What I Meant To Say
Zach
Buffalo ZEF Records
Parma-born singer-songwriter Zach is tireless. In the last decade, the Akron native has released nine albums and performed 200+ shows a year. He's played onstage with everyone from Dave Matthews and Neil Young to War and Chicago. And on his latest soulful effort, What I Meant To Say, he delivers his ten best and most organic-sounding tracks yet. He veers away from John Mayeresque territory and stretches out into a distinctive folk-rock/Americana take on pop music. Think Counting Crows with a Freedy Johnston-like sensitivity... and yet, he can get the funk out when he likes.
Zach recorded Say in Atlanta with producer Nick Chawala (Collective Soul, Gym Class Heroes) and the duo seem to have struck a creative chord together. "A Way Through" opens the festivities, with a rumination on Zach losing his father to terminal cancer. You find yourself thinking about the end of the line/ I find myself thinking about it more than I mind... he sings and you feel the disc (like his others) pull the direction of the disc into heartfelt existentialism. "Runaway," "Sky is Falling," "Some Love," "What Are You Afraid Of?" and the set-closer "World on Fire" are among the highlights here -- though "Apple Pie" could (and should) be this summer's funky-crunchy anthem of looking forward and staying real. Let's face it, you're fed up with what's on the radio in your car anyway. Zach's got a lot to offer; you'll definitely enjoy his craft.

Howdy!

May is typically one of my most favourite months of the year. Not only is it my birthday and the birthday of many of my friends, but it is also the first month where the weather is mostly decent, and the sun finally arrives. The grass and new leave shoots are a brilliant green, and even the rain isn't really minded.

This year was no exception. We had some cool full band shows (like the Rock Hall), and I got to tour to Louisville, and Philadelphia. Vegan cupcakes on my birthday was certainly a highlight! As was riding a bicycle again for the first time in over a decade. And performing at the Non-Comm-vention was fantastic! It was great to meet so many wonderful enthusiastic music lovers, and to make some great new friends!

Always listen to public radio. AAA/College/NPR. There is no need for any other stations. See you soon.

I think there were sun spots yesterday.

I had four phone conversations randomly and repeatedly dropped. And then Kinko's took 4 hours to print 25 copies. And it took me an hour to go 12 miles to Cleveland randomly in the middle of the day.

You'll have that.

I spent 2 hours late in the evening the night before last watching television, something I honestly have not done in ages. But I had been overly tired all day, and my body was trying to get me to rest (or threaten me with sickness, i think). So I turned on the tv as I suppoed my butternut squash soup. And I found a documentary about life in Yellowstone.

All of you know how much I love the greater Yellowstone eco-system. It is by far my favourite place on Earth. I'd like to be one of the retired folks that roams around the park and asks people about bear and wolf sightings. That would be a wonderful way to spend the so-called golden days.

The program was about a year in the life of most of the animals in the park. And it was filmed last year, i believe. In Yellowstone it can snow in ANY month. So it's like Cleveland in that regard :) Seriously though, there was a huge blizzard in June there last year. Plus, apperently the magma core of the volcano upon which Yellowstone sits doesnt move as the rest of the plate/land does, so there's this big 500 mile scar scrapped across the Rockies. This scar traps and funnels cold air up to Yellowstone, which is one reason it can snow at any time. And winters in Yellowstone can get up to 50 feet of snow, as opposed to the average of 10 feet in surrounding areas.

Also, antelope eveolved with their speed to outrun the extinct cheetahs that used to live in the area.

And Grizzleys can eat up to 20,000 calories of moths in a day. Yeah, that's a lot of moths! I'm glad we have things like chocolate peanut butter milkshakes so we can get all those calories in one sitting. No climbing to 12,000 feet and then having to dig thru rocks all day and fight off other bears.

Although we dont get to hibernate...

Needlesstosay it was a very interesting and beautiful special. Not much I didn't already know, but well done and well shot. (i wont bore you with other random facts).

And then, on came Monster Quest.

Monster Quest has been a subject of my blogs before. What a show. It searches out some sort of mysterious/ mythic creature. But it only spends about a day or two looking for it. And then in the end, they don't find it, nor do they get any kind of real evidence. So, after 30 mintues or an hour or however long it is, you realize that you've just lost that time. But this episode was about giant hogs in Texas. So all the folks involved were the kind of folks you'd picture living in Texas and talking about hogs. Or knowing anything about hogs. Or wrastling hogs. Complete with handlebar moustaches!

The highlight for me, though, was they decided to capture a normal hog, and harness a camera to its back, so that it could take it back to the herd and they'd see if there were any giant hogs there.

So they developed this camera and housing, and they caught a hog. They got the camera on it. And let the hog go. It dashed off into the underbursh, and they set off to follow it. It had some sort of tracking device on it and also sent the video feed to them. However, the video feed only lasted like 75 yards. And the tracking device was only good for like 100 yards. Pointless, right? So they got nothing out of the exercise. You would think someone at the meeting would have asked the question, "Umm, Cletus, what if it darn roons off an the rest o em is more an say hundert yards frum us?"

But that was never asked i guess. Or he was told to "Shut yer face, Jethro."

Hmm.

And all this brings me quite obviously to the book Jesus and Muhammad.

Good book. Written by a man who was raised in Islam, and rose to be a professer at the most prestigious Muslim college. But he was kidnapped and tortured on a suspicion that he might not be Muslim. So he was obviously disenchanted by a religion that could do this to people, and turned to Chistianity, where he is now a scholar. So, he has a unique and interesting perspective on both religions. This work is a compare/ contrast study of the two prophets, their personalities, what they preached, and how they preached it. There are several interesting similarities in the actual lives of both.

The most interesting thing thus far to me, is the contrast with Karen Armstrongs book on Muhammad. She is a brilliant religious writer and is able to put those complex ideas into a form very understandable and even touching.

Her book focuses more on the social constructs of the Arabic world and how Muhammad fit into it. She mentioned in good detail the raids he led and called for. However, she shows these to be more of a construct of the society, and nessecity and not out of holy war or as a conqueror. Whereas this other book, really focuses on the Holy war aspect, and paints a very militarist and violent view of the prophet.

Not that any of this is surprising. I have read several different accounts of Jesus and his attitudes and teachings. Just interesting. Again, no surprise in the violence and militarism - as it is in every religion save Buddhism.

It will be very interesting once I finish this book to start the next book on my list - the Dammapada (the sayings of the Buddha).

I see now the day is passing along and i have many things on my plate. So, i'll write again soon. I promise. It has been while!

Namaste.

Howdy!

After a very long and hard winter, I think we have finally reached the Spring! When life reawakens and stretches its wings and colours. When we can head outside again, and escape the prison of puffy coats and sweaters and actually feel the air again. It's about time!

April was a lot of things, the biggest being the release of What I Meant to Say, my 9th release, and the best thing I've ever done musically. The songs are more personal than ever, and I feel we tapped a very real place in recording these songs. There is more life and energy on this plastic disc than ever before. I think it truly is what I meant to say. I hope you check it out. Yes, that would help me to eat and live, but more than that, I think it is something that can help people, something that the world at large could use hearing and knowing. Maybe I'm delusional. Maybe I'm naive. Maybe I'm right. You can decide.

See you soon.
