Deadbands just put up a nice retrospective sort of thing on Botch....check it:

"It is very rare for a band to have such an impact on rock music that they end up inventing a new sub-genre. Creativity and ingenuity are hard qualities to come by in an art that has been so historically defined by plagiarism. Tacoma, Washington's Botch single-handedly created and perfected the "mathcore" genre. The band seemed perfectly in synch with each other on their 2 LPs and countless EPs, but their 2002 breakup revealed that each member had the capability to develop their own unique sound, without drawing any direct comparison to Botch.

Botch formed in 1993, when guitarist Dave Knudson and drummer Tim Latona were still in high school. Early on, they spent most of their time attempting to play Helmet covers in their newly-discovered drop-D tuning. These two chose the name by simply opening a dictionary. Bassist Brian Cook and vocalist Dave Verellen soon joined the band, and they played their first show in Verellen's garage on Halloween of 1993. They released a demo tape in 1994 (of which all of the members are embarrassed), and eventually did a mini-tour of Canada, with Verellen's father as tour manager/chaperone.

The band finally got a break when they went on tour with Ink and Dagger and nineironspitfire in 1997. That same year, they played a show in Buffalo, NY with Snapcase for over 1,000 people, which was by far the biggest live exposure that they had recieved. Around this time, they were approached by Hydra Head CEO and ISIS vocalist, Aaron Turner, to contribute a cover of Black Sabbath's "The Wizard" for a 7" series. The band ended up sending him an entire album's worth of songs, and Turner decided to sign them to Hydra Head. They re-recorded these songs with Matt Bayles (ISIS, Mastodon) in Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard's studio in 1998. The resulting product was American Nervoso. While very rough around the edges, this album re-invented hardcore, neglecting the typical "chugga-chugga" riffs for mercurial guitar shredding, and completely abandoning the tough-guy mentality.

After the release of their first full-length, Botch toured relentlessly and released several split EPs with nineironspitfire, the Murder City Devils, Cave In, and Knut. However, it was not until 2000 that they truly perfected the "mathcore" sound, with the release of We Are The Romans. This album still stands as the pinnacle of the genre, and has been emulated by literally hundreds of bands today. Latona's odd time signatures are matched perfectly by Knudson's unprecedented guitar riffs, while Verellen's vicious bark continually increases the ferocity of their songs. This album was beloved in the underground hardcore/metal scene, but went mostly unnoticed in the big picture..." read the rest of the article here.

And if after reading this article you're feeling a need to replace that American Nervoso Reissue, the one you lent your ratty ex-girlfriend and never saw again, visit the Hydra Head shop.

EDIT: the shirt mentioned has been delayed. Awaiting word on when to expect it in the HH webshop. there will be a posting when it becomes available.

Since there was not a preorder for this release, Hydrahead will have a Botch shirt to purchase alone in their webstore any day now, just a heads up so you can wait if you'd like to purchase that as well and save having to pay shipping twice.

Unless you've been living under a rock that's underneath another even bigger rock in a cave in the middle of nowhere, you probably already know what's up with this milestone/motherfucker of an album. Initially released in the year two grand, Botch's final full-length was/is the kind of devastating metallic hardcore explosion that the term "metallic hardcore" could/can only aspire to. In fact, these dudes nailed it so hard that the bands that came afterward had to start calling themselves "metalcore" out of respect. And today, it's actually even worse: Ever since Botch went tits up back in 2002, there's been a steady, obnoxious stream of MTV2-jocking carpetbaggers that have ripped off our Sea-Tac boys (currently members of esteemed rock outfits like Minus The Bear, These Arms Are Snakes and Roy) riff for riff. We'd name names, but why fuck around with pretenders to the throne when you're already in bed with the kings?

Re-released here in a totally sweet double-disc edition featuring the original recording plus bonus live tracks and the entire album in its hi-fidelity demo version, We Are The Romans is bigger, better, and more Roman than ever. So man the goddamn ramparts already, 'cause it's time to burn this motherfucker down.

CD 1 Track Listing:
1. To Our Friends In the Great White North (5:11)
2. Mondrian Was A Liar (2:41)
3. Transitions From Persona To Object (6:04)

Order from www.hydraheadshop.com

Recorded in March 1998 at Stone Gossard's Studio Litho in Seattle, American
Nervoso was Botch's full-length debut and first release on Hydra Head. The
white-hot guitar action, scathing vocals, sweet bass moves, and torrential
drums within smashed the existing precepts of "hardcore" and redefined both
the word and the music for a generation of matinee kids and grizzled vets
alike. And let's not forget drummer Tim Latona's immortal piano coda at the
end of "Oma," a convention-defying slice of musicality that most hardcore
bands couldn't conceive of, much less actually pull off. Yeah, this is the
one that put Botch in the full-length game: American Nervoso was a regular
coming-out party for a whole new way of thinking (and rocking); a funeral
rite for mindless floor-punching and youth-crew Hitlerism. Here it is,
nearly a decade later-remixed, re-mastered and reissued with five bonus
tracks for your listening pleasure and that occasional trip down memory
lane. Thank god for worker bees, but thank Botch for American Nervoso.

After the reissue of Unifying Themes Redux (which featured a bevy of early,
rare, and unreleased material) comes the re-release of Botch's first
absolute milestone: American Nervoso. Rife with totally singular rhythms and
guitar work, it's the sort of musical leap forward that a soul expected from
the hardcore scene at the time. And if you were around when this platter
came out, you know your jaw hit the floor when you first popped it on. Hydra
Head is now reissuing the record with amazing sounds and a throng of bonus
tracks.

"American Nervoso" Tracklisting
1.Hutton's Great Heat Engine
2.John Woo
3.Dali's Praying Mantis
4.Dead for a Minute
5.Oma
6.Thank God For Worker Bees
7.Rejection Spoken Softly
8.Spitting Black
9.Hives
Bonus Tracks:
10.Stupid Me
11.Spitting Black (Extended Version)
12.Hutton's Great Heat Engine (Demo)
13.Rejection Spoken Softly (Demo)
14.John Woo (Demo)

Seattle, Washington: The Showbox. June 15, 2002. Botch's final live performance. Possibly the tightest, hottest, sweetest show ever. All your favorite jams (fourteen in all); all those unstoppable riffs, all that blood, sweat and fear. See it for the first time all over again, under the white-hot blaze of the worklights, complete with pant-pissing bonus commentary and an audio CD of the complete performance. Plus a video for "St. Matthew Returns to the Womb." Plus a bunch of other cool shit that you'll have to discover for yourself.
