Laneway festival! "St Jerome's provides a unique atmosphere and sound environment, with inventive re-imaginings of typically disused urban spaces." - Wikipedia Well it was actually in the uni SA courtyard which I think is technically not a laneway it was still a pretty awesome festival. Firstly I saw the Holidays. A sydney band with everything it takes to make it big. The looks, the well crafted pop songs and catchy lyrics. The fact that they appear to like the Libertines is evened out by their healthy use of angular guitar fuzz. Next was Bridezilla. They are visually striking and their music is clever. 4 girls and 1 guy utilise guitars, saxaphone and violin to create dense and claustrophobic music. Lady Strangelove played a face melting set of experimental, psychedelic rock. Stars make delicate electronic pop songs. Delightfully cute vocals about the ennui and angst of everyday life. However the music was not amplified enough and very difficult to appreciate the subtleties of the music. note the reflection of the keyboard in one eye and the crowd in the other! Broken Social Scene were very "broken Social Scene-y" they produced their signature ambient soundscapes. Sometimes beautiful sometime exhilaratingly always pleasant. However, with most of Broken Social Scene's females either going solo or forming equally successful side projects it only leaves the boys as the core members. This means their is a lot less of their signiture ethereal female vocals contributing to compelling and inventive indie pop. Various member of Star appeared on stage spontaneously Feist appeared to for 4/7 (shoreline) which was perfection. Although somewhat bittersweet that the whole performance was not up to this standard. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! were better than I expected. When listening to their second album their were many moments when I was offended by the mediocrity of it, However, their were few moments like this during their tight performance. I love Feist. Her music is beautiful, she is effortlessly chic and is very charismatic. 1234 for was the highlight in an excellent performance. The lack of mushaboom was puzzling though. Goyte was weird. I have noticed that Australians have a tendency to really like eccentric musicians. From what i heard it appeared to be a sound collage of pop songs, frantic drumming and a self indulgent ballad on piano. The Presets were an excellent way to close the night. I was a bit ambivalent about them because i felt I was a little over them. However they had a sort of "nite version" to their normal songs. The started off with a metallic voice repeating the chorus "machine, machine" for down down down. they also just mashed themselves into Daft Punk's Da Funk which was pretty awesome. Comments and kudos?

Gameboy/Gamegirl, Scientists of Modern Music, Theatre of Disco
What better way to start the festival season than a free gig at the swanky soco cargo bar at the garden of unearthly delights with some of Australia's wackiest electronic acts.
First up was Theatre of Disco apparently an infamous sydney group. I somehow was misinformed and had heard that they had fat suits. After you expect fat suits everything is a disappointment.

they had some pretty cool cowbell filled electro jams vaguely resembling the Chemical Brothers at their most exotic

The vocalist sounded like a mixture of Muse and a chipmunk version of Vanilla Ice, but in a good way!

2 Many Djs have a lot to answer for. They didn't invent the mashup but they sure made it chic. They are also in part responsible for these guys deciding that it would be a good idea to rap over daft punk, dance in unison to salt n pepa's push it, cover Rick Ross's Hustlin' and have a song called sweaty wet/dirty damp. And we should be thank 2 many Djs cause these guys are the pinnacle of awesome.

Probably one of the funnest act of the year!

Its best not to ask about this

With remixes of indie rock songs being so ubiquitous, some even more popular than the original, its only a matter of time before bands decide to bypass the rock aspect totally. Instead just use sampled drums, synthesizers and vocoder. Their raw energy has to be admirable. for most of the performance they were just a blur of motion.

I loved some of their songs which kinda had a doctor who theme feel.

They also had matching outfits.

They got a pretty fickle ADD crowd dancing which was no mean feet.

Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!, Reptiles, Swords 17/08/07All Made of Rubies was meant to be supporting but unfortunately they cancelled. This was unfortunate as I didn't see them last weekend as I thought I was going to see them this weekend.
However, one uber eclectic band is replaced by another equally intriguing one. Swords: two bass guitars, one drum, no vocals. A bit pretentious I know. I have mixed feelings about these guys. They are really compelling and their music is pretty different. However, the lack of vocals makes them a bit hypnotic after a while.

I'm thinking of getting new glasses. For some reason i feel compelled to go for the Jarvis Cocker look like this guy.

Next up was Reptiles from Melbourne. My friend Kate's boyfriend, Luca, is the drummer. They have a grunge aesthetic.

The headline band for the night needs little introduction. If you have been out to a gig in the last year there is a 90 percent chance that you have caught one of Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!'s superb preformances. Out of the hundred billion times I have seen them this was by far their best performance.

special mention should go to the fact that they used a projector which is always awesome. In this case they had all sorts of old school video games. It was particularly awesome when they had one of those scrolling shooter games going on.

they had also kidnapped some girl to sing with them on stage. apparently she also sings on the album

the fact that they actually used Rocket Bar's excellent , and underused stage lights, was refreshing and i finally have good pictures there aswell.

Signature double drumming.

rocking out on the synthesizer. no easy task.

They ended with a Moloko cover that I was the only one in the crowd that was not familliar with it.
Comments please, I am desperate for kudos they sustain my ego.

Lost Valentinos, Teenagersintokyo, Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! 10/08/07Missed lady strangelove who played around 7 30. what? thats crazy I know. Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! Seen them a few hundred times now, every time they are just as good and ever changing. by hundred I mean tenth time. Next up was teenagersintokyo. A hip little band from Sydney. I really liked them. Kinda have a sound that resembles an 4/5 girls version of the Rapture( notice how I steared clear from the obvious comparisions to you say party! we say die! , pony up!, new young pony club, le tigre, cansei de ser sexy, young and restless and yeah yeah yeahs)

And then the headliners, the lost valentinos. you would think that with midnight juggernauts and cut copy selling out for week day performances you would have expected a full house, however, this was not the case. Unfortunately Adelaide does not have a big valentinos following. Perhaps the name change confused people. Judging from this performance I still feel they are on the verge of being massive. Unfortunately due to some sound problems the first song was incoherent. this really sucked as it was their song "sell yourself" which was my favourite. layered vitnage synthesizers shredding guitars with more effects pedals than you can count! I think I'm a little out of practice with the photography. Comments?

Red Paintings and Battle CircusSunday night 08/07/07First up was New Zealands battle city who really effectively used their projector to have a very atmospheric show of experiment music. this was the only member of the band i was able to get a good picture of because of the darkness. Then the red paintings came on. starting the show off with howling wolf calls, judging from the wolf ladies alone clearly the audience was in for an unforgetable night. The music itself was an incredible blend of heavy industrial stength noise mixed with abstract samples and a string section. oh i forgot to mention they dress up (cross dress) as geishas and have samurai face paints! And more smoke than i have ever seen in such a small venue. Behold the chipmunk hypnotism Death to aliens! Mid air jump Costume change also the wolves got body painted and several canvases were painted on while they played, wish i got a better picture when it was completed comments and kudos, please?
