For supporters of mine who don't know:

Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave) and I have made a new group and recorded an album together.

The group is called Street Sweeper Social Club.

That's the name of the album, too.

I wrote all the lyrics and did the vocals.

He did all of the music.

The songs are funk/rock anthems for the revolution.

The album comes out on June 16th.

I need everyone who is going to buy the album to buy it that first day or pre-order it now, this will increase possibilities for the album to get out there.

I need all the folks who have promoted my work in the past and supported us- to amazing lengths at times- to help promote this album. We only have about 4 weeks.

If you want to hear 4 of the tracks, go to http://www.myspace.com/streetsweepersocialclub

To join our "Street Team" go to http://www.streetsweepersocialclub.com

After you hear the songs and decide that you're down, I need you to post blogs, bulletins, and twitter about it.

Our single, "100 Little Curses" is the #8 song (#4 requested) on KROQ in LA. It's on a few other stations, too. So, if you're a radio listener call and request it on whatever your station is.

If you join the Street Team, there'll be other ways you can help.

We are on tour now with Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction.

Check http://www.myspace.com/streetsweepersocialclub for correct dates.

Also, I'm on twitter. http://www.twitter.com/bootsriley

No, I'm not afraid of technology. I'm afraid of how the role of technology in this system is to keep us isolated and pacified while making us more efficient for those who wish to exploit us. But you can say the same of education under this system. I will still use both for a different agenda.

There is not much that feels better than rocking out to great music .... unless it all happens to also be for a great cause.  Such was the case last Saturday night at L.A.'s Troubadour at the benefit show for The Danny Fund (www.Dannyfund.org .. ), the organization set up by friends and family of Danny Federici, longtime keyboardist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.  He passed away almost exactly a year ago from melanoma, and this group is doing all they can to fight that disease, through sharing preventative information and by raising funds for research and a cure.  Once again, it was moving to see how things can get accomplished when fine people come together for a good cause ... and everyone has a great time while they're at it.

The show opened with a short but lovely set by Alexa George.  It was great to see a female presence open the heavily-male line-up for the night.  She sounds like a sweeter Ani DiFranco, a bit.  Really, a very pretty voice, and the crowd loved her.

All of the acts for the night would go well together on a tour, and I suppose it's no mistake that every one of them has spent a considerable time at The Hotel Cafe.  Great friendships and collaborations have been borne out of that space, and the bigger stage at the Troubadour was clearly put to good use - often by everyone at once.  Brian Wright (and the Waco Tragedies) played next, rocking both the rock and country side of things with "Adeline" and "Downtown Eloise".  They riled up the crowd, who were more than ready for it.  Rumors were swirling about The Boss making an appearance (he was in town days before, no show scheduled this night .... come on!), so the audience had an energy about it like ANYTHING could happen.

Robert Schimmel was the Comedian/MC of the evening, and as a cancer survivor, he seemed like a wise choice.  Or else Hugh Jackman was busy.  He tried to keep the audience entertained while bands would switch places, but aside from a chemo-Merkin story that mildly amused, the focus was on the music.

Chris Joyner played a bluesy 3-song set, and reminded me of a much much cooler Randy Newman.  Especially on his last tune, "Heavies".  He plays around everywhere with so many people that it's really nice to see him take a seat at the keys and do his own stuff.

The Low Stars hit the stage next, fronted by Chris Seefried and Dave Gibbs (also of the headlining Freedom Fighter Orchestra), and joined by many.  Their harmonies are so gorgeous, they take you back to 70's Laurel Canyon, when music was live and voices were good on their own.  The highlights of their set were, "Sweet Love", a STUNNING cover of U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name" with Gemma Hayes and J-Fed (Danny Federici's son, Jason) on accordian, and a sing-along (in A) of their lovely tune, "Justified".  The talent level of the musicians in the house this night was ridiculous.

Which was evident again with the throw-down by our hosts for the evening, Jason Heath & The Greedy Souls, who, with their bandmate, Jason Federici, helped to organize the entire evening in honor of his father.  With the deck of the show stacked with all of their very best friends on the bill, these guys were having a GREAT time playing together, you could just tell from the grins on their faces as one jam led to the next.  They began with my personal favorite, "Anarchist Girl", and followed that with "#1 With A Bullet" and "California Wine", all of which were skin-tight.  Jason S. said, "Danny gave us great music, but he also gave us a great guy, and one of my best friends (Jason F.) and for that I thank him most".  So they did thank him, musically, through the pretty "Ghost In My Home", the rock jammer, "The Devil Ain't Talkin'" and the rowdy "Truth Rag".  I'm sure Danny would have said "Thank You" back, as this musical tribute, led by his own son, was super touching even if you had no familial ties.  Plus it straight-up rocked.

Mike Peters of The Alarm and Slim Jim Phantom of The Stray Cats teamed up next to play a song called "Love, Hope, Strength", which is also the name of the organization that Mike started as a two-time cancer survivor himself (www.lovehopestrength.org .. )!  He was obviously (and said so) thrilled to be there, and he and Slim Jim did exactly as their next tune demanded and "Rock(ed) This Town", Stray Cat style.  It was fun, and had the room dancing along.  That was a pretty big feat considering this wound up being a 5+ hour show!

Joe Purdy and his band played what felt like a normal length show set, featuring long jams on pretty much every one.  Normally, this would be beyond excellent, but people were fading fast.  Like The Greedy Souls, Joe Purdy's band is super tight, and filled with EXCELLENT musicians.  Each song takes you on a lyrical trip to muddy river banks, or whiskey bars, or wistfully into your own daydreams .... sometimes all at once!  My favorites were "Your Dress Is Too Long" and "White Picket Fence".  Every song was great, but it started to feel a little indulgent when the jam part of (each of) them went on for a long, long time.  I get how fun it must be to get in that zone with your best friends on the planet, but for a tired audience, it gets really long post-midnight on a work-night.  I'm not complaining at all, but some fellows near me sure were.  But you know what, it was Joe's birthday (cake brought out mid-song) on a great night of playing with his friends, so screw 'em.  Happy Birthday, Joe!

Robert Schimmel came out and asked "How'd you like the first half of the show?".  He was kidding.  It did kind of feel like a new half of the show though, when next Tom Morello took the stage.  People were instantly re-fired up and yelling for their Guitar Hero.  He immediately addressed the rumors and said, "Dave Grohl (? - Didn't hear that one) is not coming, Bruce is not coming, so if you have kids to tuck in and need to get going ...".  I think some were disappointed at the Boss no-show, but they were amply made up to by the blistering show Tom and his comrades put on.  Aptly for a Danny Federici Fund Benefit, Tom first played his "Alone Without You" from the "Sicko" movie soundtrack, and then his "St. Isabelle" that he wrote for his Aunt that also passed away recently.  Both were fitting and touching tributes that hit on the pulse of the night.

By now the entire place had been standing, drinking and getting louder as the evening progressed.  This made the eerie silence during Tom's "Garden Of Gethsemene" even more impressive - especially when he stepped away from the mic and sang with no amplification at all.  Total silence!  It was crazy.  After "Maximum Firepower", Tom then brought out "The Nightwatchman's E Street Band", The Freedom Fighter Orchestra (Carl Restivo on rhythm guitar, Eric Gardner on drums and Dave Gibbs on bass).  This commenced the "Heavy Metal Thunder" portion of the night, and not a moment too soon.

"The Lights Are On In Spidertown" featured an absolutely crazy flamenco style acoustic solo from Tom that made even himself stand back, dumbfounded, at its end.  That was just the beginning though, as during the dedicated to Danny "The Ghost Of Tom Joad" (which Tom again joined Bruce on last week at the Boss's concert - YouTube it), Tom played such a solo, I thought he may have actually been possessed.  His teeth even took over the strings at one point, never missing a beat.  The crowd was now fully wide awake again, and very appreciative.

People had been yelling "Boots!!!" for a while, and they got what they wanted when Tom brought up Boots Riley, the other half of his new band, The Street Sweeper Social Club (previously simply Street Sweeper, but that name was taken already, I guess).  They - in a word - RULE.  The first of their "Anthems for the Revolution" was "Fight! Smash! Win!", then the extra-infectious "100 Little Curses", both of which tore the place up.  They finished their turn with a cover of MIA's "Paper Airplanes" that made you almost forget the original.   The place went bonkers, and rightly so.

Jason Federici came out to thank everyone and remind us all to "Keep going.  Keep making great music. ... My Dad died smiling."  Joe Purdy had been with the family at Danny's bedside during his last days, and he, Jason and the rest of the Greedy Souls played the song that was played at Danny's funeral, "A Fighter's Lullaby" (download free at www.dannyfund.org/downloads .. ).  It was a perfect way to end the night, but even better was the Grand Finale All-Star Jam!

The entire line-up of All Stars came together to rock out Danny's favorite E Street song, "4th Of July Asbury Park (Sandy)", and that had the whole room singing along together.  The ultimate finale song was "No Surrender", again, perfectly fitting.  Verses were shared, Tom shredded another solo, and as the chords died out, the lyrics and sentiments remained:

Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
you say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath peaceful skies in my lover's bed
with a wide open country in my eyes
and these romantic dreams in my head.

No Surrender.  And as I woke up the next day, the sun bright and breaking heat records, and the songs still fresh in my head, I put on a ton of sunscreen (thanks for the reminder, Danny Fund Folks!) and went outside, blessed to face the wide open country another day, romantic dreams stuck firmly in my head.

TOM MORELLO AND BOOTS RILEY JOIN FORCES TO FORM
STREET SWEEPER SOCIAL CLUB
SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM TO BE RELEASED JUNE 16th THROUGH WARNER MUSIC GROUP’S INDEPENDENT LABEL GROUP

DEBUT TOUR CONFIRMED WITH NINE INCH NAILS AND JANE’S ADDICTION

April 22nd, 2009 -- New York, New York -- Tom Morello and Boots Riley have joined forces to form Street Sweeper Social Club. The group’s anticipated self-titled debut album will be released June 16th through Warner Music Group’s Independent Label Group. The 11-song set was produced by Tom Morello and features Boots Riley on vocals, Morello on guitar and bass, and Stanton Moore (Galactic) on drums.

“It’s revolutionary party jams,” said Morello of Street Sweeper Social Club. “It’s got huge steamroller riffs combined with depth, charge, funk, while Boots unloads clip after clip of incendiary rhymes rich with satire and venom.” Riley added, “This is a time when the working class is being fleeced left and right. More families will be homeless and more people will be jobless. They’ll need something to listen to on their ipods while storming Wall Street.”

Street Sweeper Social Club’s debut tour will be opening all dates in North America on the Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction May-June Tour (confirmed dates below). The tour will find Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction sharing a stage for the first time since the debut of the Lollapalooza festival in 1991 (as well as the first tour by the original lineup of Jane’s Addiction in seventeen years).

Tom Morello is a founding member and guitarist of the rock bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. The two bands are responsible for multiple Grammy Awards and a combined 30 million albums sold worldwide. Morello has also received critical acclaim as a solo artist known as The Nightwatchman. Widely celebrated for his unique voice as a master electric guitarist, he is recognized by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Guitar Players of All-Time (#26).” He is also one of only two guitarists featured as a playable animated character in the overwhelmingly popular Activision video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Tom Morello graduated from Harvard University with honors as a Political Science major and has been a widely recognized political activist throughout his career. With System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, Morello formed Axis of Justice, an organization whose purpose is to bring together musicians, music fans, and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice.

Boots Riley is best known as the leader of The Coup, the seminal Hip-Hop group from Oakland, CA. As a producer and lyricist, Riley has crafted critically acclaimed albums for The Coup that have graced the year-end Top 10 lists of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and more. They have also received “Album of the Year” honors fromThe Washington Post, Time Out New York, while Billboard Magazine declared the group “the best hip-hop act of the past decade.” Born in Chicago and raised in East Oakland’s Funktown neighborhood, Boots became a teenage community organizer. From his history of student organizing in Oakland’s public schools, serving on the central committee for the Progressive Labor Party, being the President of Youth InCar (Youth International Committee Against Racism), organizing to build California’s Anti-Racist Farm Workers’ Union, to developing “guerrilla hip hop concerts” (mobile concerts on flatbed trucks), Boots Riley has been an integral part of the progressive struggle for radical change through culture.
