It's official: "Heretic Rapture" to be released on the 29th of June 2009!







Ascendance Records can announce that the debut album of Witchbreed, the female-fronted Portuguese metal band formed by bassist Ares (ex-MOONSPELL, DEEPSKIN) and guitarist Dikk (ex-DEEPSKIN), will be released on 29th June 2009.


Entitled "Heretic Rapture", the album was produced, mixed and mastered by Waldemar Sorychta (LACUNA COIL, THE GATHERING, SAMAEL, TIAMAT, MOONSPELL).

Witchbreed covers Iron Maiden   “Children of the Damned” unreleased studio version unleashed!

On the verge of releasing our debut "Heretic Rapture" we decided to offer you all a petite hors d'oeuvre in the shape of our own version of Iron Maiden's classic "Children of the Damned".
As you might know we are finally done with the "Heretic Rapture" recordings and because we couldn't  keep ourselves busy enough while we wait for the final product we decided to re-work on our first ever cover for a truly Metal classic, and actually is quite interesting how it sums up a big part of what "Heretic Rapture" sounds like, although this song is not included on the album nor it was recorded during the album sessions we recorded it by ourselves and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.



Hails to the Number of the Beast for the Heretic Rapture is about to reveal itself!

Formed in 2006 by ex-Moonspell João Pedro"Ares" in the aftermath of his own previous DeepSkin project, and again with guitarist Dikk, Witchbreed are the new great hope of Portuguese Metal with female vocals, even more now they signed with the English Ascendance Records (the new label funded by Lee Barret, home for bands like Flowing Tears).Witchbreed plays Dark Metal and it's main focus is in Ruby's vocals, with a line up including ex-Shadowsphere Filipe Sousa on guitars and with drummer(ex-Mons Lunae) Tiago Lopes. In 2001 the "Descending Fires" demo Ep introduced the sound of the band, increased the exposure of the name Witchbreed and, the number of live appearances and as last result got the band a deal with Ascendance Records.  The debut album is called "Heretic Rapture" and was produced by Waldemar"MoonSpell" Sorychta and is expected to be out in 2009. For our surprise German Metal Hammer made a review of our old Demo Descending Fires and  one of two songs released online in 2007, Brotherhood of fang & claw.     Here's the image of the article for those who can read German , for those who can't we asked our good friends  to translate it in English.

Hordes Of the dark, watch out! The former bass-player of MOONSPELL João"Ares" Pedro is in a new band called WITCHBREED. The debut-CD is already recorded and will be released in the comming months. As a foretaste check out the 2007 four-track-demo "Descending Fires" in the web. WITCHBREED plays a Dark Metal-style with a lightly progressive touch and female vocals. It isn't cliched, no worries - because singer Ruby Roque is more of a rocker than an elf! In addition to that her melodies never slip into a catchy way. As a  recommendation listen to the opener "Brotherhood Of Fang And Claw", which you can find on the album, too.

Wizards & Witches of the underworld, unite!....


Don't get scared, this is not a twisted Marxist take over but a recap of my latest blog entries so all of you can get an idea of what's happening with our debut record "Heretic Rapture".  Yes we are done with it, finally!


After the Xmas nonsense hysteria and New Year’s Eve crazy partying (always!), we the Witchbreed can officially announce that we have finished the 'Heretic Rapture' mammoth task which lasted nothing less than 8 months....8 months of pain, sacrifice, frustration, more pain and also lots of fun and self realisation...There's no need to scalp the reasons behind why we took so much time to record the 13 songs but basically it had to do with us pushing the limits, both human and technical (gear related) of the whole production.  We are currently doing mix fixes, the main job is being done in .Germany and we are exchanging opinions with Waldemar Sorychta by email, it's just a matter of days until we have it back in our hands fully mixed and mastered.  Included in "Heretic Rapture" there's a very last minute piece that will work as the album's Outro named 'Heretica', it's a very special piece of music with a different lyric approach, Ruby vocals will surprise everyone, we were definitely overwhelmed ourselves, I like to think of it as a gift to all friends and Witchbreed fans that have always revealed interest in our Portuguese language.  So far 'Heretic Rapture' sounds massively heavy, epic and dark with a strong feeling of 'Atlantic Tragedy', like a labyrinth of small details, little things happening here and there that makes it a magical journey through 13 tales of (in)human desolation and anger, maybe a huge metaphor for our personal life and the world around us.  It's not political at all but more of a sociological and behavioural perspective on human relations, a scream of rebellion against all forms of oppression.  This was indeed a very challenging debut to write and record but we of the Witchbreed have managed to stay united and focused on the creative sphere, hence we hope our suffering will please your soul...and flesh.  ....


While the album is being mixed in Germany and we are back at work with our dear video Director Pedro "Coppola" Psi on a few video teasers and developing more video content to promote "Heretic Rapture", Ruby is enjoying some well deserved "home sweet home" vacations in her own Madeira Island and before she returns we the guys in the band, the heavy infantry, already started rehearsing the songs and getting our claws cleaned, we are becoming tighter by the day and ready for the upcoming stage assaults!  The artwork looks fantastic; we gathered the art of Nat Jones(www.myspace.com/dreadnat), the graphic skills of our drummer Hollow and the sublime eye of our photographer Carlos (www.myspace.com/mojosinpt) and created an interesting iconoclastic image that truly represents the music and words of the album.

As soon as our dear label exec decide on a precise release date we will launch the video teasers online, reveal the artwork, and start booking live dates.....

Heretic Rapture – Pre-production sessions

Salvé all the Witchbreed!

 I'll do my best to let you all know what has been going on the Witchbreed camp in the last weeks...

Let me tell you that for all the Witchbreed this was a first time experience and everybody was excited to meet  the legendary Waldemar Sorychta, personally it was my first time 13 years later I have meet the man himself, this time I welcomed him in my own place and Witchbreed's lair for the next days.  Who would say?

April 22, Ruby and I picked up Waldemar Sorychta at Lisbon's Airport, at 12am, half hour later we were back in the studio and after the usual social and business protocolia we immediately started working on the first song, EXILED…which we did in record time with inspiring results.  As soon as Hollow and Filipe joined us we had a late night band rehearsal and we performed some brand new songs for Waldemar, face to face!!   Can you imagine the state of anxiety in the room?  After all we have never played these new born creations before for anyone, we knew this was our moment of truth and this is what we have been preparing ourselves for.  By the time we finished our rehearsal set we were even more nervous to listen what Waldemar had to say about our performance and songs…We had literally crushed the man with our abusive db level and Ruby's unique vocal output, but as a true professional Waldemar was prepared with his own pair of earplugs, we can't confirm it but we are sure they must have been some glorious BVB Dortmund official merchandise ear plugs!!!  13 years later closing the day with the encouraging and complementing words from Waldemar Sorychta itself was the best reward we could have got, no more words, no more tears ;) All the Witchbreed were left with a huge confidence smile, and his own power of inner strength was the necessary moral boost to confirm our thirst for triumph, after this first exhausting day we all headed home and rested our tired bones until the next morning…

All the following days were spent in a relaxed group environment with great creative flow.  The results have been nothing but unexpected in some songs and fantastic to say the least in other songs, everyday's  work was mixed with some of the finest Damaia's home like cosine, courtesy of Musgo Verde, a lot of drummer jokes and Portugal's unique red wine ;)   We had been working so hard that we actually finished all we had planned 3 days before scheduled, we were all amazed by the productivity of just four days of unstoppable musical rampage and took a deserved break on Saturday night, a night of velvet like temperature, the kind of pre-summer night only a city like Lisboa can offer, add a modest but genuine Portuguese dinner with more red wine from Alentejo and the right  scenario was set for certain members of Witchbreed that got themselves shamefully drunk in the streets of Bairro Alto, the perfect ending for a Lusitanian odyssey of blood and pride!

Sunday, the morning after…Actually around 3pm we decided to spend the day in the beautiful beach of Magoito, enjoying the beautiful sea from the local bar esplanade, some chose the traditional snails for a snack…Both Waldemar and Ruby refused to try it out, but hey more left for the brave ones ;)  Monday we were left to finish some of the over dubbing and editing in the studio as extras,  while Waldemar took the day off for sightseeing and a solitary swim at the beach of Cascais, typically he returned red as a lobster!!  Tuesday we gathered in Medusa Lab Studios for a final listening on all the songs, the glorious and accomplished smiles in everybody's faces was the sign of a painful but decided path we have chosen ourselves…The farewell dinner took place watching the champion's league semi finals around another delicious meal accompanied by even more red wine…We called it a day at my place with a lot of old school histories, more jokes, Tiago's mom delicious pudding and more red wine, lots and lots of red wine… Next morning it was time to leave; I took Waldemar to the airport and went back to the studio to start the new stage of recording rounds…After all this was just the fucking pre-production!!!

Witchbreed have given the following statement:

"We are proud to announce Witchbreed will officially begin the work for our debut album on 22nd April. Witchbreed will enter MedusaLab Studios in Portugal with legendary producer Waldemar Sorychta (Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Samael, Tiamat, MoonSpell) for nine intense days of pre-production followed by full recordings during May and June and finally mixing and mastering back in Germany by Waldemar Sorychta himself in July. If all goes according to plan Ascendance Records will unleash our debut album this Autumn.

"We couldn't feel more confident and flattered for our collaboration with Waldemar, it took us all our blood and sweat to get him to work with us but as we felt he was the right man for the job we fought it to the end and always believed our music perfectly fitted his knowledge and renowned producer skills. We are still in awe and we would like to show our biggest appreciation for Mr. Lee Barrett and Sir Sam Grant of Ascendance Records for making this possible, without their strong belief in Witchbreed's music and understanding we couldn't have made it."

The title of Witchbreed's debut will be "Heretic Rapture" and the tracks are given as follows, the final order to be decided.
