Laneway festival!
"St Jerome's provides a unique atmosphere and sound environment, with inventive re-imaginings of typically disused urban spaces." - Wikipedia
Well it was actually in the uni SA courtyard which I think is technically not a laneway it was still a pretty awesome festival.

Firstly I saw the Holidays. A sydney band with everything it takes to make it big. The looks, the well crafted pop songs and catchy lyrics. The fact that they appear to like the Libertines is evened out by their healthy use of angular guitar fuzz.

P1200158.JPG

Next was Bridezilla. They are visually striking and their music is clever. 4 girls and 1 guy utilise guitars, saxaphone and violin to create dense and claustrophobic music.

Stars make delicate electronic pop songs. Delightfully cute vocals about the ennui and angst of everyday life. However the music was not amplified enough and very difficult to appreciate the subtleties of the music.

Broken Social Scene were very "broken Social Scene-y" they produced their signature ambient soundscapes. Sometimes beautiful sometime exhilaratingly always pleasant. However, with most of Broken Social Scene's females either going solo or forming equally successful side projects it only leaves the boys as the core members. This means their is a lot less of their signiture ethereal female vocals contributing to compelling and inventive indie pop.

Goyte was weird. I have noticed that Australians have a tendency to really like eccentric musicians. From what i heard it appeared to be a sound collage of pop songs, frantic drumming and a self indulgent ballad on piano.

The Presets were an excellent way to close the night. I was a bit ambivalent about them because i felt I was a little over them. However they had a sort of "nite version" to their normal songs. The started off with a metallic voice repeating the chorus "machine, machine" for down down down. they also just mashed themselves into Daft Punk's Da Funk which was pretty awesome.

Gameboy/Gamegirl, Scientists of Modern Music, Theatre of Disco

What better way to start the festival season than a free gig at the swanky soco cargo bar at the garden of unearthly delights with some of Australia's wackiest electronic acts.

First up was Theatre of Disco apparently an infamous sydney group. I somehow was misinformed and had heard that they had fat suits. After you expect fat suits everything is a disappointment.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

they had some pretty cool cowbell filled electro jams vaguely resembling the Chemical Brothers at their most exotic

2 Many Djs have a lot to answer for. They didn't invent the mashup but they sure made it chic. They are also in part responsible for these guys deciding that it would be a good idea to rap over daft punk, dance in unison to salt n pepa's push it, cover Rick Ross's Hustlin' and have a song called sweaty wet/dirty damp. And we should be thank 2 many Djs cause these guys are the pinnacle of awesome.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

With remixes of indie rock songs being so ubiquitous, some even more popular than the original, its only a matter of time before bands decide to bypass the rock aspect totally. Instead just use sampled drums, synthesizers and vocoder. Their raw energy has to be admirable. for most of the performance they were just a blur of motion.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I loved some of their songs which kinda had a doctor who theme feel.

Big Day Out 01/02/08

Big Day Out

It's pretty exciting.

Firstly started with The Swiss for their distinct brand of funky nouveau disco. Sounding like Kraftwerk fronted by Giorgio Moroder playing the soundtrack to Dirty Harry at the Hacienda.

I was a little dissapointed with the lack of a massive video screen.

and then a little bit of rocket bar in the bowler room.

British India were pretty good. they know how to do good guitar pop.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I have never seen such controlled chaos. It was a wonderous thing

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Montreal's Arcade Fire were impressive. I loved the vast array of instruments from the bullhorn to a minature organ. Rebellion lies was one of the highlights of Big Day Out.

Next was UNKLE the only real dissapointment of big day out. Unfortunately James Lavell has made a career of "borrowing"(aka collaborating) others talents. Unfortunately these people are willing to hang with him for maybe a couple of days but not tour with him. Im reasonable I didnt expect Thom Yorke, Josh Homme or Jarvis Cocker. However, I dont think it would have been unreasonable for him to actually atleast attempt to recreate some of the songs from his amazing Psyence Fiction. I had this image in my head of Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truth Speaker rapping over the the sci fi themed track drums of glory with a video of a space ship being destroyed, but it was not to be. There was too much smoke aswell.

P1190301.JPG

Next was bjork. I only stayed until my favourite song , Who is it. I loved her horn section and their dinotopia-esque costumes. Also the use of the lemur touchscreen midi controller( the same used by Daft Punk in their pyramid) and her massive cauldron shaped midi control was particlarly intriguing. Interestingly enough the lemur is only about 5000 dollars. However the other controller is a one of a kind.

P1190320.JPG

LCD Soundsystem were the second highlight for me.They Played all the classic singles from both their albums like Daft Punk is playing at my house and Us v Them.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Nancy Whang

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

James Murphy

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The highlight for me was when they played tribulation, movement and (my personal favourite) yeah.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Pat Mahoney

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

They take their cowbells very seriously.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

And then came the mind bending laser spectacle. which made up for the initial lack of uber video screen.

Daft Punk, Cut Copy, The Presets

So I went to Melbourne along with a large portion of adelaide to see daft punk. Suffice to say it was probably the best concert i have ever been to, but more on that later.

I was worried about my camera being confiscate due to its size, however security seemed to be more concerned with various members of the audience passing out from the heat.

first up was muscles. I didnt take picture of him for 2 reasons:

1 I detest him

2 I was worried they might confiscate my camera.

some of his music was a little fun, but in general i really do not think he deserves all the hype. that song where he goes awoo in the begining made me want to destroy ears so that i would never have to endure that sort of agony again. the only thing that kept me going through out his 45 minute set was the hope of hearing my other favourite bands aswell as daft punk

I was worried about my camera being confiscate due to its size, however security seemed to be more concerned with various members of the audience passing out from the heat.

Cut Copy played a really tight set. I love the sound of their new work. I eagerly await the next time they tour in support of their upcoming album. Unfortunately, it was a bit lackluster because of the distance i was away from the stage.

Presets were up next. Similarly they played a competent set, but it had a similar detached feel. They sort of had a "nite version" thing going with their some of their songs sounding slightly different than i remember from BDO last year. Their new stuff sounds cool aswell.

Young and Restless, Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! and Skeletons 05/09/07

anyway i already wrote a review for fasterlouder.com.au which isnt up yet so this will mostly be pictures with witty comments.

First up was skeletons comprising of several members, well two really but thats like 40 percent. They played some wicked avant guarde jazz post punk funk. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

comparisions between them and no wave bands such as Liquid Liquid, A Certain Ratio and This Heat aswell as contemporaries !!! are unavoidable.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

also they had two drummers.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

and even 2 cowbells!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And a saxaphone

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

and a synthesizer

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Winston approved band.

Next was Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! fro for the 12th time.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

their isnt much to say about them that i havent said before. oh they had a funny hat aswell much hilarity followed.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Young and Restless played around 12ish. I would say that the intesity of this crowd compared to last time I saw them at Rocket bar was several orders of magnitude. to some extent i felt it was a tad much being scratched knocked onto the stage several times and once to the floor.

Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!, Reptiles, Swords 17/08/07

All Made of Rubies was meant to be supporting but unfortunately they cancelled. This was unfortunate as I didn't see them last weekend as I thought I was going to see them this weekend.

However, one uber eclectic band is replaced by another equally intriguing one. Swords: two bass guitars, one drum, no vocals. A bit pretentious I know. I have mixed feelings about these guys. They are really compelling and their music is pretty different. However, the lack of vocals makes them a bit hypnotic after a while.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I'm thinking of getting new glasses. For some reason i feel compelled to go for the Jarvis Cocker look like this guy.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Next up was Reptiles from Melbourne. My friend Kate's boyfriend, Luca, is the drummer. They have a grunge aesthetic.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The headline band for the night needs little introduction. If you have been out to a gig in the last year there is a 90 percent chance that you have caught one of Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!'s superb preformances. Out of the hundred billion times I have seen them this was by far their best performance.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

special mention should go to the fact that they used a projector which is always awesome. In this case they had all sorts of old school video games. It was particularly awesome when they had one of those scrolling shooter games going on.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

they had also kidnapped some girl to sing with them on stage. apparently she also sings on the album

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

the fact that they actually used Rocket Bar's excellent , and underused stage lights, was refreshing and i finally have good pictures there aswell.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Signature double drumming.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

rocking out on the synthesizer. no easy task.

They ended with a Moloko cover that I was the only one in the crowd that was not familliar with it.

Missed lady strangelove who played around 7 30. what? thats crazy I know.

Next up was teenagersintokyo. A hip little band from Sydney. I really liked them. Kinda have a sound that resembles an 4/5 girls version of the Rapture( notice how I steared clear from the obvious comparisions to you say party! we say die! , pony up!, new young pony club, le tigre, cansei de ser sexy, young and restless and yeah yeah yeahs)

And then the headliners, the lost valentinos. you would think that with midnight juggernauts and cut copy selling out for week day performances you would have expected a full house, however, this was not the case. Unfortunately Adelaide does not have a big valentinos following. Perhaps the name change confused people. Judging from this performance I still feel they are on the verge of being massive.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Unfortunately due to some sound problems the first song was incoherent. this really sucked as it was their song "sell yourself" which was my favourite.

Red Paintings and Battle Circus

Sunday night 08/07/07First up was New Zealands battle city who really effectively used their projector to have a very atmospheric show of experiment music.

this was the only member of the band i was able to get a good picture of because of the darkness.

Then the red paintings came on. starting the show off with howling wolf calls, judging from the wolf ladies alone clearly the audience was in for an unforgetable night.

The music itself was an incredible blend of heavy industrial stength noise mixed with abstract samples and a string section.

oh i forgot to mention they dress up (cross dress) as geishas and have samurai face paints!

And more smoke than i have ever seen in such a small venue.

Behold the chipmunk

hypnotism

Death to aliens!

Mid air jump

Costume change

also the wolves got body painted and several canvases were painted on while they played, wish i got a better picture when it was completed

comments and kudos, please?
