The first time I really absorbed the concept of famine, I was a teenager, just. I was struck by the emaciated babies, some merely weeks old, too weak to move their flailing limbs. Their mothers' rendered paralysed by the lack of food and stalked by the greed of death, held their babies close. Their facial expressions were largely blank, as they stared into the lens of the camera, except for the bemused gaze of unfamiliarity for the folk reporting their grief to the rest of the world. I was overwhelmed by the sadness in their eyes. There was a collective air of detachment to the young lives depleting so rapidly before their eyes. Too weak to feel emotion,  survival instincts looked to have possessed them. Resigned to their fate by the ensuing stench of death.

It touched me, deeply. It was at that point, I decided that my goal would be to go to Africa and help them to help themselves and improve their quality of life. The inevitable education system took over and due to my own insecurities I progressed no further to my goal. The intent was, and has always been, there, it was the action which escaped me. What could I do to help? I didn't really know...

It saddens me deeply to see, 20 years later, that these problems still exist and are accompanied by many more. I get frustrated wondering how poorer countries can still be crippled by starvation and genocide in this day and age?

Finally I have decided to take action. I have matured, my priorities have changed and my outlook on life has been embraced by one of spirituality. A frustrated, passive conformity has given way to a determined sense of responsibility...and in that respect I choose to offer my contribution as a fellow human being, an inhabitant of the same earth and as an equal.

That's what the company WONFIFTY.COM

  is all about.....
