This course is taught in 3 parts:

Part 1: Covers setting up a session properly in Pro Tools, elements of a soundtrack, and the order of the post-production process.
Part 2: How to create a major motion picture sound, canned vs. original design, intro to Audiosuite and RTAS plugins, defining space with ambiences, the subjective power and impact of sound with picture.
Part 3: The Final Mix. Mixing the major elements, mastering tools such as limiters and compressors, industry standard levels for various playback environments, export and delivery of final elements for picture integration.
Taught by Kadet Kuhne.

Introduction to Sound & Recording

This course covers the basic physics of sound, signal flow, gain structure and an introduction to the use of the technology in recording and the production of audio. Taught by Terri Winston.

This course describes the different types of microphones used in audio, how they work, what makes them sound different and includes demonstrations and comparisons. Pre- Requisite: Intro to Sound & Recording or Equivalent. Taught by Terri Winston.

Introduction to Digital Audio & Computer Recording
Course meets BOTH Tues. March 3rd, 7 - 10 pm AND Sun. March 8th, 10 am - 4 pm

This course introduces the theory and principles of digital recording, different types of audio interfaces, software and digital audio workstations, digital audio editing and an introduction to Digidesign Pro Tools. Pre-Requisite: Intro to Sound & Recording or Equivalent. Taught by Dana Jae.

Basic Audio Wiring & Soldering
Sat. March 21st 10 am - 4 pm

This course focuses on proper soldering techniques for connections and repairs. Students will build their own microphone cable and also learn about different types of cables, connections and jacks and how they are wired. The types of tools required will also be covered. All the necessary tools and materials are provided and students will leave with a high quality, microphone cable they constructed themselves.  Taught by Terri Winston.

Workshops taught by:

Terri Winston, Founder and Executive Director of Women's Audio Mission
Terri Winston's love for music and the recording arts spans 20 years as a songwriter, composer, recording engineer, and producer. Winston was signed as a recording artist, engineer and producer by Polygram and BMG subsidiaries, and has shared the stage with such acts as P.J. Harvey, Pixies, Throwing Muses, Flaming Lips, Fugazi, Cake, and Third Eye Blind. She has collaborated with Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group and Greg Hawkes of The Cars and worked as a recording artist and producer for MainMan whose roster also included David Bowie, John Mellencamp, Lou Reed, & Iggy Pop. Winston has composed and produced theme music for KRON-TV's "First Cut" series, Banana Republic and for various films that have shown on BRAVO's Independent Film Channel, French Television's Cine Cinemas and major festivals all over the world. She is a founding member of the seminal San Francisco band Her Majesty the Baby, a two-time National Lilith Fair Tour finalist, has received numerous awards including an ASCAP songwriting award, Boston Music Award and Bay Area Music Award nominations, is a voting member of the National Academy of the Recording Arts and Sciences and is active in the Producers and Engineers wing. Winston has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.

Dana Jae, Instructor, Digital Audio and Live Sound Reinforcement
Dana is a live sound engineer with over 15 years experience in FOH live sound engineering. She has toured throughout the US. and Europe with Blame Sally, Medicine, Swervedriver, Wild Mango, and The Miss Alans and has ran a live sound production company for 12 years. Dana currently teaches Basic Audio Production at City College of San Francisco and Introduction to Audio at Art Institute of California - San Francisco.

All Women's Audio Mission workshops are taught by women for women and girls only.

The Audio Engineering Society is having their 125th AES Convention from October 3rd-5th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

AES has arranged for WAM members to get free VIP Exhibits Only Badges, and all you have to do is fill out the online form! The sooner you sign up, the sooner they'll mail it to you. But if you wait too long, they may not have enough time to mail it and you'll be stuck waiting in the mile-long registration/will call line at the conference!
