07.04.09 It's safe to say that summer is in full swing now! All the tomatoes, squash, okra, basil, collards, etc. are growing like, uhh, err..weeds...and I'm happy to report that everybody, including the rabbits, are doing well. I've been encouraged by our son, Christian, to visit a local food "joint" in every city we find ourselves in. The criteria is simple: It has to be unique to the town/area, well-established (the older, the better), and it really helps if it's greasy and extremely unhealthy. I will start adding that info into the SHOUT! Newsletters for your perusal and then eventually, we'll add a links page to the website. Good, clean, greasy fun!!! OK, let's start by recapping where we've been since we last spoke: -------------------- SHOUT! Live The new live album is doing great, thanks to everyone's excitement over live music! Don't forget that this is grassroots and the best way for it to grow is for you to tell someone about our music TODAY! If you haven't picked it up yet, head over to the store page of the site and pick it up! http://www.mikefarrismusic.net/store.php-------------------- Record Store Day We visited Criminal Records in ATL and had a blast playing! On a side note, I recently found a killer Motown vinyl box set for our kid and he went bizzzerk! Sounds great too!! -------------------- Wasington DC Had a great time in DC. Had a great time celebrating easter weekend at Calvary Baptist Church. Ate at the legendary Ben's Chili Bowl ( www.benschilibowl.com) !! -------------------- Augusta, GA The whole band traveled down to play the beautiful Imperial Theater. The Carolina Chocolate Drops opened! What a great time we had!!! Thanks to Kevin Grogan, Nicole and everyone there for being so kind! -------------------- Greensboro, GA 2 nights acoustic. I had an amazing time playing for a great crowd! Our bus driver, "Gooch," and I played golf the entire weekend. Thanks to Rick Gould and everyone there in Greensboro!! -------------------- Mt. Pleasant/Charleston, SC As always, it was a great time!! Played at Windjammers on the beach, as well as a semi-private show at Awendaw Green. Awesome time. On the way back, stopped and ate the famous Beacon Drive-In in Spartanburg, SC. ( www.beacondriveinn.com)!! Thanks Dan and Eddie! -------------------- Vitoria, Madrid, Barcelona, Spain Whewwww!!! What a time we had! It had been 4 or 5 years since I had last walked on Spanish ground and it was even better than I remember. We played in front of a PACKED house at the Azkena Rock Festival, then the same thing with Barcelona, and Madrid. In between shows, we toured San Sebastian, Borgus, Barcelona, and Vitoria. Spain is an amazingly beautiful country, and the people even more so. There's lots of footage on Youtube! Thanks to Eneko for the killer hospitality!! Check unde my favorties on my YouTube channel www.YouTube.com/mikefarrismusic
-------------------- Strawberry Music Festival What an incredible family-friendly (kids everywhere!) festival in Yosemite National Park! We had a blast! This time we stayed in connecting condos overlooking the park. Took the girls to the local market where they picked up some fresh local fare, then we went back to the condos where they cooked a fantastic meal for the entire band!!! Good times!! Thanks to Charlie, Theresa and everyone involved for showing us a great time again...the Strawberry way!! -------------------- Bonnaroo 2009 (June 14) Bonnaroo was an incredible time again this year! What a privilage it was to play one of the main stages this year!! The night before, Julie, Christian, and I stood ONSTAGE (!!!!) to watch David Byrne play!! We also got to stand onstage while Al Green showed everybody how a real performer puts on a show!! Our bus was parked close enough to the main stage to catch all the big artists from our bus all weekend long. Wayyy too many acts to give reviews here, but again, an incredible time had by all! Thank you to everyone at Bonnaroo for inviting us back!! -------------------- Telluride!!!!!!!!!! (June 21) Telluride for summer solstice AND Father's Day!! This was one of the most prized events in my career. Been on the wish list for quite some time. Absolutely one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and some of the most wonderful people attending. Bus broke down just before we got into the mountains, which is better than breaking down on one of the passes, trust me....Thank you to everyone at Telluride!!! -------------------- Lawrence, KS Everyone in Kansas smiles! We had a fantastic time in Lawrence! Stayed at a GREAT hotel (can't remember the name right now) in a beautiful historic part of town. AWESOME time!! -------------------- Sony Connect Set coming to iTunes on 7.14.09!!!! Back by popular demand!!! Mike performs acoustic live at Westlake Studio B in LA (recorded May 2007) right before SIL came out. This will be for sale on iTunes with the title "Live From Westlake Studio B," but was originally sold as a "Sony Connect Set" via the now-defunct Sony Connect store. Tracklisting: Devil Don't Sleep 4:17 Know Good, Know How 3:54 The Lonely Road 4:24 Selah! Selah! 3:10 Change Is Gonna Come 3:23 -------------------- NEW T-SHIRTS ARE HERE! Our brand spanking new t-shirts are here and now available online or at any of our live shows. Thanks to Logoz Inc. for all their help! -------------------- Trivia IT'S BAAAACK!!! At Bonnaroo this year, they held a special Lebowski Fest celebration in the Cinema Tent. So here's the latest trivia question: In the movie The Big Lebowski who plays “Jesus” and how many Coen Brothers films has this actor made an apperarnce in? Winner will receive his or her choice of brand-spanking-new Mike Farris and the Roseland Rhythm Revue t-shirts. Good Luck!! That just about covers it for now. As always, I am hoping these words find you all happy and well! We're having busy summer season and we are looking forward to seeing as many of your smiling faces as we can!! In spirit, Mike

Greenhorn ranch- outside of the town of Quincy, California. That's where we stayed this past weekend while we played the High Sierra Music Festival. The Greenhorn was great, and the festival was even better! There's festivals all across the country that people don't even know about that have this rich, local, not-too-big, family vibe that is simply amazing. I'm guessing they had 10-15 thousand people there, and from what I gathered, that's mostly people who go back every year. It's tradition, and they know that High Sierra is going to deliver great music. It's great the way these festivals develop there own personalities too! High Sierra is akin to Mardi Gras, with everybody dressing up in costumes. They have parades through the campgrounds! Awesome stuff! On the other hand, Strawberry Music Festival is very kid/family oriented, a bit more mellow with the occasional edge. The campgrounds and sites themselves are amazing. Two distinctly different festivals with one well woven common thread: family. Everybody knows everybody even if they don't. The crowds for both shows were incredible at High Sierra! The band was on and we had a blast! 3 cheers for grassroots festivals!!! I'm also thinking ahead to our Texas run coming up. We are working on getting over to Cactus Records in Houston and Waterloo in Austin. I think we are going to plan some sort of special thing to go around the Antone's show, because it will be the first time we've headlined the storied club. I think when I was with Double Trouble we played there twice, and then we did SXSW there, but that don't count. It's gonna be a big time in Austin that night, I'm tellin' ya now! We're gonna pull out all the stops in the spirit of Clifford Antone and all that he loved! I'll let ya know what special deals that show might bring. stay tuned. That's it for now. I got two red tomatoes on the ole "Topsy Turvee" (yes, she brought one home..she's ALWAYS on the hook for gadgetry...but this one grows tomatoes, so no complaints outta me..) this week. I'm going to combine those with some fresh basil from the garden and add some awesome olive oil and some vinegar and eat till I can't stand it anymore! Happy summer everybody! in spirit- Mike

It's cloudy here.....inside and out. Everything's fuzzy and muted and I'm now on my 14th cup of coffee. First thing I wanna do is explain what happened to that well thought out, wonderfully planned...beautifully ornate window peering into the inner workings of Bonnaroo......remember, the one that I said I would do my best to provide????? Well, it was doomed before I even got there because I forgot to bring my Macbook. So, I owe you all a really big sugary sweet apology. I'm not sure I would have gotten online anyways, as we didn't have satellite on our bus (the one right next to us did but that's how satellite works). I'm sincerely sorry for letting you all down. It wasn't any fun anyways...... except for running into Bruce Springsteen backstage and seeing him surrounded by about 15 kids that looked like smaller exact clone versions of the big Bruce. The look on everybody's face backstage after Bruce's set while watching the HUGE Tennessee state trooper escort take Bruce, little clone Bruces, and the E Street Band back to the cloud they all live on for the night- that was fun. Finding out that the Kennedy's were in a bus near us...that was kinda cool. Seeing David Byrne from the side of the stage and having his neatly dressed dancers warm up inches from us (ok, that was kinda goofy...the frantic warm-up routine). Seeing the SteelDrivers KILL with a great set! If you haven't heard of these guys, then do yourself a favor and do just that. Waking up and going right out to see the legendary Allen Toussaint- not a bad way to wake up, so I guess that part wasn't so bad.....Running into my old friend and legendary photographer Danny Clinch backstage and catching up. Danny has shot EVERYONE in the business, but he started out shooting the Wheelies and Gov't Mule. Now he's one of the most respected photogs in the world. Seeing Del McCoury and what seemed like his entire band hanging/riding on a little teenie golf cart backstage. That was cool and funny. Hanging out in the artist compound was...ok, I guess.....there was the ever present ice cream truck where we picked up lots of free ice cream. And then there was the Converse tent where we all picked out some cool new Chucks! They gave EVERYBODY in the band new shoes, They even gave out Chucks to all the kids!!! WE LOVE CHUCKS!!! Being camped out just near enough to view the main stage and being able to check bands without ever even leaving the comforts of our bus was fantas....err...uhhh..ok, I guess. Being onstage while Al Green showed EVERYBODY how legends do it and why he IS a legend. I have to say that because I was busy doing interviews and such, I didn't get to see a lot of the acts that I really wanted to see, but I still had a fantastic time! The biggest part of the weekend, of course, was our performances. We were told that our time slot was notoriously the toughest slot of the entire festival and that was exactly why they put us there. The crowd seemed a little worn and weary, but by the time we got mid way through our set everyone had warmed right up. This was a show to remember!! I went back to the bus for a nappy poo, then back on the feet to do more interviews and then off to the Sonic Stage for an acoustic set. I never found the auction tent where they had our drum head featured. I had commissioned David Swanagin to paint us a replica of our Salvation In Lights drum head just for Bonnaroo. Hope they raised a lot of money with it!! My mind is starting to draw blanks now. The sensory overload has taken full affect. It's just as well because I now have to go fix a leaking yard hydrant (or have someone else fix it- that's more like it). Back to the real world, indeed! The Bonnaroo world sure is a beautiful place though. Out of 80,000 people we only encountered 2 ass*%#@s. That's the way real life is. Nice people always outnumber mean people. Kudos to Superfly Productions and AC Entertainment for providing the world with an amazing musical experience. Except for all these incredible memories I guess it wasn't all that great, afterall......

Hear that low end rumble...like a giant military vehicle approaching in the distance? That's the sound of the eighty thousand people migrating to a single 700 acre plot of land just south of here. For months now we've been gearing up for this show, and we're still getting logistics in place and we are but one band playing so I can't imagine coordinating ALL the bands. This year we're playing one of the two main stages. This will surely be the largest crowd I've played to since the Cheetah Wheelie days, but this could very well end up being the biggest crowd I have ever played for! YES, we are all excited! YES, we've rehearsed and chiseled and honed and tweaked! YES, local shows are always a pain in the a*@! YES, I HAVE now heard from every single human being I've come into contact with in my entire life asking me for passes! ....and NO! I can not please all the people all the time!! If we can contact a satellite on the bus I plan on doing a video blog from the site. We'll be down for the entire weekend, and will update you guys on goings on! We'll also send photos and I'll do some blogging. I will plan and sacrifice and sweat and toil with my little bitty mind and work really hard on creating that little hole in the wall so that everyone here can peer inside the inner workings and general atmosphere of the Bonnaroo experience!!!! See ya soon!! Mike

Sundays are the same everywhere, I suppose. I'm looking out my window at the view across the city and country side. There's no less than 4 ancient catholic church steeples piercing the spanish sky. We just got back from walking the streets of Vitoria. All is quiet. Shops are closed. church bells are ringing throughout this ancient city. The few people out are sitting quietly outside the cafe's enjoying cafe' con leche. There was a time in my life when these types of mornings weren't weren't plaintive and fresh with life but stale and sad. These were my only memories of this city and country until now. I like things better nowadays.......Yesterday was full of excitement and energy, what with the festival and afternoon show we did in the beautiful Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. Playing in such a place is like something out of a dream. I talk a lot of how important it is to me for music to be framed properly. The Plaza de la Virgen Blanca framed the music like no other place I've ever played. It was magical and yet the day had just begun!!! Afterward, we ran back over to the hotel for a MUCH needed nap. Then it was back on our feet and over to the storied Azkena Rock Festival!! We got there early for some interviews and such so we had time to hang out. I ran into my old friend Damon Johnson and spent some time catching up. He's over here playing guitar for Alice Cooper now. We chose to hire horn guys here to cut down on costs and I don't mind telling you I was just a tad bit nervous.................I am happy to report that Alberto, Joe, and Roberto were absolutely amazing and blew us all away, all the pun intended!! We played to a packed and energetic crowd!! The Basque people are so loving and willing to listen and sing along. I think everyone in the band was blown away. Speaking of the band, Nick, Joe, Eric, Keio, along with Ann and Regina, were ON!!!! Everyone stepped up and played their butts completely OFF. There are no more butts left in the Roseland Rhythm Revue!!!! If they were pigs their value would now be greatly reduced! Everything about the show was absolutely perfect for me! So much energy spent and now I am tired. The band, by now, is back stateside. Meanwhile, Julie, Tyler, and Donzit and myself are preparing to take off for San Sebastian tomorrow for a bit of a break, then it's off to Madrid, then back to Barcelona for two acoustic shows. I can't wait to play again, but for now all I can think about is SLEEP!! More news to come...... In spirit- Mike

Welcome to Spain! One of the most storied countries in the history of the world. Coming to you (barely) live in Barcelona- Catalon country. Tyler, Donzit (Tyler's wife, for you newcomers), Julie and I landed in Madrid at 10:00am and it took us only 9 hours to get to Barcelona, via train, subway, and somewhere between 5 and 50,000 verticle steps connecting us to each said train/subway train....travel note: avoid rail travel when carrying 5 times the luggage of the average immigrant seen in Penn Station....you know the ones I'm talkin' bout....they're in everyone's way, they're covered in sweat but dressed in the best clothes they own, extremely uncomfortable shoes, look like they've been up for DAYS with no sleep, all communications have ceased between the group members....yeah, you know the ones I'm talkin' bout....well, after years and yyyyyyyears of wishing that THAT could be me- that I could FINALLY experience the excitement of international travel like so many lucky persons who choose to travel in that fashion, despite the fact that they may even be able to afford NOT to travel that way, MY DREAM FINALLY CAME TRUE!!!!!!! Some of my highlights included (in no particular order)- 1. Soiling my brand new sport coat that I wore- thinking that I might try my hand at getting an upgrade to first class from Newark to Madrid, and hey, if you're gonna seek first class it's good to look first class, right gang!! I looked fantastico as I carried my guitar, 2 suitcases and computer bag along with Julie's 2 carry-ons and her 62 pound (they weighed it back at the airport in Nashville- I remember being impressed with that number at the time) super cargo luggage up countless flights of stairs, through too small turnstiles, sometimes heaving them over while maintaining that dapper, international traveler flare. 2. The shoes- They held surprisingly well, as did my feet-very few scuffs and that slickness that comes with new shoes is now gone and I'm excited to try them out when we take that hike through the northern provinces of China later this year! 3. I lost only 1 wheel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Throughout the day, the luggage wheels held out great, despite the heat, friction and stress. 4. We only missed one connection- Or was it two, I lost count in the midst of so much fun! 5. One of the most exciting moments for me happened between one of our many many many many adventurous connecting subway trains. I remember I thought it might be fun to explore above ground for a change and maybe treat ourselves to some nice spanish country oxygen. As it turned out, we made the wrong turn and had gone over and above the wrong turnstiles so we turned to go back down to the comforts of subterranean life. As we descended the second stairwell, Julie's beloved 62 pounder somehow gave way from my grip, sideswiped the spanish lady who then helped me by yelling unintelligible profanities, but nonetheless helpful, along with me so as to warn everyone who had descended before us. We barely escaped disaster and it made us a stronger unit in the end. By sundown we finally made it to the great city of Barcelona. It was, indeed, a long day filled with adventure and excitement and fun. Heck, just as we spotted the hotel across the street, the rains came and gave us a quick soaking!! Before we left the final subway terminal we made sure to pre-purchase a 10-ride card each so that we could come back tomorrow and ride the subways some more, although this time without the fun challenge of having the luggage!!! That said, I can't imagine tomorrow being any better than our first day back in Spain! Regards to everyone back home!!!
