The Madlib/Strong Arm Steady collaboration album Stoney Jackson came together in a flurry of creative energy over recent months. Prompted by Madlib’s stalwart DJ J.Rocc, who supplied SAS with 14 new Madlib beats CD, this album’s conception and delivery bear resemblance to the trajectory took by 2003’s Jaylib with J Dilla and 2004’s Madvillain with DOOM.

The SAS had previously rapped over Madlib’s music on their mixtape/album Deep Hearted and on the Talib Kweli/Madlib album Liberation.

The Stoney Jackson album unfolds over sixteen tracks and is a brisk, exciting hip hop record. Krondon and Phil The Agony supply the majority of the vocals with the third SAS member Mitchy Slick; guest appearances include Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson, Little Brother’s Phonte, Planet Asia and a host of underground Los Angeles’s emerging rap talent.

Stoney Jackson represents Madlib’s return to the hip-hop fold and sets the scene for the OJ Simpson collaboration he’s finishing with Guilty Simpson.

Dam-Funk Toeachizown Vol. 3: Life

Toeachizown Vol. 3: Life

$5.99, Album, 37 min., 320 kbps

Toeachizown will be released as a 5LP set in Fall 2009, with CD to follow.

This particular part of my debut; Toeachizown is Vol. 3 & it's called Life because these songs focus on relationships; good ones & weird ones (if U will). These songs also include vocals on all the tracks. The one I'm most proud of in this juncture of the album is “I Wanna Thank U (4 Steppin' Into My Life)” as it's dedicated 2 someone very special 2 me who came into my life at the right time and without judgement. It's a full song. Hook, verses, bridge and ready for radio play. I just wanted 2 show that I can actually create a full song (if and when I choose 2), and not only way out there beats & such.

All the songs on Life I hope connect with my friends who dig my take and contribution to this strain of Funk, which I consider Melodic-Funk, influenced by such great artist that came before me like: Loose Ends, KASHIF, MTUME, and some of Steve Arrington's (of SLAVE) more mellower solo joints. I also enjoyed creating “Could I Be Loosing Another Lover?”. This one's dedictated 2 all who may be able 2 relate 2 this type of situation. Bottom line, I just thank U 4 listening. Stay tuned for Vol. 4: Hood. Peace fam. – D-F

Peanut Butter Wolf: Straight to Tape for 999
Peanut Butter Wolf's Straight To Tape: 1990-1992 CD will be available on the 999 tour. Read More:
Straight to Tape: 1990-1992 | PBW's 999

Not so sure about anything with these songs except for the fact that I made them while living with my mom in the early 90’s and almost all were recorded with the rappers rapping through headphones plugged straight into the DJ mixer. My original idea with this comp was to put stuff I did throughout the 90’s in honor of the 999 shows I’m doing, but I just discovered SO MANY songs from this 3-year period that I made that the focus. I didn’t use compression on anyone’s voice nor did I know what that was back then. That’s why the vocals are all over the place. Most songs didn’t have effects on the voices either. A lot of adding loops on top of other loops live, which made it sloppy.

At this point in my “rap music career”, my goal was to make a “Marley Mahl In Control Of Things” type comp with all the rappers in San Jose I was meeting at the time. My situation was a lot different than Marley’s though, mainly because he established a crew of rappers that all worked together (before Wutang) and most of the rappers I worked with never even met each other.

The fact that I put out a record with Lyrical Prophecy (Quiz One and Deshee) in 1989, made it easy for me to find MCs to record in San Jose. I was known as the “kid with the record out”, even though it didn’t really sell. I was also the only kid with a sampler besides King Shameek, but Shameek moved to New York. None of these “songs” were really finished and definitely none were polished. They were all rough draft versions with the intention of going into a proper studio to re-record. The only rappers I really finished songs with and took to the studio back then were Quiz One and Charizma, but none of those songs are on here.

I think at that time, if I made a beat that a rapper liked and he had lyrics, I’d record him over it to hear what it sounded like. Some of the beats were chosen by more than one group or artist, and I’d try different guys over the same track. My idea to do this comp back in 1990 quickly got scrapped as I found myself working with Charizma more than anyone else and decided that he was the one I worked best with. We both had that slightly warped sense of humor. Plus, we both liked the Whirlwind pinball machine, so that sealed the deal.

Stones Throw Podcast 50: Lootpack's “Pieces of Soundpieces” mixtape, 1999

It's the 10th anniversary of Lootpack's classic hip-hop album Soundpieces: Da Antidote, the record that launched Madlib, Wildchild and DJ Romes along with their crew Quasimoto, MED, Dudley Perkins, and Oh No. Our 50th podcast is a mixtape tape put together by Madlib as the album was about to drop in early 1999 - back when a mixtape really meant “tape.”

Side one is tracks from earlier Lootpack singles, side two is tracks from Soundpieces, but throughout the mix are various other Madlib beats - some unreleased, and some that would later get worked into tracks like Madvillain's “Rainbows.”

Side A - Pieces of Sound
Ill Psyche Move
Female Request Line
Tupperware Puppets
Lost Art
Styles, Crews, Flows, Beats
Discipline 99

Side B - Pieces of Soundpieces
Verbal Experiments
Crate Diggin
Likwit Fusion
Weededed
Long Awaited
Speaker Smashin'
Whenimondamic

Soundpieces was Lootpack's only album. The following year Madlib released his debut solo record, Quasimoto's The Unseen (Stones Throw - 2000), and Wildchild went solo with Secondary Protocol in 2001, proclaiming “Lootpack ain't broke up, ya'll.” We're still waiting for the next one. Madlib's father Otis Jackson Sr., would later release an album of their 1994 to '1997-era demos, The Lost Tapes.
