Nearly 30,000 new flu cases confirmed

Nearly 30,000 patients infected with the H1N1, a subtype of influenza A, were newly confirmed last week, with the nation's first round of vaccinations scheduled to start today.
A 14-year-old boy with asthma, who lived in Gyeonggi Province, died yesterday, bringing the nation's death toll from the disease to 21, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Investigations were also underway into the additional deaths of two disabled children, who died yesterday, possibly from their flu infections at a hospital in Daejeon, health officials said.
According to the weekly influenza surveillance report issued yesterday, the number of influenza-like illness patients was 9.27 per 1,000 inpatients last week, up 62.9 percent from the previous week.

"The flu virus is rapidly regaining strength here. All patients with high fever and respiratory problems are recommended to be administered with antiviral drugs, even though they are not included in high risk groups," said Choi Hee-ju, director of health policy at the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs.
"There will be no problem in securing enough stockpiles of antiviral drugs. The government plans to have Tamiflu for 20 percent of the total population available within the year," Choi added.
Mass infections at schools also continued to increase last week, with a total of 870 new cases, according to the weekly report.
"As the vaccine takes effect two weeks after injection, young students who will get vaccinated in mid-November should pay greater attention to hygiene until December," Choi said.
Despite the declaration of a national emergency by the U.S. government on Saturday, health officials said that the nation is not considering raising its alert level or closing schools.
In a meeting with senior presidential secretaries yesterday, President Lee Myung-bak also asked for all-out efforts against the spread of the disease, turning down the proposal that he and other close aides be inoculated first against the flu virus.
"The Presidential Office limits access of ordinary people. As all visitors are examined before entry, it seems safer than any other place. It will be appropriate for people at higher risk to be vaccinated first," President Lee was quoted as saying by presidential spokesperson Park Sun-kyu.

Disgraced Cloning Scientist Convicted!

A South Korean court Monday convicted disgraced cloning scientist Hwang Woo-suk in connection with his stem-cell research, according to The Associated Press.

The Seoul Central District Court found the 56-year-old scientist guilty at a hearing.
Hwang has been charged with accepting funds under false pretenses, embezzling and illegally buying human eggs for his research.

Hwang will be sentenced at a later hearing. Prosecutors have demanded a four-year prison term for him.

Hwang's purported breakthroughs in cloning stem cells had raised hopes for developing cures to diseases such as Alzheimer's, but they were deemed bogus in late 2005 and Hwang was put on trial in 2006.

Kim Yu-Na back on Top of World Rankings

South Korean figure skating queen Kim Yu-na has retaken her position atop the world rankings after her win at the Trophee Bompard, the first Grand Prix event of the season, this past weekend.

The reigning world champion now has 3,960 rankings points, moving her ahead of previous world No. 1 Carolina Kostner of Italy (3,861 points) as of Monday (KST).

Kim Yu-na moved to the top of the rankings in March after winning the world championships. She had accumulated 4,652 points, slightly more than Kostner's 4,635.

Skaters earn points on results from the current season and the previous two seasons, however, points earned two seasons ago are valued at only 70 percent.

At the start of the new season, the points Kim earned with a third-place finish at the world championships, a victory in the Grand Prix Final, and first- and third-place finishes at Grand Prix events during the 2006-2007 season, caused her to drop behind Kostner.

Yes Kim Yu-Na!! ;)

Jang Ki-ha and the Faces

One of the most highly regarded indie bands in Korea, Jang Ki-ha and the Faces have successfully reintroduced elements of old-fashioned Korean folk music into the country..s mainstream pop culture.

Firmly rooted in a burgeoning indie music scene centered on Hongdae, the band not only came up with great songs and lyrics but also invented their own unique style. The happy-go-lucky persona of the band and its iconic twins are the epitome of free mind and unadorned spirit of youth, so much so that they have made appearances on national television - a rare phenomenon for a Korean indie band.

King’s Dance

Louis XIV, the King of France, was famously known for his love of dance. (Hmm, that rhymes.) He even practiced three hours daily preparing to play the role of Apollo, giving him the nickname ..Sun King... However, King Yeonsan of Joseon Dynasty had just as much love for dancing a full 150 years before King Louis XIV. He was especially interested in a dance called Cheoyongmu, a dance used in ceremonial and religious rites. It has been recorded that the king often staged the dance for days and nights in the Royal Palace, simply for his pleasure.
