Similes are the bane of everything. Like or as to compare one thing with another feels to make the words that they try to define more cryptic. Similes can make the reader become lost in the abstract comparison between two different things creating confusion at best and chaos at worst.

Similes are also cheap and easy. One simile is easy to write. It is easy to make a whole paragraph fit the simile so the writer feels to be smart, but let us be honest that simile's are an easy way out of actually showing and not telling.

Narratives do use similes more than other writings, so avoid the narrative if possible. But if the narrative is unavoidable then just avoid using similes for the sake of literature.
