting things to note are that the soundtrack would've been done entirely by Pink Floyd and Salvador "melting clocks" Dali as the Emperor! Granted, this was the 70's, and special effects technology could not possibly live up to the concept art done by these fine artists, but still, can you imagine what kind of movie this would have been? Sure, it would not have been at all what any Dune fan would have wanted, but it would've been INCREDIBLE. Incredible, and fucked up. After watching El Topo again the other night and watching most of Jodorowsky's first film, Fando Y Lis, without English subtitles, and after seeing the crap he's pulled off in comics, I just find myself sitting, wondering, just what kind of movie he would've made if he had the abilities to make it. Maybe you're reading this thinking that I'm insane and retarded for it, but Jodorowsky is unrivaled when it comes to such a strange fucking imagination. I mean hell, the guy's a philosopher who does therapeutic psychomagic. Say that out loud: THERAPEUTIC PSYCHOMAGIC. He's one of the most interesting minds I've encountered. Apparently, a lot of his ideas for the film, once production was scrapped, went into his sci fi comics, which can be seen, as my volume of Technopriests has ornithopters and two or three fat characters floating around with suspensors like our fair Baron, and I'd like to get my hands on more of his work, but still... Admit it, it would've been one HELL of a movie. [Brett]

This year and next year have been great for the Wii, with lots of good games coming out and people everywhere saying "oh now I can dust off my Wii and actually play the thing!" ...I kind of hate those people, seeing as how I love my Wii and play it all the damn time. Anyways, E3 is going on and today was Nintendo's press conference, with announcements for some awesome stuff: Top of the list that has me hot and bothered is this: .. I just finished Metroid Zero Mission today, and when David called to tell me about this, I got giddy. Plus, it's being developed by Team Ninja, the Ninja Gaiden/Dead Or Alive team? I have never seen Samus being so brutal in a game before... .. Super Mario Galaxy was the first Wii game I bought, and oh it was such a fun, worthy purchase. It was simply an amazing game, and look! It's Yoshi! .. The first Sin and Punishment is my favorite N64/Virtual Console game, made by Treasure, who are among my favorite developers for making other badass games like Ikaruga and Gunstar Heroes. Though the two characters looking like they're 10 years old is kind of lame, the action looks just as awesome. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I just came [Brett]

The first thing I've ever ordered off of Amazon came in today, much to my surprise, a copy of SHARKNIFE, volume 1, by Corey Lewis, who also designed the badass ZOMBI t-shirt that I also own.
Sharknife, though. I've gotten maybe a 4th of the way through it, even though it's a pretty slim little book that could probably be read in an hour with no problem. But I've been wanting to really sink my teeth into one of Corey's books for a while now. His art is insane! Bright colors, thick linework, crazy poses with exaggerated proportions and foreshortening. He wears his influences with pride, way too much anime and old-school videogames. He pulls the best of those influences out and puts them on the page, not trying to be another idiot deviantART kid doing Naruto fanart or something, but really making something energetic, explosive, something that CRACKLES. His artwork is not boring at all.
...Er. Anyways.
That was supposed to be a lead-in to where at this point I would ramble about the comic I'm working on. The thumbnailing is all done, shitty as they are, and I've been working on character designs for the past week. Well, not working too hard, admittedly, because my tendency currently is to sit down, draw a few sketches of their faces and such, then get pissed and walk off to play Henry Hatsworth, but I just beat that earlier today, so yeah.
The thing is, I'm torn. I find myself wanting to NOT be another generic anime-style kid whose work plagues deviantART. At the same time, though, trying to draw the characters in proper proportions, trying to make them pretty realistic, is just awful at the same time. They come across as just...boring, bland, uninteresting. So I'm struggling to find a style, a way to draw these characters and the settings they interact in, without getting bored or pissed off, and in a way where people will look at it and not see some generic crap, y'know?
It's frustrating. So I'm looking at Corey's stuff, along with the Brazilian twins Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá, both of whom illustrated the excellent CASANOVA (Bá also illustrates UMBRELLA ACADEMY). Paul Pope too.
(you should be clicking these links, these guys are great artists who encapsulate everything I love about comics)
I'm getting other ideas for these characters, too. This comic would be like part 1 of 6 in a trade, yes? But I've gotta draw this crap first. Arg.
So there we go. Rant out of the way. I'm going to find food and possibly watch Tokyo Gore Police. It might be my next HINDSIGHT ALLOYS review.

Oh wow. Pardon the dust, I've been neglecting Myspace. My new regular haunt seems to have become Facebook, and of course my LiveJournal has been seeing some action as well.
I dunno why. It happens. So, some bits and bobs then:
ART:
CONFRONTATION. Watercolor painting that served as my final project for Visual Thinking.
Prints: EPIC STRUGGLE. Mantis versus Jellyfish! LEECH KING. Inspired by an episode of the X-Files and the Creature From the Black Lagoon. DAMNATION. Done in the manner of Gustav Dore. SUMMONING. Also known as "Brett's totally trying to rip off Mike Mignola."
VIDEO:
And I love this fucking song:
----
Also I recently finished a script for a 22-page comic called WARREN LUSK: THE BEST JOB EVER. It has sex and violence in it. I finished the thumbnails, which are shit but who cares, I'm designing the characters, and here, have a page of script to get an idea of what I'm doing:
PAGE 8 (SIX PANELS) PANEL 1: WARREN tries to sit up, having a hard time, freaking out over the appearance of another woman. 1- WARREN: I KNEW IT! SCAM! PANEL 2: JORDAN gives ENGEL an exhausted look as she’s about to head out the door. 2- JORDAN: YOU WERE WATCHING US. OF COURSE. 3- ENGEL: IT’S MY JOB. 4- JORDAN: SURE. I HAVE TO GO. PANEL 3: WARREN tries to point accusingly at ENGEL, who looks at him with disdain, hands on her hips. 5- ENGEL: HI, I’M ENGEL. 6- WARREN: YOU WERE RECORDING US FOR THE INTERNET! 7- ENGEL: I WISH. I WAS HIRED BY GOLD AND SILVER TO LOOK AFTER YOU, WARREN. PANEL 4: WARREN collapses back onto the bed as ENGEL steps back into the bathroom to find her clothes. 8- WARREN: YOU WATCHED US. YOU WERE MASTU-RRRRAHHH… PANEL 5: ENGEL pokes her head out of the bathroom. 9- ENGEL: THE PROCESS OF ENCODING INFORMATION ONTO SOMETHING SO MICROSCOPIC AND SENSITIVE IS STILL KIND OF NEW. 10- ENGEL: YOU’RE SUFFERING FROM SOME NASTY SIDE EFFECTS. PANEL 6: WARREN, lying on the bed, groaning in pain. 11- WARREN: WHYYYYYYYYYYYY --- And that's all. Semester's over, trying to find an apartment, not sure if I'll be keeping my job at the storage buildings or not, Kat cut her hair, I'm taking Photography next semester, and David Lynch is the nicest person on Twitter. So how's life? [Brett]

I dunno. Random song line from an At the Drive-In song.
So, the important thing here is that I wrote a full review on Watchmen for Hindsight Alloys. And so did two of the other guys, and each review is quite different, so you should give them all a look: http://rvwbox.blogspot.com/

Secondly, everyone should be very proud of me because I went into the comicbook store on Saturday with CJ and ONLY SPENT FIVE DOLLARS. That NEVER happens. I normally spend at least 20. All I got was an old issue of New Mutants, illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz (the sole reason I bought it) and HOLY SHIT ISSUE THREE OF ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VERSUS HULK.
...Yeah! Because, you know, it only took them FOUR FUCKING YEARS to release the third issue. The first two came out, what, my senior year of high school? It's a very fine example of how entertaining comicbooks should be, and also has Hulk ripping Wolverine in half and throwing his legs 4 miles up a mountain. And Hulk chilling out with at least two dozen hot, half-naked women. No, seriously. It's fun stuff. I'm glad it's finally picking back up again.
I have finished book 4 of the Walking Dead and I am PISSED because I have been left HANGING from a CLIFF. A VERY TALL CLIFF. I mean, shit. I also finished some other comics and will be considering doing a writeup on them for Hindsight Alloys.

http://rvwbox.blogspot.com/
AND MADWORLD COMES OUT THIS WEEK MOTHERFUCKERS.
...That is all. My lunch break is almost done and I must go back to work.

So. Kat, CJ, Mithra and I went to the midnight premiere of Watchmen. Kat and I, being horrifically nerdy, both wore our Watchmen shirts. We didn't take pictures to commemorate this, but we should have.
Anyways. I have to get this off my chest:
I walked out of the theater feeling lost and disappointed.
The entire time I was watching, there was this...nagging feeling in the back of my head. Something about the movie just didn't feel right, it was...off.
It took most of the day today thinking about it, but yeah...I think I got it.
The movie just doesn't FEEL real. Don't get me wrong, it's very very faithful to the graphic novel, almost to a fault. Can a movie be TOO faithful to its source material? Possibly. But it just doesn't feel real. I mean, it never had me at the edge of my seat, I never really got excited during any particular scenes, I just sat there and watched it.
One reason I love the graphic novel is because of its art and how...how anti-stylish it is. You don't have loud colors and dynamic poses, over-the-top action sequences or any of that, the graphic novel went AGAINST what a superhero comic is supposed to be, and the art shows that. It simply illustrates the story and makes no real attempts at showing off, unless you want to count the Fearful Symmetry issue. And in that sense, the art is perfect because it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Trust me, I have read that thing THREE times and have studied its pages VERY carefully.
And then you have Zack Snyder using his slow motion tricks again (albeit not NEARLY as horribly as in 300) and way too much unnecessary gore.
Not too mention the terrible pacing. But we'll blame that on the studios, perhaps the director's cut DVD will fix that.
And while we're at it, can we change the music, please? I am not convinced that Tyler Bates is a good composer.
Veidt was...off. Laurie contributed almost nothing. The guy who played Doctor Manhattan got on my nerves. Hollis Mason had ONE SCENE.
However, a few bits aside, they got Dan Dreiburg, my favorite character, pretty damn well. And Rorschach was damn near perfect, even though he didn't get to jump out of Moloch's fridge, which is just criminal. Seeing him and/or Dan onscreen were the only moments where I got excited.
So. It doesn't outright SUCK. I might see it again. But I'm not sure about buying it on DVD when it comes out.
Really, it just makes me want to watch Hellboy II again, because THAT is my favorite comicbook movie. But...I left it at the dorm. Fuck.
[Brett]

Dammit. I seem to have somehow contracted AJ's Space Bird Cholera. Minus the feverish alien invasion dreams. And, well, the fever in general. Sore throat, coughing, nasty green mucus. What the fuck man.
I have determined that my second favorite Radiohead song is I Might Be Wrong. The first being Paranoid Android, of course, and now I'm considering my top 5 favorites. And then top 5 Muse, Mastodon, Coheed & Cambria, the Mars Volta, and Nick Cave songs. Stop me.
My Visual Thinking teacher is now in the habit of calling me Mr. Cook. He used my storyboards as an example when demonstrating how to shade in Photoshop in grayscale. I don't like it much, especially since the act of turning all the linework pure black kind of ruins the line quality. Or at least it feels like it does. I'd rather just have a paintbrush, water, and ink, you know?
Beat God of War tonight for Kat, started God of War II. She's enjoying them immensely and this makes me a happy, proud boyfriend.
Oh hey Watchmen comes out next week! PLEASE DON'T SUCK. Need to see about acquiring premiere tickets I suppose.
To entertain myself while Kat was getting her hair done at the mall the other day, I bought Retro Game Challenge for the DS. It is amazing. The shmup game, Star Prince, is addicting and awesome, and the whole thing is just so damn charming. Possible Hindsight Alloys review? Oh you bet.
Need to finish reading Hellspawn: The Ashley Wood Collection. Need to get book 3 of the Walking Dead back to CJ and get book 4 from him. Need to read those other comics that I got for Christmas and completely forgot about. You know, Sky Doll and volume 3 of Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse. Also Aetheric Mechanics.
Printmaking critique tomorrow. Joy. Also movie class. Need to write that journal entry on Water. Err, the movie, Water. It's...meh. And 3 more blind contour self portraits for 3D Design before that class starts tomorrow. Damn.
I should go to bed now.

It only took a really long time, weeks, even, but I finally finished writing my review for Kingdom Hospital and have just uploaded it to Hindsight Alloys for your reading pleasure! You can read it by clicking RIGHT HERE. HERE YOU GO BUDDY.Yes, a crazy surreal horror TV miniseries by Stephen King. Good stuff. My roommate was playing Super Mario Bros. 3 when I came in today. That brought me much joy, and it was relaxing, hearing all those old, familiar sound effects and music. Then he got Game Over and is now watching Big Momma's House instead. Arg.The Bell's Palsy is going away! Hooray!I still have a number of other things to do. Work on that copper plate for Printmaking, finish my storyboards for Visual Thinking, tonight is the movie class (god I hope that whatever it is we're going to watch doesn't outright SUCK), and Kat has much to do too. Lately our free time has been spent with her watching me play God of War, which is incredibly entertaining for me to play through again and for her to watch. Yes, the trailer for God of War III is to blame.I also still REALLY want to watch Tokyo Gore Police, but have no clue when I'll have the chance. Damn.Uh. That's it. Gonna read some now.[Brett]

Okay, so, I know I don't have a PS3, but I KNOW I will eventually get one. And well, until I see what Team ICO's up to next, this is reason number 1:
NEW GOD OF WAR III TRAILER IS BLOODY AND EPIC AND AWESOME. AND IT TAKES PLACE ON THE BACK OF A TITAN.
On the subject of violence, guess what comes out next month on the Wii?
YEAH BABY MADWORLD. This is totally going to be a Day 1 purchase for me. Totally.
So anyways. I don't think the last blog worked, but in case you missed by bulletins or the stuff I posted on Facebook, I has a thing now called Bell's palsy. It's um, the right half of my face is largely paralyzed. It's weird. Kind of amusing, but very annoying too, especially since I have to tape my eye down at night. I did a lousy video about it:
Yes. It's had me in a kind of grumpy/gloomy mood to a certain extent lately, but I have things to keep my spirits up. Tomorrow we go to Asheville for Valentine's Day and Ray's birthday, and I can't wait to see Kat's reaction to what I bought her. And hey, I got to hang out with David today! He showed me the amazing Disaster: Day of Crisis.
Sunday's gonna suck, though. Lots of work to do then. -_- Arg.
Um, anyways, that's it. Ultraviolent videogames are awesome, being Two Face's lame henchman isn't. The Raconteurs are awesome too.

...I seem to actually like My Chemical Romance now all of a sudden. And well, this is to blame:
My Chemical Romance - Desolation Row
Yeah. Kat and I sat down and watched it, and we were both like, "wow, that was...shockingly good." And then, out of boredom while waiting for her to get out of class the next day, I started browsing their discography. I realized that the overplayed radio stuff that we all hate are actually some of their weakest songs, while the actual good stuff goes unnoticed. What the hell.
So yeah. I just downloaded a mess of My Chemical Romance songs. Damn.
And well, we all know that Gerard Way is the writer of the exceptionally awesome comic, the Umbrella Academy, right? If you didn't, then I'm not doing a good job of being an influence on you children, am I? Because that comic fucking rocks your face off.
I bought 4 DVDs this week: Repo! The Genetic Opera, the Messenger, Equilibrium, and Tokyo Gore Police. I cannot wait to watch Tokyo Gore Police, and I think I need to get Kat and CJ in on it too. We must all watch it together!
Also, CJ and I went shopping today for Valentines Day stuff. He was assisting me in my quest to find something specific for Kat, yes. And I was successful!
I also found, for 99 cents, a VHS copy of Might Morphin' Power Rangers: I'm Dreaming of a White Ranger. YES. The Christmas episode of the Power Rangers! ULTIMATE WIN!!
And, well, that's about it.

Guys! GUYS! It's Christian Bale's birthday! I JUST NOW FOUND OUT.
I must do something to celebrate! Probably take my clothes off and kill a prostitute by dropping a chainsaw on her, I suppose. I DID wear my American Psycho shirt today, I just didn't realize...Damn.
Anyways! I have nothing else to report. Here's a video of Neil Gaiman talking about buttons, because Coraline comes out on February 6th:

Arg. Busy busy busy. This was supposed to be the first full week of class, except for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the snow canceling classes the next day. Well, not all classes, just the earlier ones, but our teacher never showed up for the afternoon class that I am in (and Ray too), so, woo, two days of no classes.
First impressions of each class are as such, in no real order:
Visual Thinking: Spent the entire class yesterday drawing lines, circles, and then boxes in single-point perspective. The repetition is killer. And the teacher is...Interesting. But no one in that class seems very likeable. Seems like the kind of class I might be sleepwalking through that class... Special Topics In Film: We watched Lost in Translation. Great movie, but the teacher's voice grates on my nerves the discussion afterwards was annoying, but that might've been partially because I wanted to get out of there fast and find Kat. It's hard to tell. The list of movies we'll watch all semester is...interesting. I really don't want Intro to Printmaking: I love the teacher. He's a total nerd, mentioning Frank Frezetta as one of his influences, making a side comment about noises in his attic leading him to believe there are ghosts or squirrels taking residence, and telling us NOT to do prints involving dragons, unicorns, elves, Elvis, or faeries. Or other such things. He seems to think kind of how I do. Here's what my first print will be, if all goes well:
That's right, a mantis fighting off jellyfish. Where is this battle taking place? I have no fucking clue and I don't care. Which is to say, probably on Pluto.
My second idea was this, but I think I'll save it for later:
Stop looking at me like that.
Also, when a girl showed him her print idea, a cute little image of a bunch of baby birds in a coffee mug with the mother perched on the rim of the mug, the teacher commented, "I was planning a print of a mother bird eating her children. But we won't talk about that." Anyways! Moving on: History of Graphic Design: Lots of people from Figure Drawing in there, except not a single one of them is Cody or Kat, and therefore I do not know them and do not care. However, Ray is in there, so huzzah! The teacher for it is great too, and amuses me with his tendency to occasionally blatantly bullshit things. Good times. 3D Design: I'm one of only three guys in there, not counting the teacher, who is also a young guy. Our first project is to make the perfect cube out of illustration board. Great.
And beyond that, Kat and I finished watching the entirety of Kingdom Hospital, we watched Repo! The Genetic Opera at CJ's, experienced the thrill of having my car slip around on ice, wandered the library (she found a Joel Peter Witkin book somehow, which is amazing), bought groceries, visited her mother, sister, and dog, bought our books, and other fun things like spending 20 minutes one morning looking for a damned parking spot. Fun times.
Oh, also, viral video of Dr. Manhattan for Watchmen! I think my favorite bit is the clip from a Hanna-Barbera style cartoon show:
Now, I've things to do. Finished reading Stray Toasters today and the ending left me a bit...miffed. CJ has loaned me book 2 of the Walking Dead in his mission to completely prepare me for the inevitible oncoming zombie apocalypse, and I can't wait to dive into that. And Kat has been muttering about making me read the entirety of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Eek.
I'll probably disappear again for about a week. Be good.
