It Has Been A Long Time Betweens Newsletters & Blogs!

Well I has been way too

long and I have been very

busy over the past year.

Don't ask me what, I can't

remember, I just know

the days fly by. Last year

it was high gas prices, this

 year it is unemployment

and depression. No I'm

not depressed, or maybe I

am, but the the Country is

 as in great depression.

They just don't want to

call it that for some

reason. What about all

the money given to the

BANKS. Give me a

break, who came up with

that idea. I had a e-mail a

 while back and I'm going

to add it to the bottom of

this blog. Okay this is

going to be short, but stay

 turned for a real

Newsletter in the next few

days.

Working Cowboy Newsletter
February 2008

Well it's been awhile since I put out a Newsletter. Everything has been pretty hectic, but what else is new.

There are quite a few things coming up that I thought it was time to get the news out.

NATIONAL COWBOY MUSEUM RESTAURANT SET TO HOST VALENTINE'S DINNER DANCE

Dinner guests can enjoy their reserved table for the entire evening and view the Museum galleries, including the Museum's latest exhibitions The Rodeo Photography of Louise Serpa; Real Western Wear: Beaded Gauntlets from the William P. Healey Collection; and Stomp Dance and Stickball: Southeastern Imagery from the Silberman Collection. Popular radio personality Ronnie Kaye will provide recorded dance music in the events center.
"This Valentine's Dinner Dance is popular with our restaurant regulars and Museum members, and each year attracts new guests," said Mary Beth Hardy, Dining on Persimmon Hill owner. "A mix of couples, friends, small groups and families find this a wonderful way to connect with each other for Valentine's Day."
The buffet will include crunchy romaine salad, creamy waldorf salad, mixed greens with strawberries and oranges, carrot relish, broccoli salad, bean salad and marinated vegetable medley, along with marinated beef with tarragon glaze, roasted pork loin with peach salsa and honey pecan chicken. Lynda Haller retired from the Museum in December and we will miss her being there, but now she can enjoy the events instead of working all of them. They gave her a really great retirement party and presented her with a Wrangler for all the work she'd done the last 13 years. We were happy to have been invited and had a great time.
The Western Heritage Awards are coming up April 12th. One of our favorite people Robert Fuller is being inducted and Denny Miller is set to be a presenter. Both were in the series Wagon Train. Dean Smith will once again be a presenter at the awards.
The 11th they have the Jingle Jangle Mixer which is a great time. If you haven't made it to Oklahoma City to the Museum for any of their events try to make it this year.
You can find more information on The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum website.  www.nationalcowboymuseum.org

Ra's Corner:
we had a great time at Campfire Tails at the Fort Worth Stock Show.
We also went to the Rodeo with friends this year and had a great time. Other than that we have been staying pretty close to home. Gas is too high to go too far and who knows what the weather will be doing tomorrow. But I have found it doesn't matter where you live the weather is always unpredictable.
I don't know about anyone else but I am really tired of all the politics' for the upcoming election. Do you realize it doesn't matter who the President is if we don't make our voices heard by the Senators, Congressmen and Women. I don't care what party you belong to, it's time to speak up and tell the hill to stop acting like a bunch of spoiled children and get their act together. They work for us, the people not for their own agenda. I think they have forgotten that part and need to be reminded or voted out of office next election. Everyone is talking about Health Care but didn't we hear that same spiel a few years back? How are they going to provide health care everyone can afford when the insurance companies control what we pay? If they make a law that everyone has to get health care insurance, how many of us will have to break that law because we still can't afford to pay the premiums? So that's my rant for the moment.
Hope everyone has a Happy Valentine's Day and your dreams come true.

Charles Williams, Executive Vice President shares his comments:

"Let me add my welcome to the Twelfth Annual Will Rogers Awards for
Outstanding Achievement in the Advancement of Contemporary Western Skills. There somebody ought to say the full title at least once. Before we get to the next items on the schedule, the honoring of the Cowboy Poets, please allow me to take a minute for a personal note.
After a dozen very exciting years, I am retiring as Executive Vice President
of The Academy of Western Artists to devote more time to the Will Rogers
Medallion Awards and other personal endeavors. It has been an exhilarating experience, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I would like to take this occasion to thank Bobby for the opportunity, the artists and performers I've met for your friendship and support, both for me and for AWA, and the many, many members of this wonderful community we know as the Cowboy Heritage Movement for the chance to know you and insome
small way contribute to the movement. Thank you very much.

Cowboy Poetry is the spiritual heart of the Western Heritage movement. Its
practitioners have provided the words for the music, the inspiration for the
images, the connection to past and the link to the future. In a very
practical sense, they were the spark that brought the current movement to life.
When several poets got together some 23 years ago in Elko to hold the first
Annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering, they hoped small, dreamed big, and achieved greatness. The movement they started not only tied together the elements we are gathered here tonight to honor, but gave them refreshed vigor, renewed creativity and a rebirth of public awareness.

Our Award for Male Poet of the Year goes to one of those pioneering poets.
This Nevada buckaroo was a ranch manager in 1984 when those poets drifted in to Elko for what they thought would be a pretty good party for the weekend–
Elko being a place you really have to be wanting to get to get there. Since
then, Waddie Mitchell has become one of the more famous cowboy poets reciting today. He has appeared on numerous TV shows, although he turned down his first invite to appear on the Tonight Show because it was calving season, and he had no idea who this Johnny Carson was. He has toured internationally and hit most of the big Gatherings. Waddie was recorded several albums and written a few books. In 1994, he helped form the Working Ranch Cowboy Association with a mission of creating scholarships and crisis funds for working cowboys
and their families. He has remained accessible and has encouraged many
starting cowboy poets, including the one currently behind this mike. Waddie is on tour and can not be here tonight to personally accept this Award, but he has designated one of his personal friends and fellow poets, Mr. Lanny Joe
Burnett to rep him.

The Female Poet of the Year grew up on the flat plains of Eastern Colorado
while her family tried to farm during the drought years. They all pitched in
and persevered, and eventually started ranching. The ranch was successful,
and despite earning regular income in education, Jane and her husband Dick
stayed a part of the ranch operation. From this rich trove of personal
experience, this sense of place and a feeling of security and stability from being connected to the land, and filtered through a well honed, talented grasp of the English language and poetic usage, she has crafted memorable stories of unique yet shared experiences of Western Women. While she has now retired from ranching, the drive to write and recite poetry remains strong. This is coupled with a compelling stage presence and a mastery of oral presentation. She has recently written a Medallion Award winning book entitled " Turning To Face The Wind" and followed with an outstanding CD of the same name. It is with a great deal of pride that I present the Female Poet of the Year, Jane Morton.

Humor is God's gift to humankind. We tell stories and laugh to connect with
each other, to salve over the aches and pains, to prove we are still alive,
but mostly because it's just downright good fun. Humor comes in many forms. Skinny Rowland, for whom this Award is named, performed at Cowboy Poetry Gatherings large and small, never recited a poem of more than a few lines, but was one of the most popular performers to come out of Montana because he was always full of dead pan one liners which cracked up many an audience. This year's winner is a talented musician, a gifted actress, a champion yodeler, one of those musicians who can play anything with strings, and, as if that wasn't enough, a downright beautiful girl. All of that pales, however, beside her talent for making people laugh. From Alberta, Canada, by way of Grinder's Switch, allow me to introduce this year's Humorist of the Year, Miss "Tammy Pearl" Gislason.

Making an authentic Cowboy Poetry Album is a daunting task. First, of
coarse, you need good poetry. Much of the enjoyment of recited poetry depends on visual clues from the performer, and the performer depends on feedback and energy from the audience. There's always the question of music – do you add it, and if so, how much? And if you use it, how do you make it blend in? On top of that, you need to have enough good stuff to hold a listener's attention for roughly an hour. Ed Brown and Bryan J. Smith are a couple of Canadian cowpokes. Ed's been a bronc rider, a trapper, and a commercial fisherman. He is an artist, a musician and a songwriter. BJ has been a Mountie, a horse trainer, and a guide. He and his wife manage a bed and breakfast for people and horses traveling through Alberta and he is an outstanding cowboy poet. Together they have produced one of the most outstanding cowboy poetry albums that it's my pleasure to hear. They have produced an album that makes you laugh, think, and reflect, that is filled with great poetry, songs and guitar music – and on top of that, has bagpipe music in it! Ladies and gentlemen, one of the creators behind the Cowboy Poetry Album of the Year entitled "A Cowboy Collaboration", Mr. Bryan J. Smith.

This has been a vintage year for Cowboy Poetry books. To pick one single
book out of all those outstanding books, any one of which was well deserving of the Buck Ramsey Award, was a most difficult task. However, we had to do it, and in the end, we choose a book that reflects the best of the traditional cowboy ways with a recognition that even will all the changes, the modern cowboy still carries on the legacy. 'The Campfire Ain't Quite Out" is both the title of the book and an affirmation that not only are there still real cowboys, but as long as their are cows, there always will be. The author is a cowboy poet out of Riverton, Wyoming. He has taken a curious path to become one of his childhood heroes, a cowboy. He left Colorado and went East – to Dartmouth, no less – and became a medical doctor. He hotfooted it back as soon as he could, and has treated all sorts of cowboys with medicine for the body and for the heart. It is with a great deal of pride that I present the author of the Buck Ramsey Cowboy Poetry Book of the Year," The Campfire Ain't Quite Out", Mr. Kent Stockton.

The Will Rogers Medallion Award is given each year to honor outstanding
achievement in the publishing of Cowboy Poetry books. This is the best over-all competition we have had since the institution of the award. The winners represent a truly outstanding selection of Cowboy Poetry books. These authors and publishers are examples of the quality that make Cowboy Poetry so popular.
The winners are:

Gas Prices are going to keep going up and we the people have the power to stop the companies from rasing them any higher and make them bring them down. If everyone would BOYCOT the largest company that sets the prices they would come down.
ExxonMobil is the largest company and sets the prices for every other gas company to follow.
If Everyone would BOYCOT all ExxonMobil Stations for 3 to 5 days we would see the prices of gas come down. Let them know we are not going to be held hostage to high gas prices just because it's a holiday or summer.

100th Birthday of The Most Enduring Film Star of All-Time to Be Saluted by
Famed Contemporaries, Noted Film Festival and Home City of Newport Beach,
                                 California

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2007 annual Harris
Poll of America's favorite film stars finds Hollywood legend John Wayne at
number three -- an incredible feat considering his last film was released
in 1976. Wayne has never been out of the top ten since the poll began in
1994 and has placed in the top three slots eight times, proving that he
remains as popular and enduring as ever (In fact, on average, his films are
shown 3-4 times daily on national broadcast/cable outlets).
    (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070306/LATU037 )
May 26 marks the 100th anniversary of John Wayne's birth and in salute
to his life and impressive 50-year film career, the city of Newport Beach
(Wayne's longtime home town in Southern California) is commemorating "Ten
Decades of 'The Duke': The Official John Wayne Centennial Celebration"
(April 21 - 28). Produced in collaboration with the Wayne family and the
Newport Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau, the celebration will be a
featured part of the 2007 Newport Beach Film Festival (April 19 - 29) and
promises to be an unforgettable series of special moments recalling one of
the 20th century's most beloved personalities.
The weeklong event will launch with the first-ever presentation of the
newly established John Wayne Courage Award, created specifically to honor
noted individuals who have blazed their own trails in the field of motion
pictures and the arts. The presentation of the award will occur during an
opening night gala at The Island Hotel Newport Beach on Saturday, April 21.
The celebration will be highlighted by screenings of many of Wayne's
most memorable films. Each screening will be accompanied by rarely seen
footage, photos and personal appearances by notable co-stars, filmmakers
and contemporaries.
The roster of films include Wayne's Academy Award-winning performance
in the hit film "True Grit" (1969) plus the Howard Hawks film "Rio Bravo"
(1959), considered one of the true classics of the western film genre.
Other films to be showcased include "Stagecoach" (1939), "The Sands of Iwo
Jima" (1949), "The Quiet Man" (1952), "The Searchers" (1956), "The Man Who
Shot Liberty Valance" (1962) and "The Shootist" (1976) among others.
Other festivities include an art unveiling, original prop and costume
displays, a scholarly film symposium, etc. An elegantly casual fund raiser
in support of the John Wayne Cancer Foundation (http://www.jwcf.org) will close
the celebration on Saturday, April 28, at The Balboa Bay Club and Resort.
The evening, themed around the rousing Wayne film comedy "Donovan's Reef,"
will showcase Wayne's love of the movies, exotic film locales and good
"Though my dad's movie projects took him to many different locations
around the world, he always loved returning home to his family and friends
in Newport Beach," said Ethan Wayne, Wayne's youngest son and president of
Wayne Enterprises. "We are thrilled to be celebrating his 100th birthday in
connection with this year's Newport Beach Film Festival. It is a fitting
and appropriate venue to honor and remember his legacy."
In a remarkable career that spanned half-a-century, John Wayne appeared
in more than 175 films (including a record-breaking 142 leading roles),
garnering along the way the Best Actor Academy Award (1969), three Golden
Globe Awards, four People's Choice Awards and both the Congressional Gold
Medal (1979) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1980).
"There has never been a bigger internationally recognized movie icon
than John Wayne and the fact that he called Newport Beach home for nearly
two decades is a cherished part of our city's history," said Gary C.
Sherwin, president and CEO, Newport Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau.
"It's appropriate that Newport Beach be the host city for this
extraordinary celebration -- this is where John Wayne came to relax,
recharge, enjoy good times, and not play a role other than friend, husband,
and father."
Born in Winterset, Iowa, Wayne is considered among the "Top 100 Icons
of the Century" (Daily Variety, October 2005) and one of the "100 Greatest
Americans" of all time (Discovery Channel, April 2005). Add one more
distinction -- Wayne will enter cyber-space in March 2007 at
http://www.johnwayne.com (Wayne's first-ever official fan club and website).
In addition to the John Wayne centennial, the 2007 Newport Beach Film
Festival will highlight more than 350 films, offering an ambitious and
international selection of features, shorts, documentaries, and animation
that will compete for both jury and audience awards. Now in its 8th year
and set just a few blocks away from spectacular coastline (and less than an
hour from Hollywood) the festival will host several premieres, galas, and
yacht parties, attracting an estimated 35,000+ film lovers from across the
country and around the globe.
"We are truly proud to honor two things John Wayne loved: Cinematic
excellence and the community of Newport Beach," said Gregg Schwenk,
executive director, Newport Beach Film Festival. "The festival is excited
to host the many special screenings and events during the Centennial
Celebration. The 2007 Festival line-up will offer a unique view of classic
and contemporary filmmaking at its finest."
