Dear all, Tonight, as part of our community outreach work with One Life Rescue, Julia and I will be visiting 80 young people at a youth club in Cambridgeshire. We will be talking to the younger generation about animal welfare, animal rescue and responsible dog ownership, and including the topic of overpopulation of dogs and the effects of overbreeding in general. We will also discuss how unlicensed breeding has affected popular breeds such as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in the United Kingdom. We hope to give young people an understanding of the danger of using dogs as a form of protection on the streets, which is regarded by current news media as anti-social behaviour with dogs, i.e. 'weapon dog' or 'status dog' culture. All young people present at the talk will be given the chance to share their views on this subject and we will be handing out leaflets promoting responsible ownership of companion animals and offer advice on how we can all raise our standards of pet care generally. Each member of the youth club will receive a free CD of The Staffie Song to take home with them. After the talk our VIP awareness dog Patch will be happy to meet and greet youth club members and Patch is looking forward to lots of hugs and cuddles! Best wishes Maria & Julia

http://www.idablog.org/idaafrica/dorothys-photo/It is with rapt fascination that a photograph of a deceased chimpanzee being visibly mourned by dozens of chimpanzees looking on as the body is being wheeled for burial has transfixed viewers across the Internet, on television, and in countless publications, with its soul-piercing sadness. The image of the matriarch Dorothy, lying still amid orphaned chimpanzees at ..Sanaga-Yong.. ..Chimpanzee.. ..Rescue.. ..Center.., in ..Cameroon.., ..Africa.., is something wondrous to behold. The ....Sanaga-Yong.. ..Center...., which provides sanctuary for nearly 70 orphans, victims of the illegal bushmeat trade, is a project of IDA Africa, the creation of In Defense of Animals’ Dr. Sheri Speede. who first traveled to the country to volunteer her veterinary skills. She made friends with three chimpanzees, Becky, Jacky, and Pepe—who had suffered decades in small cages at a resort hotel and, in 1999, became the first adult chimpanzees who had been rescued in Cameroon. In 2000, IDA Africa organized a forced confiscation of adult chimpanzees Dorothy and Nama, and eight monkeys, the first armed confiscation of illegally held primates in ....Cameroon.....The striking image by Sanaga-Yong volunteer Monica Szczupider that first appeared in the November, 2009, issue of National Geographic captures exquisitely the personal and ideal sharing of the fate among nonhumans brought together by a common purpose and who form extraordinary bonds of friendship. The photo subsequently appeared on “Inside edition,” “ABC News,” the New York Post, London Telegraph, the Daily Mail, and a variety of other newspapers and Web sites around the world. The writer Susan Sontag in On photography wrote that “photographs do not explain; they acknowledge.” When looking at the photo, one immediately feels the magnitude and closeness of the family of chimpanzees and seeing their view of things. In all the marvel of their chimpanzee nature and sophisticated minds, our closest genetic kin possess their own dialects, cultures, they teach their young, use tools, and are self-aware, conscious of themselves and their futures. And as evident in the photo, they feel sorrow and mourn the deaths of loved ones.Orphaned by a hunter who killed her mother, Dorothy was sold as a “mascot” to an amusement park-hotel, where she was chained by her neck. Somewhere between 25 and 40 dark years, she endured the endless mocking and jeering of visitors to the park, as she was taught to drink beer and beg for cigarettes to the great delight of onlookers. People laughed mercilessly at Dorothy, but no one came near enough to touch her. She was labeled vicious by the hotel staff. Once at the sanctuary, she made fast friends with many of the chimpanzees, even experiencing mother love by adopting a baby orphan named Bouboule, whom she adored until the end of her life. Dorothy and Nama, another amusement part refugee and soul mate, lived in alpha male Jacky’s group of 27 chimpanzees. Dorothy was at the center of it all—a beloved mother figure to many of the younger chimpanzees—a luminous presence everyone at Sanaga-Yong felt like a nimbus. When Dorothy passed away, on September 22, 2008, from what appeared to be heart failure, Dr. Speede said “many people from the villages, including the high chief of our seven villages, came to pay their respects. No one seemed to wonder for a second whether a funeral service was appropriate for a chimpanzee. They walked to the camp from their villages after learning of Dorothy’s death, without being invited.“We buried Dorothy beside the enclosure where she lived and beside the tomb of her friend Becky. All the chimpanzees in her family came to watch and mourn with us. When we brought her to the gravesite, they asked to see her again, so I took her body close for them to see her a final time. None of them left until the burial was finished.”

Minister asked to rethink position on BSL by BVA President:
................................................................................ Bruce, a family pet kept on ‘canine death row’ has been held since seized from his family in September 2007 for looking the wrong shape and size as outlawed under breed specific legislation in Northern Ireland. Now top vet Professor Bill Reilly has spoken out against the legislation and urged a rethink on the Government’s position. For Bruce a staggering two years has passed whilst his legal case is ongoing even though he has never put a paw wrong in his life and he’s not alone in this legal nightmare where life hangs in the balance and Bruce and others are confined to a concrete cell and cruelly denied the family homes they once knew. This surely cannot be the actions of a civilized society when in fact it is irresponsible and uneducated breeders and owners who are the problem, not breeds or ‘types’ of dogs? The annual BVA North of Ireland Dinner held at the Parliament Buildings in Stomont, Northern Ireland took place on the 29th October 2009, addressing the Dinner was the recently newly appointed President of the BVA; Professor Bill Reilly. Speaking before guests including the ....Northern Ireland.... Minister for Agriculture & Rural Development, Michelle Gildernew MP MLA, Jim Nicholson MEP and several other politicians as well as veterinary professionals, Bill Reilly covered several “core topics” including that of breed specific legislation (BSL). A copy of the full speech can be found on the BVA web site, in relation to BSL, Professor Reilly said: “Dogs are also hitting the headlines through the recent announcement of new control measures. I was shocked to read that one third of all dogs destroyed in the ..UK.. are in ....Northern Ireland.... – clearly the dual problems of dangerous and stray dogs are an enormous drain on your resources. We welcome your commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership, but we are disappointed with the proposal to retain breed-specific legislation. The manner in which a dog behaves is both a result of its inherited characteristics and, more importantly, the rearing and training provided by its owner. We know that aggression is a normal behaviour and can be shown by any dog of any breed, type or mixed breeding. Breed-specific legislation therefore engenders a false and dangerous perception that breeds not banned will not show aggression. I would urge the Minister to rethink her position on this issue and shift the focus of control to ‘deed not breed’, alongside a concerted campaign to promote responsible pet ownership.“ Minister Michelle Gildernew has given a written response to the BVA President’s speech at the BVA Dinner and in relation to the comments on BSL has stated: “I note your comments on my proposals for dog control legislation and in particular on the issue of breed specific legislation. Subject to Executive approval, I plan to begin consultation in November on my proposals. I will ensure that the BVA receives a copy of the consultation document and I would clearly value the Association's input on my full proposals at that stage.” It is heartening to hear that the leader of the BVA has spoken out against breed specific legislation and has urged the Minister to rethink her position on this issue. Breed bans do simply not work and are costing millions of pounds to implement whilst failing dismally to protect the public whilst innocent adult dogs and puppies are being held in kennels at huge public expense awaiting court hearings to determine their fate with a tape measure or being automatically put to death and all based solely on their appearance. Please support the President of the BVA and write to Minister Gildernew and urge her to repeal breed specific legislation in ....Northern Ireland.... and to spare the life of Bruce and other family pets currently caught up in this unjust and unworkable legal nightmare: - Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (DARD):

Brenda giving Reiki therapy to our Madi to help with her arthritis Dear all, Please help Brenda to get a large audience for her talk with the fabulous Sue Marchant, BBC Radio Cambridge, at 7.20pm GMT tonight, you can listen live online & also email the show to give your support if you have time :) Brenda gives a huge amount of time to helping rescue dogs at a local shelter and at Remus Horse Sanctuary in Essex. At the local rescue shelter Brenda helps to get the dogs into good homes and also gives free Reiki treatments to those that need it most. Since Reiki therapy was introduced at Remus Sanctuary their vet bills have dropped by a third so you can see how this would really help other shelters if more Reiki therapists would give their time in this way. Best wishes & bye for now, Maria xx THANK YOU, PLEASE SHARE!! :)

Dear all,
Please read up on the links below and remember if dogs with 'bull' in any part of their breed spec could be banned from the UK you can depend whatever breed irresponsible 'owners' choose to abuse next (and this could be any breed that becomes fashionable for all the wrong reasons or simply any dog made to be aggressive or used as a fighting tool) then your dog or your favourite breed of dog could be next. Don't allow the ignorant and dangerously uneducated Kit Malthouse and his supporters to push this extreme idea any further, in the UK right now we truly have a fight on our hands to save innocent dogs from 'gently being phased out' which simply means, putting them all to sleep, in other words, 'death to ALL bull breeds' and those that resemble them. This witch hunt has gone too far and it can only be ended by the common sense of the common people.
Please write a comment on the editorial pages and have your say before it's too late.
Thank you Maria

Dear all,
Please read and share the following appeal to bring two small abused pups from Turkey to the UK where they have a good home waiting for them.
Thank you Maria xx
MESSAGE FROM AVRIL -
I am asking everyone I know to help with quarantine costs to bring these two sweet babies out of Turkey and into UK.
http://www.facebook.com/avril.simms1#/group.php?gid=139489879565&ref=mfThey were found in Turkey during my recent stay there, the black pup had been burnt with cigarettes, both had fleas and worms, I had the pups treated at the vets and also had their shots for parvovirus and distemper.
I had hoped to have found them homes, but sadly this did not happen, on my return last Sunday I had no choice but to leave them at the local municipality shelter. This was one of the hardest things for me to do in a long time.
After returning home I missed them so much and hated the thought that they may never have a loving home, I decided to find out about bringing them here, which as it turns out isn't as difficult as I first thought, my only problem is the quarantine fees, which will amount to £3,286.42.
Please if you can help .. any donation, no matter how small will go a long way.
